I like the name, but don't like the spelling - looks like a model of car to me, sorry blush

I like Charis, but with that spelling. smile

Not keen on Charis; sorry.

I really like the name Edith though; quite liking some of these older names coming back.

I lso think the name Grace is nice itself too.

Charis is lovely, DD1 has a friend called Charis. There are a few 'Carys's' around too!
(of course they are pronounced the same)

I have a Cerys, but people don't seem to be able to remember it hmm so call her Carys instead!

grin

I think Charis is beautiful, but then I would as it's my daughter's middle name. smile

Mind you a few relatives thought it was pronounced "shar-ees" until we corrected them.

Agree with Alishanty - conjours up the idea of a big lump of cannabis whe spely Charis - but still a pretty name.

I read it a 'ch' aris i am afraid!
i like carys as a spelling of it

Love Edith and Edie though (altho Edie does remind me a bit of Edie McCredie who is quite annoying)
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Alishanty on Mon 12-May-08 20:59:51
Nice name but I would associate it with cannabis. Depends on whether that bothers you or not.

Charis is lovely!!! I would pronounce it 'right' with K, but then again I'm Northern European.

umm when i saw the name Charis, i thought maybe you wanted to rhyme it with Paris. And I was like ...ummm...really? but when i read your post it made better sense.

what about evilyn ?

because karis/karys also sort of reminds people of the brand kerastase of hair products? i don 't know...please don't take it personally i'm from texas and i'm probably pronouncing your names all wrong in my head.

I've had the name Charis on my list for about ten years - it's Myrrdin (Merlin)'s mother and The Lady of the Lake in The Pendragon Cycle. I had to convince Mum that if I use it, I won't be using my surname! (I'll leave that out, but I'm sure you can work it out)

It is pronounced with a hard "ch" as in Loch.

It is a totally different name to the similar sounding Welsh name.

great name, I really like it; as long as your surname isnt Harris

charis is lovely - stick with it

do not worry re spelling - my dd has a name which is usually spelled one way but can be one of 3

I actually chose the russian spelling of her name - more often associated with the boys version

She loves the way it is spelled although once a chav asked her why her name was ' {silly pronounciation') buut at 13 it has never caused issues

I guess you know by now this is the name for a lovely pure type of marajuana. I knew a girl called this and made the mistake of mentioning the other meaning to her mum. She was not a fan of the stuff and hugely unimpressed. [shame]

I like both but agree re ignorant (!) people spelling Charis wrong.

Edith is a lovely name <sticks tongue out at tmmj and expat>. Not totally sure about Edith Emmanuel tho. Oh what a tricky surname!

How about <ponders for ages> Charlotte? Juliette? Helen? mm it's hard isn't it!

We found boys' names easy - but had two girls! We were still arguing over what to call dd2 when I was in the birthing pool!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By SoupDragon on Sun 11-May-08 18:23:13
Oh I know, Procrastinating. there is, of course, nothing wrong with unusual names but you have to be prepared for mispellings and mispronunciations.

Mind you, DS2 has a ordinary name spelt the normal way and it is spelt incorrectly about 90% of the time. [sigh]

I love Carys (welsh) but Charis will find herself ever called CHaris and will spend her life saying "no, K". Carys means Love.

What SoupDragon said.

dd1's middle name is Carys. I wish quite a lot now that it was her first name. Love it.

Edie is nice.

They do, Soup Dragon. But I just consider that I am broadening their phonological horizons.

For Georgette Heyer fans, one of her dippier heroines is called Charis.

Yes, Edith is a bit hard sounding - but Edie is pretty. But I don't really like the same initial for surname and first name, though presumably that doesn't bother you.

Choose what YOU like though, ignore us lot!

yes, procrastinating, these 2 are the only ones dh and i can agree on, we have very different tastes!

I love Charis -- first encountered it on a book character and then was at school with one. But I rejected it as a name because I knew it would get confused with the more common Carys.

Edith is nice too.

but then my DD's name has recently been roundly slated on MN, so what do I know? grin

Charis is a lovely name- something different, and goes great with your surname.

It sounds like one of those stylish brand names like 'Nicky Clarke' or 'Giorgio Armani'- Charis Emmanuel- I love it!

Actually, I'm sure she will hate having to spell it all the time when she is older. But tough. It is the only one of our 4 DCs names that DH and I ever agreed on from the beginning.

I have a Charis. Yes, it is always mispronounced and misspelt but that doesn't bother us. I still think it is one of the prettiest girls' names and I love the meaning.

So there, tmmj. wink

Yeah, janeite, totally agree! left off the biblical names for our ds for that reason.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By cyteen on Sun 11-May-08 18:05:08
No particular reason here, it's just one of those names that doesn't sit right with me. As ever, if you like it then use it, however I do think that Edith Emmanuel sounds a bit...odd. A bit too much like Elizabeth Emmanuel.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By MerryMarigold on Sun 11-May-08 18:03:39
'Carys' is a totally different welsh name, different origin and meaning.

Those that don't like 'edith', any reasons?

Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By cyteen on Sun 11-May-08 17:38:54
It's nice, but people will inevitably pronounce the Ch. If this doesn't bother you, go for it - lots of 'normal' names require constant spelling out, after all.

I don't like Edith, I'm afraid. How about Caroline, Sylvie, Marianne...they all work well with Emmanuel?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By WanderingTrolley on Sun 11-May-08 17:34:17
I think people will pronounce the 'ch'

And yes, people will spell her name incorrectly forever (unless they're Greek) and she will tell people her name and then go onto autospell immediately and spell it out....

<<bitter from own experience and that's only my effing surname>>

I think Carys is the usual spelling.

I love the name Charis and I would spell it that way. I know a few Carys' and a Karis who're all under 3 so not totally unusual.

Or you could just go for Grace?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By themildmanneredjanitor on Sun 11-May-08 17:27:36
both pretty bad imo
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By MerryMarigold on Sun 11-May-08 17:26:58
...for a girl. It means 'grace' in Greek. Think it's pronounced 'Karis'.

Is it too weird? Will people call her 'CH-aris' or spell her name incorrectly all the time?

The other option is 'Edith' (Edie for short).

Our surname is Emmanuel so can't have names ending in 'a' or 'er' (surprisingly few girls' names don't end like that, but good suggestions welcome too).
