What do you think of the girl's name Kerensa/Kerenza (can't decide on the spelling)? I know this is a Cornish name (meaning - love) but was wondering if it was still popular in Cornwall or is it considered old fashioned/common?
It will be either this or Katharine, I just can't decide.

I like both but Katharine would be my first choice.

Carenza means deficiency in Italian hmm

I love Katherine shortened to Kitty or Kate smile
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By hatrick on Sun 11-May-08 19:46:43
Fishie are you known as Katharine or do you shorten it?
Our dd3 has a name which can derive from Katharine [but is also a name in its own right and has been for about a century]

I grew up as Kate / Katie, but reverted back to Katharine when I grew up!

My sis is a Katharine, I'm sure it must be a pain with the more unusual spelling but hey ho - such is life!

Carenza I know from Time Team early days, one of their top archeologists was Carenza Lewis. Lovely name and gorgeous lady.

I quite like Carenza with a C but not keen on the spellings you list. Reminds me of the archaeologist Carenza Lewis from Time Team ... which may not be quite the image you're looking for!

Katherine but with the e not the a.

I think both are nice - Karenza more unusual (the only one I know of it the archaeologist).
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By lizzielu on Sun 11-May-08 19:55:23
Califrau, is it pronounced the same as the name (I don't know Italian)? This has given me something to think about!!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By lizzielu on Sun 11-May-08 20:03:50
I was thinking of Katharine with a K just in case we end up shortening it to Katie. But we probably won't as we named DD1 Elizabeth with the intention of shortening it to Libby but we just got used to calling her the full name Elizabeth and never did shorten it.
In my book of Celtic names Karensa/za is spelt with K - haven't seen it listed with a C before, just as well because of the Italian meaning.

Katherine
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By fishie on Sun 11-May-08 20:13:28
i am a kath which adds to the general dullness. there is something very sturdy about that name.

and it it quite hard to write so my signature is irritating to do.

so many things to think about in names smile

We considered Katya for dd3 but both dd1 and dd2 have names that end in 'a' so we felt it was overkill grin
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By fishie on Sun 11-May-08 20:32:45
what's your surname like lizzielu - katharine is quite a long name, will it balance ok?

and are you already considering diminutives, if so then kitty is lovely. not kath pls. or kathy (horrors). kate or katie or even better katy are allowed.

i do think if it is going to be with a k then should be katharine, catherine for a c.

Katharine goes well with your other daughter's name, but I would think that as I am Catherine Elizabeth grin

I have met a few Kerensas (not surprising in Cornwall) but haven't heard of anyone naming a baby that for a while.. It usually gets shortened to Renz round these parts - make of that what you will..

I went to school with a Karenza (in Cornwall!) She was beautiful and very sophisticated!

Katharine
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Nancy66 on Sun 11-May-08 23:45:26
Katharine most definitely. The others sound like made up chav names...I know they're not but, I'm afraid, that's what they sound like.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Ellbell on Sun 11-May-08 23:57:29
I like Kerensa, but I'm Cornish, so recognise it as a definitely-not-made-up name. I wouldn't use it, though, because of the Italian meaning, but I am unusual in being a Cornishwoman who uses Italian on a daily basis!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By squanderedzeitgeist on Mon 12-May-08 02:24:04
Not madly keen on any...Katharine is a good solid name but not particularly thrilling. However, inifinitely preferable to a made-up name. Kerenza does sound like Carenza ( lacking or missing something/ deficiency) in Italian but it would sound a little more interesting -if you have Cornish roots.

I went to school with a girl called Karenza. Took me about 3 months after starting there to actually remember her name though! blush
I'd never heard it before and kept forgetting lol!

I'm Katherine, not shortened. Karenza is a nice name and more unusual than Katherine, but I like them both!

Katherine. I have a Katherine, and don't know of any other children katherines (iyswim). I like the fact that there are loads of pet names you can use with it. I think it is solid and classy. Only thing to consider is the spelling, we went for Katherine (with the e) because there seemed to be more merchandise for Katherine with the e as opposed to the a. It might not bother you, but it bothered me as a child, so I wanted to use the traditional spelling (which according to most books is with the e, although I have read others that do specify the a!).

I like Katherine (Kitty or Kate not Kath) or Catherine (cate). Although i do like Kerensa too. Not keen on it with a 'z' for some reason ...

Lovely names.

first two sound like Kerosene
