The mention of Juno in another post reminded me of something.

Last year I met a Swedish couple who had called their daughter Nike. They were a couple of high brow medics so they certainly weren't influenced by a pair of trainers.

Nike was the goddess of victory. I remember thinking that it's such a shame it is so associated with the sports brand beause otherwise it's a really pretty name.

I'm quite into Goddess names.

It's a silly name. I much prefer Kappa.

its only silly because its associated with the sports brand, if they can rise about it and call their daughter after goddess of victory then well done them

I know I wouldn't have the <ahem> balls to do it grin

she might not thank them for it later but at least she'll be able to buy a tonne of clothes with her name on it grin

I know someone who's daughter has the middle name Adidas. Unfortunately this is after a brand of trainers.

A relative of mine is a teacher. A girl in her class is called Ikea.

<<Disclaimer. There are other outlets available for the purposes of inspiration when naming off spring >>

Not exactly the same.

Nike is actually an very old name - the others are just invented brand names.

I get the whole goddess thing, but Nike now has massive global associations with the sportswear brand, which is the immediate association (if not only association for a lot of people). Unless she moves in very intellectual, academic circles, I have a feeling she'll spend a lot of time explaining herself.

I think it's a lovely name - bear in mind it's pronounced Neekay, rather than to rhyme with 'bike'.

A shame that trainers have rather spoilt it permanently, though!!

Is it pronounced Nike (rhymes with bike) or is it pronounced 'Nai-kee'. The goddess, afaik is the second pronounciation but the shoe brand is the first.

I fear i would always be correcting its pronounciation by the unwashed masses.

I also like the name Athena though. The names are closely linked in greek myth.

in the case of the girl that i met it was pronounced "Nye Key " and not Nike to rhyme with bike.

I know an Ellesse, as in the sports brand, you'd have thought they'd have used Elise really.

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
