ARE VEGAN DIETS SAFE FOR CHILDREN?

Hello, my name is Steve Boggan, a feature writer contributing mainly to The Times and, occasionally, the Mail (I am also ex Independent and Guardian).

I am conducting research for an article on bringing up children on a vegan diet and am keen to speak to parents who have had good experiences, and parents who have had difficulty and stopped the diet, perhaps because of health concerns. A 12 year old child was recently admitted to hospital in Scotland with rickets and bone fractures thought to have been caused by her vegan diet. But in cases like this (we cannot discuss this specific case) are the problems caused by the diet or by it not being properly administered?

I would like to canvas the opinions, and write about the experiences, of people on both sides of the argument. I shall also be speaking to a wide range of health and diet professionals. Any resulting feature would run to about 2,500 words. If anyone feels they might be in a position to make a contribution to the debate (as soon as possible, please!), I can be contacted at steveboggan@hotmail.com or on 07968 357507. Many thanks and best wishes, Steve Boggan

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
