we can't decide on:

Sebestian (seb)
Oswald (Ozzy)

I realise they are quite strange names but don't want anything ordinary.

Any thoughts?

sebastian

i don't like oswald personally - sorry

Sebestian is nicer IMO. More classic?

I like Sebastian.

Oscar's become Ozzy too.

Sebastian. Ozzy makes me think Osborne.

Sebastian is lovely.

Oswald is a hideous name. Sorry.

Sebastian isn't at all strange. it's nice.

Oswald is more out of the ordinary, but I don't really have any objections to it, apart from the fact I don't like it.

watching....there has been an uprising in the number of sebastians round here. I know of 3!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By claricebeansmum on Wed 07-May-08 17:14:58
But isn't St Sebastian the bloke with the arrows in him (perhaps someone who paid attention in RS can clarify)

Was there a Sebastian in Brideshead? I think it has conotations of class etc
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By watching on Wed 07-May-08 17:16:54
forgot about the oswald mosley - not good esp as dp is nigerian - but he suggested it! I think he was thinking of Oswald Botang!

Also thinking of Anton but we think it will be small and am worried he'll be bullied and called Ant!!

back to the drawing board!

sebastian, two of the ladies on our antenatal thread used it, not sure if either use seb but one uses Bas.

I think of Oswald Bastable.

Assuming you meant Sebastian, then go with that. It's a good name.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By cornsilk on Wed 07-May-08 17:32:13
Don't like either. If I had to choose I'd say Sebastian.

Neither but if I had to choose would definitely be Sebastian. Can you imagine the schooldays of a poor kid called Oswald? shock

My friend has a baby Oswald... I would never have considered it, but I think it's great.

Sebastian is quite ordinary, IMO.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By edam on Wed 07-May-08 17:39:17
I mean, even if you shortened it to Oz, there would always be some sadistic teacher who would read out the full name...
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By treacletart on Wed 07-May-08 17:46:19
Sebastian = v posh Brideshead and teddies , Seb = Toryboy Seb Coe, Oswald = Moseley (tantamount to calling your child Adolf please don't do it!), Ozzy/Ozzie = characterful, cool - Howabout Oscar shortened to Ozzie?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PortAndLemon on Wed 07-May-08 17:47:50
Sebastian (or Anton). I too immediately think of Oswald Mosley.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By DumbledoresGirl on Wed 07-May-08 17:49:20
Sebastian is a fantastic name! One of my favourites.

Oswald just makes me think of Oswald Mosley and even without that connection, is, IMO, an ugly name.

Anton is nice too. So what if he gets called Ant? Nothing wrong with that as a nickname either.

Sebastian - I really, really don't like Oswald (Moseley) or Ozzy - but I used to have a budgie named that so maybe am judging a bit. Sebastian = good, Brideshead = good - what's not to like?!

neither

watching, if you ask for an opinion on an unusual, or strange names...not many people will say they like it. If lots of people liked it, it wouldn't be unusual, because they'd all be using it.

Take a look at the thread about the name James. James is a very popular name, and funnily enough, lots of people say they like it.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By jk1 on Wed 07-May-08 19:29:41
Oswald is a bit who killed JFK but I think you will find Sebastian is on the rise I know of 4 in the last year.

So if you want different Oswald is probably a bit safer.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By PortBlacksandResident on Wed 07-May-08 19:34:09
I immediately thought of Saint Oswald (Celtic Saint) - hanged at Oswestry (Oswald's tree) - head taken to London, may have carried on talking not sure.

I like the name Oswald!

No Sebastian's too 'ott.'
I like Oswald. I'd not thought of it before. Much nobler than Sebastian.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By minster on Wed 07-May-08 19:54:07
Sebastian is far better I think the fascist connotions of Oswald are too strong for it to be useable.

Oswald Mosely. No thanks. Sebastian is lovely.

Sebastien.

The only Oswald people will have heard of is Mosley.

Sebastian is enjoying a resurgence & imo is lovely.

No, to Oswald because of its infamous connotations.

oswald = Mosley - sorry. bit like adolf= hitler. Sorry

surely Oswald Osbourne cancels Mosely out?

I like Sebastian though.

Sebastian - strange? I think not!
Ordinary? I think not!
But getting far to popular. I don't think anyone else should use it. wink

Oswald - now that is strange.

Sebastian is gorgeous but don't shorten to Seb, what a waste of a good name...

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By itwasntme on Thu 08-May-08 15:45:52
My Dh is an Oswaldo.

He hates hates hates his name, and goes by Ozzie, which is actually quite cool on him. Oswald is just as bad imo.

Funnily enough I wanted to call out recently born ds Sebastien, which I think is a beautiful name, and he absulutely hated that name too!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By PrePG on Thu 08-May-08 16:42:45
My DH is Sebastian. It's nice, but to be honest, I find Sebastian a lot to say all the time. Most people call him Seb, except for his mother. Then I feel obliged to call him Sebastian in front of her and it comes out sounding horrible and affected smile But it might just be her wink

Can't imagine Oswald'd be any easier, though. I prefer Sebastian.

Oswald Mosely was a Fascist and friend of Hitler (in reply to belgo). A bit like calling your baby Adolf!
Sebastain quite nice. A big NO to Oswald.
