thanks for your replies! am crap at uploading photos, takes me days - but I think you have cracked it MW, must be a pomander (strange it has no pattern on it and only one tiny hole!)

I used to have a pomander that sounds a bit like that. Filled it with pot pourri.

My lovely friend gave me a present, I am seeing her tomorrow but I don't know exactly what she has given me!
It's ceramic/china, white, fits in the palm of my hand, looks like an oversize doorknob, has a large hole in the bottom to fill with something and a plastic plug to keep the contents in, and a very tiny hole near the top.
Is it for pot pourri, a diffuser of some kind??????
