Carmen for a girl
and Hugh for a boy?

Carmen is a very pretty name and sorry, makes me think a)mad opera wifie or b)carmen miranda and mad fruitbowl hat. But i do like it!

Hugh, Hugh Barney McGrew Custard Dibble and...

Hugh is ok but not inspiring imo. does it sit nicely with surname?

I know a Carmen. It has somewhat coloured my view hmm
Prefer Huw to Hugh but not overly keen on either.

Carmen is nice. Hugh is not particularly exciting or offensive, like John. So if that's what you are going for that's not bad!

Don't like Carmen. Hugh....a bit bland I think personally.

Not keen on Hugh at all. Conjures up posh Hugh Grant types.

Carmen is beautiful.

Not keen on either tbh.

I don't like either of them, sorry. Carmen reminds me of Carmen-Miranda with fruit on her head and Hugh, well, just no, really.

Why doesn't Romy Smith work? I prefer I think it's a prettier name than Carmen.

Love Romilly (there's a TV news reporter called Romilly Weeks IIRC) and Romy (Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion - movie)
Quite like Hugh spelt Huw

What's wrong with Romy?

Love Romilly too.

Just personally I don't fancy Carmen Smith as a name but that's just me and I would no doubt like it once I got to know the person.

Hugh I am not tremendously keen on but it's fine. Nice with Smith.

Carmen Smith reminds me of the film 'Carmen Jones'
Really sorry but don't think Carmen and Smith sit well together. It's like the Carmen is a desperate attempt to jazz up the Smith iyswim. No offense...
I would go for something with more syllables.

I love Hugh for a boy... went to school with a real cow called Carmen, so that has clouded my judgement.

Carmen's great.

I like Hugo better than Hugh - I think more than one syllable is better with Smith

I like Carmen. Hugh....not sure, but its a sound, sensible name, can't be shortened but could be lengthened to Hughie

I like Carmen - used to work for one and she had a C called Carmen too.

Not so keen on Hugh. Every Hugh I have known has been called Huge.

Don't really like Carmen, and HATE Hugh. Romilly Smith sounds good though

Carmen is nice, Hugh is a middle aged bloke with a paunch. Works in the tax office.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the 'does it sit with the surname' stuff, becasue chances are when she is older she will marry and change her name anyway and you won't be able to take every possible future surname into account when choosing her first name.Personally, I think Romy or Romilly are much prettier than Carmen. Not overkeen on Hugh, but as long as YOU are comfortable with it, you shouldn't worry what anyone else thinks. Good Luck.

love them both, went to university with a Carmen - lovely name,

Hugh is very cool
or Hugo

I really like Romilly but doesn't go with our surname

Carmen and Hugh are nice but don't have the wow factor for me although not much does TBH which s why I struggle with baby names.

What's wrong with Romy Smith? (I think you do have to give thought to the 'does it sit with the surname' stuff, because before she reaches marriageable age she has to navigate school with some measure of dignity and self-esteem intact... but I can't for the life of me see anything wrong with "Romy Smith")

Carmen Smith is nice.

Hugh Smith seems a bit short and choppy. What about Hugo Smith?

Love Carmen, and Carmel. I also like Romy. (But Romilly is fab) Hugh, er...no. Just can't imagine a baby called Hugh...
