Recipe of the week

smithy's roasted beetroot: low-fat, dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free and generally nutritious and virtuous. This one-dish wonder is delicious and uses up some seasonal beets. What's not to like?

We are on day 16 of the current bout of cold/viral bug thing. We haven't had more than 2 hours sleep a night since. The girls are grotty, snotty with high temperatures that come and go throughout the day. Started off as a cold 3 weeks ago for both of them then dd2 got a chest infection for a week, still full of snot now and has a "wet" cough that is bad in the day and wakes her up every hour (ish) at night. Dd1 got over the cold after 10 days and now has an ear infection which leaves her very upset, with a runny nose and eye. Both on Amoxy (dd1 second dose this month) and are on calpol and ibuprofen.
I know I am naive but is this how it is? I realise this is compounded by a small age gap, when I have one on my lap crying the other one cries and hits me as though I have a favourite! They won't lie on the sofa together and let me look after them either. DD1 threw up in the hall today and as I ran to get a towel dd2 walked through it in bare feet. Not good, any tips on how to get through the days? (I accept the nights), I got my mum over today as they scream and pull at me when I try to leave the room. My dh did the cooking and household stuff this weekend as he is not the one they go to.

You must be exhausted. It does seem like they've had one bug after another. I hope it gets better soon and you get some sleep.

Oh Littleover you have my full sympathy sad

I am there with you. I have seen the 4 walls for what seems like weeks.

The youngest 2 dc have been ill for about 3 weeks. The baby (1) has had Norovirus and double ear infection, tonsilitis...

The other children have had another d&v bug last week. All off school here and there.

My highlight has been the school run.

Let them watch TV and try and rest where you can. Go to bed as early as you can too. Can dh do the first part of the nightshift?

Till 12 maybe? Put ear plugs in so you can't hear them. Things are much easier to cope with if you have had some sleep.

Mine have been content to sit in the buggy and be wrapped up (when not vomming or pooing) so you can get out for a bit.

It is depressing. It will pass.

You poor thing.

Thanks for your support ladies, just come downstairs as dd1 has woken up again. Dh is brilliant and we work as a tag team through the night as when one baby wakes so does the other and I can't be in 2 rooms at once. We used to do the competitive tiredness thing when we just had dd1 but it's beyond that now! We have a lot of laughs about it thank god, unlike him I don't have to wake up and sit through a day job as well.

If I was offered plastic surgery I wouldn't get a boob job or tummy tuck, I'd settle for another pair of hands!

Think of me in a hour...I'll be up again!!!

try a wet towel on their radiators, prop beds up, lemon and homey war drinks, vicks on chest backs, soles of feet with socks on top.

an assault of remedies.
