Why are boys names so hard to choose???

We did like Finn but then went off it after a while.

I secretly liked Wilfred but DH said NO!!!

Liked Jacob but not Jake so that was out.

We both seem to like Theo and can't find anything to dislike about it but still not sure.

I usually like using the proper name, ie Theodore so they can choose as they get older.

What do you think? Better asking here than in real life IMO

I think Theo is a lovely name

Theo best of the lot - so many Finns about and Theo is more of a classic - which is good imo for boy names. Theodore hard for a baby to carry off, but no harm in it being on the birth certificate - I always use my full name for formal occasions.

think both theo and theodore are lovely, might need the long version for when he is prime minister wink

I like it and I think that Theo has enough of a classic ring to it to not need the full Theodore as a formal name. It's not like Jim and James or Tom and Thomas to my mind.

I am not keen on Theodore either, but Theo sounds lovely, he sounds like a nice boy and would be a good grown man name too.

maybe we could just go for Theo , although there is the prime minister point! wink

Well that has made me a lot more confident about using it, thanks mumsnetters!

Theo is lovely. Theodore - not so keen and I don't think DS would be bothered about it either. Go with Theo.

I like Theo. wasn't there one in the cosby show? (showing my age here!)

I like Theo alot, we have a dd called Thea smile

If you aren't keen on Theodore then you can use Theo as a stand alone name, Theodore may well end up shortened to Teddy by some.

I liked Theodore shortened to Theo. We didn't choose it though as we already have a T and also thought some people might have thought we named him after Theo Walcott.

Lovely name though smile

Love all your name choices - I think Wilf is adorable for a little boy but may possibly be something he's embarrassed about as he gets older.
Theo is a great name - cute for a kid, sexy for a teenager and older man. I love Teddy as well.
Have always liked Finn. Jacob is ok but a bit dull.

I think Theodore on the birth certificate, to be known as Theo.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By tearinghairout on Sat 17-May-08 18:59:40
Good for you, I like Theo. I think you should put Theodore on the birth certificate 'cos Theo does sound like a shortened name to me.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By alfiesbabe on Sat 17-May-08 19:56:34
Yeap Theo is good. But yes, use the proper name, Theodore as his birth name, as Theo is an abbreviation.

Theo is a lovely, lovely name.

Wanted it for DS but DP didn't like.

jacob can be shortened to jack or jem or jackie.

theo nice name too tho. getting pretty popular round here but not top 10 or anything.

Theo is a lovely name, so is Theodore, as are Ted and Teddy, really I don't see how you can go wrong.
(Biased though since two of my old friends have little boys called Theo and they are both gorgeous & delightful children )
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Tommy on Sat 17-May-08 21:00:29
Theo Walcott not awful at all but he is a local boy and people might think we named him after him
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PrincessPeaHead on Sun 18-May-08 11:02:03
Theo Walcott's mum was my independent midwife for my last two babies (two home births). He is a lovely boy (well, he was a boy of 14 when I first knew him, he is 19 now!) from a lovely family and his mother is Numero Uno Superb and Unflappable Midwife, in my book. You could do worse than to name a baby after him...
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Nbg on Sun 18-May-08 11:06:29
Just a thought, if you like Wilfred but dh doesnt, what about Walter?
Can be shortened to Walt which I think is lovely.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Pen74 on Sun 18-May-08 22:26:08
It's ok, but very popular, I have heard it described as the new Josh. When Theo Walcott scores all the goals in the next world cup, they'll be even more little Theos running around. Wilfred (Wilf/Fred)is cool!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By sleepycat on Tue 20-May-08 21:08:42
Is it as popular as Josh? surely not?

Theo only came in at 73 or something in the national statistics site for 2007 so hopefully there hasn't been a massive surge during the first 5 months of 2008.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Pen74 on Tue 20-May-08 22:25:43
It may not be as popular as Josh now, but mark my words it will be! It has been the second fastest rising name over the last two years and will rise by at least 15-20 places for 2008. I predict that in six years time it will be in the top ten.

Bounty suggests that it has risen to number 57 so far this year, and their stats include Scotland, where Theo is not used very much.

If you don't like Theodore as the long form, you could always go for Theophilus.

I had 3 Theos's in one class last year. All naughty.

We know a Theo (aged 5). He is officially Theodore but always known as Theo. He is the only one in the school. Lovely boy too.

theophilus sounds like the bacteria they add to bio yoghurts!
