I realise these are all quite masculine - its quite deliberate. What do you think?

Why deliberately masculine, I'm intrigued..?

Pascale is alright. The others are quite nice for a boy.. hmm

If DS2 was a little girl I wanted to call him (her!lol) Pascale.

Am hoping for a girl this time but not so keen on it this time round.

I too like Eliot for a girl, Juno is nice but sounds a bit 'puppyish?!' maybe?

Why masculine?

I only like Juno and I really don't like Pascale, just makes me think of French textbooks.

Juno is in no way a boy's name...she was a Roman goddess, the wife of Jupiter!!

Calling a girl a boy's name will complicate things for her at school. Juno sounds like a D-Day landing. I don't like Pascale either.

Juno is a girl's name.

The other two are not only masculine sounding, they are boy's names. And I also think it's rather cruel, a bit like calling your son Sue.

If you want a strong girl's name there are plenty out there without resorting to boy's names.

I work with a (female) Pascale. It's a lovely name.

Eliot = too popular & everyone will definitely assume it's a boy's name.

Juno - how could that ever be boyish? It's a bloody goddess's name! Unless you're thinking Juno from 'Pic Me'...

Pascale is nice, and is most definitely a girl's name - the male version is Pascal. There are 97,907 female Pascales alive in France according to Meilleurs prenoms (although most of them seem to have been born in 1962 )

Not so keen on Juno, not sure why.

Eliot - never heard of this as a girl's name, but it might work, has quite an American feeling to it for me.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Zazette on Tue 13-May-08 00:40:43
Pasquelle is just illiterate, why on earth would anyone call their child that in preference to Pascale?

Juno is lovely, I used to know a Juno who was tall, elegant, very committed to her work for a big NGO, and lots of fun. But the fact that quite a few people on here think it couldn't possibly be a girl's name is a bit of a problem, IMO (even though they are obviously wrong, they are very sure of their own rightness!). OTOH, maybe I am being just as ignorant, but the only female Eliot I know of is George Eliot, so I think your dd might have a hard time with that one.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By AussieSim on Tue 13-May-08 04:36:56

I love the name Pascale and think it's very pretty but I'm not sure it would be 'right' in a predominantly English-speaking country. The two Pascale's I have known were both French-speaking.

Eliot - great name but I have never heard it used for a girl so if I saw the name written down somewhere I'd assume your DD was a boy.

Juno - would be viewed as quite 'alternative'. If that's what you're after, then cool!

Juno is this year's trend because of the film (and, though I thought the film was great, I don't think I would want to name my child after a character like that).

Eliot is a boy's name. I don't even like it for boys (lots of boys in France get called Eliot/Elliot/Eliott at the moment).

Pascale is the feminine of Pascal, an outdated French name. Not pretty at all.

cripes - this kicked off after I went to bed and I didn't see it. To all the people who said it was 'cruel' to give a girl a 'boys' name they are all girls names. I may have typed a bit quickly by using the word 'masculine'. That isn't what I meant. What I actually meant is that they are not particualarly feminine, whick is what I want. I dont like the girlyness of the ie and y ending names and wanted to avoid that mainly - I wouldn't of course give a girl a boys name, as someone said that would be like calling a boy Sue.

the name I wanted for dd2 is more often used for a boy but is actually unisex and in america more commonly used for either

The OP doesn't mean masculine, she means not girly or "frilly".

Juno is a girl's name (in the UK), but doesn't sound frilly or over-cute or little-girlish.

DP likes the name Alex for a girl as he thinks it sounds tough and assertive.

notabanana in that case when people get pregnant that should be set a list of criterias that apply to which names they can and cannot use

for example

I would only be allowed either Scottish or Irish girls names and nothing deviating from that

its ridiclious to presume that you are only allowed to use a name because its a perfect fit, there are thousands of names out there to choose from and it should be one you love not one you think others will approve of

AND NONE OF THE NAMES SHE IS CONSIDERING HAVE PARTICULARLY MALE MEANINGS

I think its time for me to leave this thread as its not even mine

Eliot is most definitely a boy's name - and a very common one round out way.

Pascale is lovely if you're French - but I think it might sound a bit odd with an English last name.

I like Juno - but everyone will think you've named her after the film.

There are some fab non-girly names - but I really think there's a difference between avoiding a non stereotyped girls name and using a very defintely boy's name. It'll be such a pain for her every time she meets someone she's only known by email at work or something like that. My neice is Sam, and, particularly in a work context she finds it irritating. Particularly as the more senior she gets the mor epeople assume she's a bloke!

anyone who thinks pascale or juno are boys names would be ignorant and needs to read more. Eliot I'll give you on that basis.

Pascale is def a girl's name. But I don't like it because it reminds me of someone who flirted with someone I liked grin.
Juno is beautiful I think, much better than it's Italian equivalent, Giunone...

love Juno but people will say 'Oh like the film!'

Pascale is ok

Not too keen on Eliot for a girl.

I wouldn't say "Oh - like the film" as I have no idea which film you are talking about. I did think like the beach in the Normandy landings but I wouldn't hold that against a name. No one will remember the film in a few years so if you like Juno go for it.

I like Pascale. Ver' Frrrench! A-haw-hi-haw.

Don't like Juno - sounds like a dogs name. Elliot/Eliot is not necessarily a boys name, Elliot from Scrubs, but then she is a fictional character....

Irrespective of whether it's a boy's name or a girl's name, Eliot is very downmarket.
Pasquale would be all right, but would raise eyebrows if there are no French ties in the family.
Juno is trying too hard to be posh.

I like them all. Especially Juno - wished I'd been called Juno, would have gone with my Amazonian physique grin

I love the name Pascale! It was on our shortlist for a girl when we had ds. The only thing i didnt like about it was that it means Easter - if i remember correctly, which just doesnt 'mean' anything to us. Juno is pretty cool too. Not too sure about Eliot - reminds me of the blonde doctor in Scrubs, not that theres anything wrong with her. aaaaah dadada has just said that!

Eliot is downmarket hmm

what makes a name downmarket?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By AitchTwoCiao on Tue 13-May-08 12:16:49
it's downmarket if you think it is, and upmarket if you think it's upmarket.

if you care what others think and the consensus swings in one direction or another, then you might not go for that name.

if you don't care what everyone else thinks, you'll choose the name you like and be happy with it. although your child might not be. grin

I prefer Eliot out of those and I don't think it's downmarket at all.
