Any thoughts/advice? Is it the size that matters, or the bone or muscle development? Anyone know?

I had a big baby (60cm, 5.3k at birth) and now at a much larger 8 weeks he is getting folded up in his cocoon and really, really protesting it. He is also able to hold his head up for 3-4 minutes at a time when sitting on my knee.

Tomorrow I will lie him in the hanging baby bit on a small blanket or such like which might help. But I am seriously thinking about moving him into the doubles seat at the back. The instructions say 6 months before putting in lower doubles seat. Woman I bought the pram from did 3 months for her preemie baby. What about you?

He's too young still. It's a muscle thing and he needs to be able to sit reclined properly without sliding down on himself.

Have you tried taking out the cocoon and just lying him flat on the botoom bit on a blankiet? That would give him more space and air. I can see that the cocoon is far too hot in this weather but, like the PP said, they really need to be able to sit up. My DD2 went into it at just over 5 months but she could sit up unaided by then.

With both my babies, there was a horrid period when they got bored lying down but were too young to sit up and they jsut hated going in the pram. I tried to use the sling as often as poss. instead.

In this weather I wouldn't imagine he needs to be in the cocoon, just lie him back in the hanging bit.

I kept both of mine 'lying down' until about 5 months. They need to be able to support themselves properly before they go into the doubles kit.

When he's older, you could set it up with the doubles kit and put your older child in the lower seat at the back and your youngest one in the front seat on full recline. It's way too early for that now though and I agree - sling the cocoon!

oh lovely, the best kind of advice: unanimous and sensible. Many thanks!

I can still lie my 10kg 7mo in the flat bit without the cocoon - she still prefers it for sleeping. I lie her on a lambskin, which is lovely and soft with the zips done up and the clips undone so she's at a slight tilt rather than completely flat.
I first sat her upright at 5mo - she was sitting unaided by then. She doesn't like it much, though and I end up carrying her or using the sling.

Phlossie- I've been wondering how to make the flat bit of the pram slightly inclined. My ds is 5 mo and now only likes being in the cocoon if sleeping, otherwise he screams and he is still too small for pushchair bit. I agree with you about the sling as yet again this morning I ended up carrying him home and using my pram as a shopping trolley.

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
