9 month old ..all of a sudden screams and tantrums and fits when put to lieing down for nappy changing
main problem is he kicks me in breasts on change mat - BIG time
almost smacked him yesterday - that is how bad it is and hubby today said he almost couldn't cope/restrain him too
don't know where this has come from out of the blue
is this normal for a 9 month old??
sometimes toys help but rarely
any tips or advice?
why doesn't he want dirty nappy esp poo to be removed???
dont want to not change his nappy but now it is almost getting to the point (not reached it yet as am pretty disciplined with it) of oh well only a wee lets wait till real poo comes along...
my dd was the exactly the same at that age age so I did the wet ones with her standing up against the sofa and the others over my knee (that way you have more control over thier legs) and she was much happier and it didnt bother her any more.
I have had a similar problem with DS- he's now one and a little bit better. The only thing that works is ringing the phone and giving it to him as a special nappy changing treat- I pretend it's a phone call for him. Sad I know.
Hi Bumbly, My DD 12 months started doing the same thing a couple of months ago now too. Still is but can handle a bit better now. I have been told that it is perfectly normal. Apparently they are just expressing themselves and practicing protesting (pushing their boundaries). Doesn't make it any easier to deal with I know. I always have a handful of useful objects that grabs her attention whilst changing her and sing fairly loudly (the end of the world by REM does the trick) very apt I thought!! It can drag you down I know but knowing it's just a phase and trying to see the lighter side of it will help. We have also put a mobile about the changing table to grab her attention too. x
Prepare everything, handfulls of wipes out of packet before you start!! Give baby packet of wipes to play with, often keeps dd occupied although she still squirms
Bag for dirty stuff open and prepared
Clean nappy ready
Lie on back, remove nappy fastenings.grasp both legs with left hand near ankles.Wipe bottom with right.Fold over old nappy as you go along to prevent poo splatting everywhere.
Failing this,as they only usually poo once/twice daily(well mine did) run small bath.Remove pooey nappy dunk child in bath and clean that way.
When weightbearing it is often easier if they are standing up and standing against something, with a toy to occupy them
DS 17 months has been doing this for months. His new trick is to run around the room with me chasing him. (What fun!) Once he's pinned down he screams and cries hysterically then pushes his feet against my stomach to manoeuvre himself away from me. I move closer to him and he does it again and again. As we move further and further across the room, he laughs like a hyena (spelling?) flips over and bolts off again! I'm feckin' exhausted! Bring on potty training
My dd (10 months) is driving me MAD with this!!! Arrrgggh!!!
Having tried ...
A 'special' toy Phone Remote control Music Distraction In front of telly Over the knee
and failed miserably, i have now resorted to easy up pants. This does make wet nappies a little easier but makes no difference with dirty nappies i'm afraid
Had a lovely streak of poo to get out of the carpet earlier
Bumbly, sorry,I think we are at cross purposes, somewhere. My first post I was genuinely trying to help. The second where i put PMSL was not aimed at your predicament but at the poster,Toothaches' suggestion of 4 stakes to tie baby down to stop them zooming off,I wish I could do this with dd.She is 2.5 but has learning disabilities and still needs her nappy changing like you would a 9month old as she doesn't stand on her own,but boy does she wriggle and it is difficult not to end up covered in pooSo I do sympathise
Forgot to add, when it's a nappy of the number two variety (never just a wet one), DS always makes an attempt to grab and fling before I can get it into the nappy sack. He has lightning quick reactions where dirty nappies are concerned and seems to find both number 2's and bottom burps highly amusing! Typical man .
Sorry didn't mean to worry you. Chances are it'll settle down fairly soon. I've asked friends and DS rather extreme nappy changing antics do seem to be unsual and prolonged. Their DC phased out of this after a couple of months. DS is very strong willed in other ways so putting it down to his personality! Can't wait for those teenage years .
I used to give ds something he wasnt allowed to have - like dh's phone , the nail clippers anything he cant usually have. He is being closely supervised (but obv dont give him the steak knives!) so it doesnt matter, but it made life so much easier. Now (15 mo) I tempt him over with a toy, grab him, whip his nappy off and clean him, and by then he has usually broken free and is running away laughing and trying to pee on the floor. So maybe dont take advice from me
Hiya Bumbly- We have exactly the same kind of baby!! All the threads I keep bumping into you on! Just wanted to let you know that mine's the same. Always disliked nappy changes and getting dressed but now he is able to wriggle away and sit up from laying down, he just screams til he sits himself up of wriggles away! No fun, no advice but you're not alone.
my ds is just like this! 12 months most of the time he poos pre-bath, or on an evening when dh is around for pinnning dutiees OTOH he has had diarrhoea for about the last 6 weeks so that has been fun We have 2 changing mats which we alternate - one in the bath getting miltoned and showered down, other in use. have tried giving him a toy /forbidden item but he seems to find it amusing to smear it in the contents of his nappy. Usually end up just fighting with him. Would love to think it will be over in 2 months (although from reading this thread I do think it has got better)
Oh god, we have just started this with DD (10mo). She complains whenever I lay her down and even if I have her ankles she flips right over. I'm usually chasing a (very cute) bum with the nappy
It's quite funny sometimes as she is v cute, but after 4 or 5 changes it starts to become a drag. We can no longer change her on the chest of drawers like we used to.
We give her a toothbrush which she loves and sometimes keeps her happy. I've started doing it over my knees too.
lol bumper, that's another good ruse....give them something they normally covet but aren't allowed, like the TV remote or your mobile phone...or big brother's transformers
knee changing.....you just lift the bum clear by holding the ankles and use the wet, but not soiled front bit of the nappy to wipe most of the poo off. I've never had poo on me, even when DD had a very bad tummy bug.
