OK - would next DS be Sinister?

Also serial killer on TV atm - would that bother you?

There was a Dex on Dynasty many moons ago - possibly he was even Dex Dexter. It is quite American. Also a bit plasticky.

Sounds nice and modern without being too off the wall.

BUT

It's a breed of cattle. Would you call him Jersey, or Hereford?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Eleta on Fri 02-May-08 14:44:23
You have come up with some of the same negatives that are bothering me. I am worried it sounds American and tacky.

I am not worried about it being a breed of cattle as I don't feel many people would know that and it is a proper name

The TV series is my fave programe at the moment, that's what got me thinking about it blush I know that's not a great reason behind naming a child!

Dexter...hmmmm, not sure
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By nooka on Fri 02-May-08 14:48:09
I've never heard of that breed before (now of course I have Googled itgrin)I don't think the association puts people off calling their sons Angus or their daughters Kerry so I wouldn't worry about that. To me it's Dexter's laboratory, which we like - in fact one of our servers is called Dexte (dh is a total geek). I'd be worried if someone suggested calling their offsping Black Baldy though!

smile at this name. ds was very nearly called Dexter Morgan , dp and I were laughing about it the other night as we watched 'Dexter' on the telly. I'm so pleased we called him Jake now.

I like it very much! Although I live in west london where unusual names seem quite common - if you know what I mean [sceptical]

Do you have other DC and does it sit well with their names?

I love it Mind you, I used to have a mad crush on Dexter Fletcher when I was a Press Gang-watching teen, so you may want to discount my advice.

I do not know a Dexter over here. There are too many Josiahs and Elijahs atm. If it is very american it's also not in fashion!

I like it, but something about it would stop me using it. Not entirely sure what though!
Does make me think of Dexter Fletcher as another ex Press Gang fan.

Mmmmm Dexter, still got some in the freezer, very tasty, on another note I like it.

I really like it. Again on the basis of both Dex Dexter and Dexter Fletcher. Names with an X I I really like.

Isn't there an MNer with Dexter (or possibly even 2) It's not my kind of name, but I think it's an ok name. I certainly wouldn't hmm at a child with that name at all.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By jivegirl on Fri 02-May-08 17:40:25
Hi Eleta - I'm with you on this one. Find myself strangely drawn to 'Dexter' but don't think I'd actually take the plunge..

Again I'm another one probably reminiscing after my youth.. Dexter Fletcher - yum.

I really like it. In some parts of the country no-one bats an eyelid at more unusual names, in other places more "normal" names are used. I know when my sister was trying to think of a name I ran through dd's year list. Her response to some of the more unusual names was "he'd be teased mercilessly round here with that name!"
Just something to consider.

I like the sound of the name but it's too trendy for my liking.

Dex Dexter...Dynasty

Dexter...the serial killer on TV

Too American

Trying to be different

Tis a surname

Tis chavvy

tis not good.

What about Ned?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By pointydog on Fri 02-May-08 17:47:08

pmsl - Collision you are crazy about the name Ned aren't you?

I think Dexter is fine, seems to be in fairly common use at the moment.
Met a little Rex the other day which I prefer.

Ruby, I've allowed that if we ever have a ds he can be Finnigan and the next one Dexter. What's wrong with me? Or dh and his strange interests? Nobody ever gets the reference!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Eleta on Fri 02-May-08 17:59:03
It's actually an English name but I agree it sounds American.

I like the serial killer on tv. I think he has the right idea grin

I think eveyone has got abit obsessed with names sounding 'chavvy', and while I agree it isn't a 'classy' sounding name, it's not very popular at all and so I don't agree that it is chavvy

I like Ned but surname begins with N, so would look silly
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By collision on Fri 02-May-08 18:14:02
LOL Hatrick. I wondered if anyone would ever pick up on the fact that I always recommend Ned as a name!

I couldnt use it as our surname begins with N but it is such a lovely simple underused name!

My 3 SILs all had boys in the last 6 weeks and none of them used Ned. I am trying to get someone to use Imogen too as I think it is lovely and again, underused.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By 2point4kids on Fri 02-May-08 18:19:16
Dexter is my favourite boys name!
I really wanted to call DS2 Dexter and ummed and ahhed about it all the way through the pregnancy but didnt in the end as our surname starts with D and sounds really daft next to it..
DS2 ended up being a Ted, short for Edward (so close to a Ned collision wink)

I have a friend who has a son called Dexter -he is in his mid-teens now and he loves his name (always has apparently). I bet you'll know if your DS is a Dexter or not the moment you see him!
