gp prescribed this for ds when he was nearly three for recurrent nightmares(about zombies) it had the opposite affect on him and made him hyper. it does work for some kids ,it just a case of trial and error
Yes, the nightmare thing has been mentioned to me my another mum I knw. I dont know what else to do though - we will try anything. Just not sure what alternatives there are.
Blimey yes I've been there - sympathies. White noise was the best thing here - hair dryer paricularly (which got taped to the cold position and left on under the cot...) He's 8 now and still wants a fan on when dropping off to sleep for the noise.
DD2 was prescibed it as an antihistamine when her eczema was particularly horrendous. She was about a year old. It's not supposed to be prescribed to children under two but the GP said a reduced dose would be OK.
We gave it for a while and went back for a review. GP asked how she was getting on and were we happy with the 1ml dose? Now there must have been some error at the pharmacy as the bottle said 1x5ml spoonful at night, which is what we had been giving!
It did stop the itching but even with 5 times the recommended dose, it never made her sleep. She woke every couple of hours til she was about 2.5.
Just turned 3 in April. He has been quite poorly over winter, and just seems to have got into the habit of night waking and shouting for me. Tried everyting other then meds - with no effect!
I use it for travel sickness and it works for my dc.
I've also used it twice as a last resort to get ds to sleep. It worked the first time but not the second irrc. But I think you are meant to do it for a few nights in a row for it to have an effect.
I was prescribed phenergan tablets for my sickness, and it made me sleepy all the time, BUT it was awful coming off them. I reduced the dose gradually, but spent 3 whole nights wide awake, trembling, and almost hallucinating, black spots etc.. Not saying this would happen to your ds, but i wouldn't use them again
In small doses it may be ok. My 3 yr old has only just kicked 6 months of terrible sleep . I used it for 2 nights, the first night she woke but she slept through the second but it didn't reset her body clock. However i think in terms of giving you an opportunity to catch up on some sleep, it might be worth considering for just that alone.
I have (luckily) an absolutely fab HV. In her opinion the only thing that works is the rapid return. It did work for us but over 6-8 weeks rather than a few days that supernanny suggests . The HV advised me to do it only when I was ready and once you start, keep going. Her sleep is much better now (if you discount the 5.15 waking) and if she does wake, she'll go back to sleep in a matter of minutes.
Had it prescribed for my LO when the room was spinning (back end of an ear infection) it worked for us - just broke the cycle and he was then OK. Good luck
Made ds1 hyper. Also, back in those days it had orange colouring in it and he was allergic to it.
He was a dreadful sleeper - it didn't help.
The only thing that helped was training him to self-settle.
Massage is brilliant for children who are bad sleepers. I did it with dd and she never had a problem sleeping. i wish i had known about it with ds1 because he was a nightmare.
I was actually prescribed this as a child because apparently I never slept (thought this was an exageration until ds2 came along) and AFAIK I had no problems with it. I am about to use on ds2 shortly. (not as twisted revenge, but for travel sickness )
