1980s kids' toy

Can anyone remember a toy where you had a rectangular frame (I think) and a variety of different sized wheels with little grooves. you could put a pen into various holes on the little wheels and move it around inside the frame making lovely patterns.

i think it began with "s" but not sure.

am scratching my head at something to buy for 5 year old girl and think i loved this when i was 5 and thought i might try and get it.

Many a happy day spent payng with mine. I actually spent three full days doing all the wheels in the different holes and holders and labelled them

Spirograph definitely. Very fiddly for a 5 year old though, no? I got one from a car boot when I was in year 5 and quickly got fed up with it because it was too hard to keep the pen inside the cog thing without it all flipping up before I'd finished the pattern.

have looked at amazon and the sreach for pirograph brings up this which looks fine for a 5 year old (say for 4+ and she'll be 6 in March so should be fine)

I loved my Spirograph, it had pins IIRC to keep the circles still. I haven't seen any lately but I wouldn't imagine they would be as good.

Yes but the pins were never strong enough :( The newer ones look good, where the big circle is fixed.

My ds is five and has one. He loves it and doesn't find it fiddley at all.

the elc one is rubbish, look on ebay at the old ones, they are great

I had a spiro tot, I think it was called that was a simpler and much easier to use version of a spirograph. That had a fold down frame.
