..isn't an ember the remains of a dying fire? I did not know it was a name.
Also people might confuse it with Amber?

I don't think of embers as dying ... rather warm glowing remnants.

I agree it might sound like Amber said with an Ozzy or South African accent ... simply because people are very familiar with the name Amber so they will try to make sense of what they hear and may not have heard Ember used as a name.

Thankyouandgoodnight what made you think of the name, what does it mean to you and where did you hear it? If you like it then you should use it.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Thankyouandgoodnight on Fri 16-May-08 09:08:06
We are after a 'soft' but solid name if that makes any sense and we both quite like names that are actually familiar words. I don't however like Amber so much and that's been my main concern with this as they are very similar. It was in one of our name books! Another name I like which we absolutely couldn't use is Swallow blush - for obvious reasons!

I thought that I would put it to the jury for instant and honest first reactions. I'm not so bothered about the 'dying embers' as to me embers are more 'strong and warming' things. It is similar to Amber and that's what loads of you have pointed out. Quite rightly too!

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Thankyouandgoodnight on Fri 16-May-08 10:05:22
You lot do get ants in your pants don't you??

Some of us don't like straightforward or names we've been listening to for years on end. It's not personal, it's just that as you don't seem to like to 'off piste' ones, we don't like the what we would refer to as 'dull' ones. I was kind of hoping that people would be able to see this suggestion (as with others in this topic) from the OPs point of view rather than their own and try and help me (and others) work through it.

e.g. it's fine to say that Ember is very similar to Amber / sounds a bit morbid because of dying embers etc - that's actually helpful believe it or not. But to suggest names like Kate or Emma or have a pop about whether or not we think our children are too special to have a 'proper name', is just daft. I think.

Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By seeker on Fri 16-May-08 10:19:55
Thing is, I think there is a happy medium here. Names don't have to be dull and boring OR completely off-piste. I agree that we probably don't need any more Emilys, Joshs, Callums or Ellies for a generation or two, but are Wireless, Carpet and Vladivostok the only alternatives?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PrincessPeaHead on Fri 16-May-08 10:22:58
If you like swallow, and have a willow, how about a Sorrel? Similar sort of sounding to Swallow without the unfortunate connotations, also a plant (herb), Willow and Sorrel sound like sisters, etc etc
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PestoMonster on Fri 16-May-08 10:28:56
I think Ember is how a South African would pronounce Amber. Not sure I really like it that much, think PrincessPeaHead's suggestion of Sorrel is nice and quite a clever alternative too. smile
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By WigWamBam on Fri 16-May-08 10:33:04
There are plenty of interesting and unusual names you could choose from - the choice isn't between a boring name which you hate and a comedy one which everyone else will laugh at.

Even when trying to see this from the OP's point of view, as you put it, all I can see is a name which makes it appear that you can't spell, and which has huge potential for causing bullying and embarrassment for a little girl.

And, you know, you did say "hit it" ... which really does invite people to be honest with you. If this is what people here think, it will be amplified in real life.

I absolutely do want honesty, which is why I've bothered posting on here but I also need some constructive help if this poor babe is ever to have a name!! I'm not offended by any of the responses in the least grin. I was just vaguely hoping for a spot of help on the matter if said name fell upon great mirth (which it has).

I love the name Seren but unfortunately my cousin got in there first with his little girl. DH doesn't like Sorrel but I agree - that's also a great name.

I also quite like Sol and LOVE the name Lyra (another DH reject).

We were also wondering whether another plant/tree name would be on the naff side as we're not after a theme. It just happens that we liked the name Willow irrespective of it being a tree.

Now, Carpet......there's a thought wink.

Amber is a lovely name (see my profile)grin

I asked the South African teacher at school how she'd say DD's name & she said Amber just like I would - but when I told her about this thread she was a bit shocked as she realised that when she first came to England she would have said Ember - she hadn't really believed her family last time she went home & they told her how much her accent had changed.
