I'm slowly building a nice collecting of christmas books over the years, we have obviously, the night before christmas, the original christmas story 'the nativity'. Santas elf etc.

This year I've stumbled accross and want to recomend;

Santas reindeer by Rod Green illustratted by Jon Lucas and Carol Wright with Clayton McDermot.

Blurb
"Sssh

have you ever heard a reindeers sleigh bells in the sky on christmas eve? Have you ever heard a reindeers hoofbeat on the roof of your house? Or listened to the clatter of antlers outside in the darkness?

Of course you haven't!

Santas reindeer are so skillful that they can fly in and out of your neighbourhood without anyone hearing a thing, but how do they learn to fly? What are the reindeer really like? What do the reindeer do the rest of the year when they aren't flying santa all around the world?

Find out all about how santa and his sleigh master train the sleigh team at the northpole, discover just what reindeer games the team likes to play and what they love to eat. Learn everything you'll ever need to know in this beautifully illustrated look at the north poles most magical inhabitants.

Then watch out on christmas eve.

Once you know all about santas reindeer, you might just be able to spot them stopping somewhere near your house!"

It has truly beautiful pictures and lovely stories and reindeer facts. And all about 'reindeer training school' it really brings the magic alive, dd is a touch young but loves the pictures, she's 2.11, ds is more enthrawled by it at 4.3.

Also,

The Christmas Bear 'a christmas pop up book' by Ian Whybrow and Axel Scheffler

Blurb
" When santa sets off to deliver the presents the poor christmas bear is left behind. How will bear make it to toms house in time for christmas morning? Pull the tabs and lift the flaps and help him on his very suprising journey!
Has lovely pull tabs and pop up characters but not in the traditional --fall to bits if a child looks at me-- way.

If anyones in east anglia/suffolk/edge of norfolk. Pm me and ill let you know the shop I found them in for £3 each, they rrp at £12.99 and £6.99

Little children will love this brand new luxury touchy-feely flap book bursting with Christmassy fun. Each double page shows a different festive scene, beginning in Santa's workshop on Christmas Eve before all the presents are loaded onto his sleigh ready to be opened up on Christmas morning. This book also features a fantastic 25-flap advent calendar each hiding a surprise festive picture. It features delicate and charming illustrations by Lesley Danson. It is an ideal Christmas gift for older babies.

Product Description
A charming board book featuring six traditional Christmas songs and a music CD. Each delightfully illustrated Christmas scene has been created from felt, lace, knitting, ribbons, buttons and sparkly foil and features the lyrics of Christmas carol favourites including Jingle Bells, Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. The accompanying CD contains not only the melodies for the songs in the book, but also ten additional tracks of Christmas music, such as The Holly and the Ivy and The First Noel. The perfect festive soother and an ideal gift for baby's first Christmas.

I have seen The Christmas Bear one, and we will be getting it for this year. DS has another in the series (The Bedtime Bear), and it is his current favourite. I had to read it four times the other night! :)

We've a collection too. Hurry, Santa, Hurry was my son's favourite for a long time, it was a pop up book from M&S.

He loves the Nativity book from there too.

We have an abridged box set of the classics such as A Christmas Carol.

We've brought home The Grinch from the US recently, and one year I got my ds The Polar Express special edition with cassette, read by Liam Neilson I think.

There is a Jolly Postman Christmas Special - new edition published 2 days ago. I had it on pre-order from Amazon but they cancelled it saying not available, but then I picked it up in Waterstones in town so very odd....

No probs, Jj (I like the new addition to your username, btw!). I have added this to my Basket too, but not read it yet, but it looks gorgeous: www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-Elfs-Christmas-Jane-Cowen-Fletcher/dp/0763632503/ref=lh_ni_t?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21.

We also have this: www.amazon.co.uk/First-Christmas-mini-Jan-Pienkowski/dp/0141500972/ref=pd_sim_b_1?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 - so beautiful.

Binfull, would love a Grinch book, and The Polar Express.

Ok - I must, must, must go to bed so sorry to do a link and not type properly but I love the Wildsmith books mentioned here, they are SOOOOOO beautiful. I like just looking at them:
imaginatemum.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/beautiful-christmas-books-far-too-early/

I also think Angel Mae by Shirley Hughes is lovely (though it makes me cry...) and Lucy and Tom's Christmas also by Shirley Hughes - but I think it is out of print, I got mine from Abebooks.

We have too many Christmas books, I love them! Might actually have to do a cull this year but you lot are not helping! (and I should be in bed - aaagh - bad influences on Mumsnet - keep my fingers away from Amazon...).

A few years ago our DS was bought a book called 'The night before the night before Christmas' which he really loves - it has now become tradition to read this book on Dec. 23rd and then we always read 'Twas the night before Christmas' on Christmas Eve.

I am useless at links..but would heartily recommend Little Owl and the Star by Mary Murphy, THE most wonderful picture book for 2-5 year olds. We read it all year (and am on DC3 with it now!)

For older children, 7 to 107, there is a wonderful sillhouette Nativity book by Jan Pienkowski called The First Christmas with the most stunningly detailed illustrations, which will go on to become a classic in many families, I'm sure...the link is in NoHuns message above
