I generally do one wash one day and two the next, there is me dh and dd, who is in reusable nappies, so only 3 of us. Do you think this could be too many washes?

Sorry wrong topic blush

I'll try again in the house keeping topic.

I do at least 2 washes a day. 3 kids, none in nappies, but messy school uniforms.

Why are you worrying about whether you are doing too many washes? If the load is full, whats the problem?

I'm on an economy drive and just trying to cut down on things generally.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By TeenyTinyTorya on Tue 06-May-08 22:06:11
One usually, unless I've let it build up, in which case two. Me and dh and ds aged 1. With reusables, your amount of washes sounds quite reasonable.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PinkTulips on Tue 06-May-08 22:07:20
i ignore the clothes washing till the baskets are full then do about 4/5 washes in a day, this is every 3/4 days or so. i also have to do a nappy wash every second night. that's for me, dp, and 2 kids who need clean clothes daily.

as long as your not washing things for the sake of it (ie washing clean clothes like my mom does) then what's the problem?

I do 1 a day at most - there's 5 of us and 2 are bed wetters - so yes you could cut back, bu then I don't know about the nappies!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Smithagain on Wed 07-May-08 20:48:25
Probably about 5 loads a week (me, DH, two girls). Used to do more, but I've been cracking down on barely-worn clothes going into the wash. If it's not truly dirty, it gets worn again.

Have also recycled/chucked out/given away about 20% of everyone's clothes. Which seems to keep it more manageable. Am still not sure why that would be.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By HaventSleptForAYear on Wed 07-May-08 20:48:50
We also use re-usables and wash every day.

Every other day is nappies(well night - we again I have cheap rate electric at night and actually it's great washing over night now I'm into a routine of it - it's ready to hang out/up straight away next day before I go to work.)

Occasionally when we've had guests there is extra bedding to wash so on a nice day I have sometimes done 3 loads or if there are coats or sth like that.

2 adults, 2 DS in family. Most of the washing seems to be DS2 (15 mths) - he's self-feeding and messy with it.

DS1 wears the same clothes several days running (like his dad!)

Should say that I did three nappy loads a week when I was using washable nappies. So you don't sound too excessive to me.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By riven on Wed 07-May-08 20:50:42
probably 2 - 3 a week depending on whether its bed stuff week or not. There's 2 adults and 4 kids. 1 child drools and wets severeal t-shirts a day and wees her trousers. The ohers wear the same clothes all week.
School uniforms and PE kits are washed friday night.

We are DH, me, 2 year old (very messy, at least 2 changes of clothes a day), 4 year old.

Ds wet the bed pretty often too.

I do at least a load a day...2 if I get behind or DS wet the bed. At least 10 loads a week I'd say.

2 adults and 2 children. There is another adult (au-pair) but they do own washing and therefore don't count.

We do around 11-12 loads a week for the family. S'alot, no?

Two of those loads are bedding, one is lingerie, two are sports kits, then there's at least a load a day, either lights or darks.

Depends on the weather and season here, mid winter when it's wet then i do 3/4/5 loads a day - three of the dss' play rugby 5+ times /week, and when it's sodden wet and muddy then nothing for it but a wash - no way it can be reworn for the following day, also I ride and dh cycles, same applies there, wet and muddy clothes go in the washer.
However today I only did two loads, and yesterday (and one of those was a horse rug) it's dry, rugby has finished and athletics uses less clothing and it doesn't get as dirty.
Am total slob though and only wash towels when they smell, and bedding when i remember.

I did 3 today and got them all out, dry, and in again, first time this year, I am so happy (sad, but happy grin)

In the winter usually 1 a day, sometimes 2. 2 adults and 1 large teenager (sometimes 2).
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By ouryve on Wed 07-May-08 23:12:04
It varies, but usually totals about 12 a week - I have a washer dryer that seems to be on constantly. 2 adults and 2 perpetually dirty, stinky boys under 5.

Well I generally do one nappy wash a day as DD is a champion at weeing grin, but I do tend to put towels and the like in with them so that I have a full load. Then I do clothes every other day, but I do tend to wash things that have only been worn once and are not dirty. I will cut that out now. I do our bedding and the dogs bedding once a week.

I usually do only 1 a day - sometimes 2 and always have a "day off" from washing - generally rotating like this....

nappies
light wash
dark wash
none
nappies, bed stuff and towels (big wash day - 2/3 washes)
light wash
dark wash

...unless something unusual happens like poo exposion!

me (maternity leave) ds (4months) and hubby (works all day)

I expect it will change as ds gets older and I go back to work...

Agree with Riven.
we do about 4 a week, with dh and me, and 2 dds.
Stuff doesn't get washe dunless it is dirty/smelly.
Washing basket is rarely empty, but also never overflowing.

Are any of you on water meters? Does it cost a fortune?

We do approximately one a day, sometimes two on Fridays which is bedding day, sometimes miss a day. For two adults, two children, DS very messy, usually mud on school trousers. We were away at the weekend, so I did none Saturday or Sunday, then one on Monday when we got back, two on Tuesday, one yesterday, tonight will do towels, tomorrow bedding and some clothes if enough to justify. There is a tendency to try to keep up though when the weather is so lovely for drying.

Quattro you do a seperate lingerie load?! How many pairs of knickers do you wear a day?!

We are 2 adults, 2 dc under 2 both in washable nappies. I usually do 1 load a day although the nappies are sometimes an additional load. I am scummy with towels/bedding though and do towels one week bedding the next-they take up too much drying space otherwise, particularly in winter when I can't get anything dry! blush

I do 2 -3 loads a week - one friday and the other saturday so that i get chance to dry one lot before the other goes in. There are 3 of us and I have enough school uniform to last the week so suits us fine.

Added bonus that it helps use less water and power so a bit greener too.
