Research to put a smile on your face!

Dear all,

Hello from the University of Plymouth!

We recently carried out some research using this forum about self-help techniques to help improve body image. Well, our next research project extends this work further and we would really like your help.

We all feel down, low or depressed sometimes, but occasionally the balance slips and you may find yourself feeling more negative moods than you would like.

We want to see if simple mental exercises, such as questioning unhelpful thoughts, thinking about things you are grateful for or thinking about what you have done well, on a regular basis can improve your mood. Research has shown that these really simple mental exercises can be surprisingly effective.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to take part in a free self-help study for two weeks, to try the techniques. The study is completely web-based so provided you have an Internet connection, you can take part anywhere in the world at anytime!

To get involved visit:

www.psy.plymouth.ac.uk/onlineresearch/mood

If you would like more detailed information, or would like to know anything at all about our research contact adam.geraghty@plymouth.ac.uk

Our body image research produced very interesting findings with help from the members of this forum, so if you feel you could benefit, please take part.

Just giving this message a bump!

Lots of people are finishing the study and reporting very interesting effects...

We need lots more people to take part! If you haven't taken part yet and feel you might benefit from mood enhancing techniques, please do.

Here is the address:

Dear all,

We are having problems with our server, it will all be sorted by Tuesday morning. Just keep up with the workbook and you will be able to update the questions on Tuesday.

Apologies for this. It is frustrating because it is out of my hands, until the web people come back to work.

Bumping this because having spent only five minutes or so on my first 'homework', I wanted to say it is easy and actually nice to do.

(Glad you are much better Cod)

Am bumping for you Adam.

It took me about 10 mins possibly more like 15 but I did think quite carefully about some of my answers.

It was interesting to do, and actually a bit slightly sad for me (bits of it) <sniff> Makes me glad I'm doing this now though. smile

Dear All,

Yes there is a long questionnaire, we estimate that people take around 3 seconds a question, so it should take about 10 minutes, not that much more. The layout makes it appear longer (promise!).

Also, people in the past have found it quite interesting answering the questionnaires, gives you a chance to reflect as you think about your answers to various questions... part of the process.

Adam

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
For a wink, , type [wink]
For a shocked face, , type [shock]
For an angry face, , type [angry]
For an embarrassed face, , type [blush]
For a sad face, , type [sad] or :(
For an envious face, , type [envy]
For a sceptical face, , type [hmm]

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
