we had just decided to name our baby (if a girl) poppy, i love the name and my other 3 kids love it, anyways a week after making that decision dp remembered his bi**h ex has a dog called poppy.
its so not fair, sad

I would still call your dd Poppy! What does it matter what the ex's dog is called?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By TheProvincialLady on Tue 13-May-08 15:37:45
That is a daft reason for not using a name. Use it if you like it, what does his ex or her dog have to do with it?

Shoot the damn dog and be done with it!

oh no sorry he had a dog called Nell

Do you still see his ex? Would she know and think: "A-ha, they've named their daughter in honour of my dog." Or is it just that you'd always think of her and her dog when looking at your dd? hmm

If its taken dp a week to remember the dogs name, then its likely that no one else will remember at all!
Call your baby Poppy if you love it.
I think its a lovely name!

Wahey a name thread where I actually like the name. We were going to call DD1 Poppy but then I think Gail Porter and then someone else stole it. I can understand the OP's reservations TBH.

Oh PM I love the idea of naming a dd after an ex's dog, in honour of said hound!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Nancy66 on Tue 13-May-08 15:50:42
Unless this woman and her dog are still in your life then i can't see that it matters. Poppy is a lovely name.

look i am really sorry to sound like a cow but it isn't the end of the world is it ?

and whining it's not fair sad is just silly. there are 18000 people trapped under rubble in China, thousands starving in burma FGS

call the child poppy and be done

Yes, but this is a section dedicated to children's names - not third world disasters.

I love dogs but I have to say, it's not going to live forever anyway. Your DD will be around for much longer.

f1nut - this thread makes me smile - it's so trivial but I understand why you think it's not fair!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By whinegums on Tue 13-May-08 16:38:10
f1nut, the name both me and DP like for our boy is also the name of a friend's dog! We won't decide finally until he's born anyway, but if I get any grief then it's goodbye to the dog (and the friend). [manic laugh smiley].

What's wrong with a bit of frivolity btw? Are the baby names threads all meant to be deadly serious??!! wink

It's funny how you get fixated on these things isn't it? I actually wondered if it would be ok to use the same name as next doors little girl.

If you love it, use it.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By TheProvincialLady on Tue 13-May-08 17:15:58
Oh dear Lord, now I completely understand why you wouldn't give a child the same name. Poppy was one of our potential names for my DC2 if it is a girl - but after this, no waygrin

Poppy is a lovely name.

The dog won't live forever.

My parents told me that I was named after a dog, it was a joke said in passing, apparently, but I believed it to be true for about 30 years. It didn't scar me for life!

Poppy is lovely go for it, it is not like it his his ex-s name,
now that would be a whole different kettle of fish!

Poppy is number 1 on my list if I'm having a girl, forget the dog and go for it.
