I like them both but if it was me I would officially put Eleanor so that she has a choice later on.

Nell, such a lovely name.
I personally wouldn't do the Eleanor or Helen thing though as there are so many shortenings that derive from these two and she may end up as something other than Nell.

Nell. I knew a Penelope who was a nell.

both lovely
Think Nell is a bit more unusual at the mo if that's any help. I'd like Nell for Theoretical Third Child but I don't think DH that keen

I prefer Isla, which is what my friend has just named her baby.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By alfiesbabe on Sat 10-May-08 09:58:58
Prefer Isla. Nell is quite sweet but only as an abbreviation - it's not a proper name.

Isla's beautiful.

As long as your surname doesn't begin with an A like Andrews or something.

My friends little girl is called Aneila and she gets Nell for short, I love it, she is Scottish though and I think the accent makes it sound better, but then I like most names said in a Scottish accent better <ponders>

Isla for me.

Oh I LOVE Nell. Have always thought I might like to use Nell (or Nella) if I ever have a girl.

Isla is a bit less cool, more middle-aged-seeming to me. I just think of Isla St. Clair...

I like Isla MUCH better. Can't get horrid Nelly from Little House on the Prairie out of my head with Nell and my niece is called Nell too. Oh dear. I do think Isla is lovely.

Isla was one of my favourites if littlest manky had been a girl. I love it and also Iona. Not sure about Nell, also think of Little house on the prairie, and the song about Nellie the elephant. Which I know is mad, because it's a nice enough name.

Definitely Nell, i had a great great aunt Nell, I think it was short for Helen or Eleonor, but I prefer just Nell - oldfashioned charm and all that...plus abundance of Eleonors at the mo....agree with snowleopard about Isla, but it's also a pretty and unobjectional name.

I like both. I know a half Japanese baby called Aila (pron the same as Isla) and I love it. Nell is gorgeous but you 'd have to steer very clear of Nelly.
