DS was reading at 3 1/2, I never taught him, he taught himself, just by us reading with him and recognising sounds/letters. DD is 4 1/2 and is not interested. We have read just as much with her, but she seems to learn in a different way. Nursery are doing the Jolly Phonics sounds with her, so we are doing a bit of that at home with the songs and sounds, but she will learn when she is ready, I'm not stressing about it!
GS started to recognise letters at about 2, then place names at just under 3 (countless trips 'up country' by train got him reading the names on stations). I thought it was a fluke until he started pointing the places out on the TV weather maps, and telling other what the words said.
Numbers followed, then peoples names and finally his address - then he started school.
We didn't actually teach him, he just sort of picked it up.
DD is showing an interest now. She's stopping to ask me what signs say in the street, pointing at words in books and asking what they say and knows some of her letters. She's been able to recognise her own name for a few months. She's 2yrs 7 months. Going to answer her questions but not planning to push her (beyond introducing her to Peter and Jane first level books)
DS1 was interested in numbers and shop names etc at 2-ish, and knew a few sight words. He said he wanted me to teach him to read when he was 3-ish but soon lost interest, so I left it. He knew his letters when he started school at 4 and learned very quickly after that.
DS2 asked me to teach him at 2, but I didn't. At 3 and a bit he seemed very interested so I started teaching him Jolly Phonics - not very formally, just as and when. He got very keen when he was 3.5, so we did 10 minutes more or less every day after that, and he was reading pretty fluently (ie Y2 level) when he started school at 4.
I could read fluently at 2 and a half, my mum taught me. I was ahead for about 5 years and then everyone caught up. Made absolutely no difference although my mum thought I might be a geniuus for quite a while!!
