These are the 2 names me and dp have agreed on and I want to know which one everyone likes best.

They are both pretty but I think I prefer Phoebe.

Abigail is usually Abbie or Abby so it depends how you feel about that shortened version
Not much chance of shortening Phoebe...

They're both quite nice but I think of them both as being a bit prim.

I'd go for Abigail but then call her Abi.

Oh, I like both (mother of two boys, who could only ever think of pretty girls names}

If pushed, think I would choose Phoebe, only because I know of another Abigail (DH's cousin's daughter)

I like Abigail and Abi is fine as a shortening of it.

Both are nice, but I prefer Phoebe.

Abigail is nicer IMO - even when shortened to Abi or Abie. I knew a phoebe who everyone seemed to shorten to 'Feeb' hmm

Phoebe is such a beautiful name, I wish it had 'gone' with our surname - lucky you grin

I prefer Phoebe to Abigail. I like Abi and I like Gail, so I don't understand why I dislike Abigail. But I love Libby! which is like Abby but nicer. So Phoebe or Libby I'd say.

Like them both - Phoebe favourite though.

Posiflump - if it can't be shortened it will be lengthened - DD1s friend is Phoebes grin

Don't really like Phoebe, it sounds a bit pretentious. Abigail is nice though.

I don't think Phoebe is pretentious - it is lovely, and not that common which is a plus - definately prefer it to Abigail

I like Phoebe.

Not pretentious one bit.

I do remember a friend mispronouncing it Phoibe once (like foible but with no l) years ago.

Abigail is a bit bland IMO.

Phoebe was on our girls shortlist, as was Chloe and Erin. A guy I used to work with had a Mini called Phoebe. Abigail is nice too.

They're the names of Roy and Hayley Tuckers' daughters on the Archers! Both nice names though.

I actually think Abigail goes better with Justin though.

..."Justin and Abigail" - sounds nice.

Re: nicknames, after we had named Phoebe, DP's cousin (13) told us that her best friend was also called Phoebe and they all shortened it to "Phub". Classy. Kids will always find something!

Abigail is lovely. And I have a Phoebe, but then I will admit to being very pretentious wink.

We shorten it to Bea, rather than Fee.

It's not super-popular (we don't know any others) but the downside is that you will be forever spelling it out to people.

Abigail is nice.

I don't see the appeal of Phoebe at all.

I think that they are both nice. Abigail shortens nicely but with Phoebe you run the risk of her being known as Feebs, or similar.

Phoebe.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Nancy66 on Sat 10-May-08 08:40:23
Phoebe is a great name - I'm a bit bias because it's what my 8 year old niece is called. She's the only one in her class compared to about half a dozen Chloes and Jessicas.

I always think of an old slapper when I think of an Abi - probably thanks to the likes of Abigail Clancy and Abi Titmuss
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By sweetkitty on Sat 10-May-08 08:40:35
A bit biased as I have an Abigail but definitely Abigail, mine is shortened to Abbie.

Do like Phoebe but agree you will get miss-spellings constanty but then again we do with Abbie.

I like them both.

DD1 has a friend Phoebe, she calls her 'The Phoebster' grin

Prefer Abigail. I wouldn't shorten it to Abi/Abby though, I'd go for Gail.

Here in Germany Abi is used as the standard abbreviation for Abitur (A level exams) so maybe that's why it sounds daft to me. Wouldn't be relevant in the UK though.

You could just keep both in mind and have a look at the baby you get. Abigail is a stronger name to my mind which is perhaps why I prefer it. Phoebe I find more girlish. It wouldn't suit my own dd for instance but I do know little girls who could carry it off well

I like Phoebe but hate "Feebs" so that would put me off.

DH is crazy about Phoebe. I do like it but I keep thinking of what laDiDaDi says...and Friends, although I guess it won't resonate with her friends as it did with our generation...

Both good names in the grand scheme of things- Phoebe is prettier, rather Victorian, and Abigail more 70's...Abigail's party..?
