We say 'Ay (rhymes with Day) -veen', but we spell it Aoibhin. It means 'beautiful sheen'. Lots of variants though. I love Sinead. My BF in school was Sinead. We called her Shin. And Hairy. And Dotty... <<reminisces>>
expat - how is it pronounced? Yvonne?
I worked with a student called Aoibheann.
I had to ask an Irish colleague how to pronounce it
.
I have a Scots Gaelic 'Helen' and a Gaelic 'Rose' (after DH's beloved nana from Cork).
DH had boring boys names. His is pretty boring.
But he was all, 'I dunno. Erm, Ian. James. Scott. Stuart.'
Yawn. I had to be more proactive!

well done all the bumpy ladies!
Sineád is lovely, also Siobhán, Maireád =Margaret /Pearl.
Muireann is lovely also. Aileen / Eileen = Helen / light.
Aisling = dream.
Sionnán is lovely also (pronounced Shun-nawn)
Aoibheann = fair /lovely is pronounced Eve-een.
Aidan = fire is lovely for a boy also.
this is quite a nice site for celtic names!

misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:45:41
i'm about 80% certain its another girl for me as well.
the trust where i had my first didn't offer 20 weeks scans. i'm not throwing up so much now. just the heartburn again. like i said, i'm about 90% certain it's another girl.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:38:00
oh thats good expat. as found out recently that not everywhere in scotland gets a 20 week scan. has the sickness subsided at all? have had a better couple of weeks, but still plaugued by dreadful headaches.
Without a doubt.
By
snice on Tue 06-May-08 22:34:54
Imogen goes well with your other names and has the E and N thing going on. Sinead is pretty though.
Yes, we get a nuchal scan and 20 week scan standard. More if your nuchal comes back high risk or you develop anaemia, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:34:29
i have no idea how to do that on a pc lgj, so can i be excused
Almost....
If you want to be
picky constantly explaining you could really go to town and go for the fáda. (accent)
So technically, it should be Sinéad.
But I think it is a fab name and should be more widely used.
{biased emoticon}

misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:28:55
princess mel, dont worry, i wont kill you for saying that.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:28:15
very nice (now i know how to say them
)
do u get a 20 week scan up where you are?
i am being bombarbded with scans, inc specialist ones at guys hospital again. double whammy due to dh (viral) heart probs and dd1 leaking valve. so will get to see this little one loads, as will also be having growth scans every 4 weeks due to gestional diabetes last time.
Mirren and Strewn, well, that's how it's said around here, there's a wee boy in P4 of Dd1's soon-to-be school with that name. But not any others I've seen. Actually, one of the students I used to work with, a wee girl from Ayrshire, is the one who suggested it.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:24:13
expat how do you pronouce those
bernard is a v v long running joke, dating way back to when i was pregnant with dd1. dh says it like 'Buuuuuurn-nard' in a deep gruff voice. it is actually growing on me, its only taken over 8years to get me to like it lol.
LGJ, did i spell Sinead correctly?
I don't like it. Sorry, bit you did ask.
So you're not really considering Bernard as an alternative to Isaac if it's a boy
.
Ooops. Sorry! I like both names.
I'm hoping the nausea abates soon - a little over 15 weeks now
.
Heartburn kicking in.
I'm reasonably sure it's another girl, but may or may not be proven wrong on 13 June.
If it's a girl, she'll be Muireann. If it's a boy, he'll be Struan.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:19:31
ex[pat how you doing? i think dh would wet himself with laughter if i actually suggested bernard seriously. he has been joking about it for so so long.
OOOOOOOooooH I saw this thread in work, and I have a self imposed rule not to post. It is a truly wonderful name.
I like Bernard, too.
By
chonky on Tue 06-May-08 22:15:49
Sinead's a lovely name, and really unusual (have only ever met one Sinead before).
Bernard's lovely - you
really should go for it you know
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:13:56
lol BBM. what do u think of Bernard
Sinead lovely by the way - makes me think of Sinead Cusack (married to Jeremy Irons).
- just googled 'Issac' to see what came up and all I got was 'International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation'
Anyway, 'tis an awful name no matter how you spell it - don't use it at any cost
!
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:11:59
have checked, and its def Isaac, thanks for correcting me.
googling names brings up some fascinating spellings of names.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:10:47
ooo is it.
will make sure i spell it right
I like Sinead!
Agree with BBM - standard biblical spelling is Isaac
Agree with BBM - standard biblical spelling is Isaac
cross posted! I'm guessing it can be Izaac too?
spelling was never my strong point!
Um.....conventional spelling is Isaac if that is what you are after but I have seen a lot of variations - some are foreign spellings and some look pretty much made up to me <disclaimer - I'm not a name spelling expert but I do know the conventional spelling of Isaac>
emmaline? (has the ne thing going on...)
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 22:02:02
Issac. I think thats the way it was spelt in my bible lol.
oh and HI congratulations and how are things!
Boys name is nice too (are you spelling it Isaac or Issac? Are they said the same?) dn (nephew) is called Isac
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 21:55:09
If its a boy, he will be called Issac. But i think bernard will work for a nick name. dh kept saying he would call dd1 bernard as a joke if she was a boy, and now its a long running joke. am hoping to find out at 20 week scan.
Is nice and goes nicely with the others as does Emma/Emily.I am however too chicken to try and spell it now it is no longer on my screen! (Is the being reminded of his consultant a bad thing?) Any advance on Bernard for a boy? will you be finding out? what about second names?
Love it.
By
Blocky on Tue 06-May-08 21:46:57
If you love the name go for it, I don't think it matters too much about your heritage/ cultural background. You might want to reflect that in the names you choose for your dc, or you may not give a flying fig and choose a name just because you like it. I have Irish names for my dc's, but I am from an Irish background. However, my friend (Jamaican descent) called her dd Sinead, and it really suits her.
By
Vulgar on Tue 06-May-08 19:31:03
I know a lovely sinead aged 8. i don't think of sinead O'conner any more
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 19:13:27
Sinead Venus williams? hmmmmm maybe dd3 is serena dixie. i love the name dixie but we arent that brave to use it as a first name. i do regret not using it as her first name though.
i think it's cool. thoguh i think Venus would be cooler (i love Venus Williams!)
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 18:50:49
yes agree
yes. but I'd say more of a Sh'n-ade than a Shanade. My neighbour has a Shanay (please remember I am in California). Subconsciously I think of her as a Sinead cos it's nicer!
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 18:44:26
The girl's name Sinead \s(i)-nead\ is pronounced sha-NADE. It is of Irish origin. Variant of Jane or Janet, which are feminine forms of John (Hebrew) "the Lord is gracious". Sinead was made familiar to Americans by singer Sinead O'Connor. ^^do u think that the above is correct?
By
janeite on Tue 06-May-08 18:42:06
Congratulations Misdee - I'd missed that you were pregnant. Sinead is nice and fits well with your other girls' names.
I like Sinead. It works well with your other 3.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 18:27:21
kittywise, my dads side of the family have old irish roots, does that count? (i am talking about going back loads of generations). dh family is scottish.
but lots of parents chose names outwith their own culture - why notjames = scottishrachel = hebrew
I think it's ok as a name BUT I also think that if you're not Irish(maybe you are!) then it's a daft thing to do.
Sinead is a fabby name if you can stand telling people how to pronounce it
yes - like matilda but without the 'a' sound. sounds gorgeous with an irish accent!
I think it's Ma-tild
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 15:56:31
thankyouandgoodnight, i dont know quite has to pronouce that one,. sorry.
Mathilde?
Congratulations! Sinead is lovely - one of the few Irish names that everyone knows how to pronounce. I have to admit, though, that I adore Bernard.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 11:08:14
i also keep returning to Emma/Emily but peter doesnt particually like those names. His consultant was Emma, and th two ladies at livelifethengivelife and Emma and Emily lol.
I like Sinead and am not sure why, but I think Emma goes well with the other three.
I say go for it. I have three with Irish names much wierder more unusual than Sinead and nobody has that much trouble pronouncing them. Spelling now, is a different matter, but then nobody can spell anything right these days.
it's nice misdee! my only worry might be the spelling/pronounciation thing but most people would recognise it.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 10:28:32
so anyone got anything bad to say about it? does it rhyme with anything nasty?

Lol at Malory patronisingly patting your back. I think it is lovely Misdee, sounds nice with your surname too. I went to school with a Sinead who we all called Nay, she was lovely.
(only name advice tho-dont come asking about water births or perineums)
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 10:18:18

By
mears on Tue 06-May-08 10:16:56
Congratulations misdee
I have a lovely friend called Sinead so I think it's very nice. At school no-one could ever pronounce/spell her name though. But nowadays perhaps the fame of Sinead O'Connor will help with this though. (Disappointed you are not going for Venus though...)
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 10:15:17
yes mears. 12 weeks now.
oh MT i really keep chucking daft names at dh just to see his reactions. he keeps saying if its a boy he will call it Bernard. which isnt that daft but reminds me of an old man, or that book 'not now bernard' lol.
By
Buda on Tue 06-May-08 10:15:09
I like it and it goes well with your other DD's names.

By
belgo on Tue 06-May-08 10:10:26
but that's not really a bad thing, to think of Sinead O'connor, is it?
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 10:10:13
nooo cant use Siobhan (?), reminds me of a girl at work.
yes the O@ Connor thing did spring to mind.
But i have a Serena Williams. and have already dismissed Venus
It sounds fine to me. Do you have any Irish connection (as it will be assumed from the name)? Also, having 2 children with Irish names, be prepared to have to spell it to absolutely everyone.
sinead fits but i will always think of sinead o'connor!
By
JodieG1 on Tue 06-May-08 10:09:03
I really like that name.
I like it and it goes with your other dd's names
By
belgo on Tue 06-May-08 10:08:42
It's a lovely name. So is Soibhan (sp?)
O'Connor.
By
misdee on Tue 06-May-08 10:07:52
Still strugglin with girls names.
One that wasnt immediantly dismissed and is now the first girls name we have actually considered serious, was Sinead.
We have a Nicole, Lauren and Serena. Someone on another thread pointed out that all have E and N in them. and they work well together. Does Sinead fit in there?
