Has anyone got any good tips for keeping an 11 month old happy in the car?
We try to time journeys round his naps but the trip to my mum's house is typically about 2 hours and that means usually an hour awake and a lot of crying!
we've tried music - which keeps him happy for a bit - and the usual distractions (interesting things to play with etc) - which is a lot easier if one parent can be in the back playing with him, but not so easy if it's just me driving with him alone in the back... After about half an hour awake in his car seat he usually gets quite fed up and anything more than two hours is meltdown territory.
What works for you?

Box's of rasins and they take ages for them to fish out the box and eat!

When drinving on my own I switch the front air bag off and move their seat into the front which seems to help-legal but not sure if politicaly correct.

Also as he gets older it will get easier at distracting as they can talk and interact better with you.

no, he can't see out at all - his only view is of the back of the seat! so no wonder he gets fed up. but i'm not sure you can really make the chair higher as such. (it's a maxi cosi car seat.) it seems like a design fault that the babies can't see out at all, but maybe it's safer to have them lower..
like the raisins idea, thanks!
he's able to interact a tiny bit - we had a little game going yesterday where i made noises and he imitated them! and also the one word he understands is "clapping" - if i say it, he claps! - and that kept us going for a while and was very sweet. but yes, once he can talk, it will be easier...

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
