I like it, depends if it goes with your other children's names though.(if you have others)

Isn't it an abbreviation?

Lots of Nicolas in france are called Nico.

I like it, I know a couple (admittedly they are greek, and it's a nickname, the full name being Nicolas)

We are expecting a boy in July and Nico is one of the three final name choices we have for him. We like Nicola [my dad is Italian] and Niccolo but want Nico.
Good choice imo.

Nico is often an abbreviation of the surname Nicoll in Scotland. It can be the "handle" of neds with that surname.

only if he has a brother called rambo

I like Nico a lot but think he might want to be Nicolas so he has the use of both and then Nick as he gets older.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By castille on Thu 24-Apr-08 14:39:36
How would you want it pronounced?

Nick-oh sounds a bit silly. Neeko is much better.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By neolara on Thu 24-Apr-08 14:40:46
Three Nico's in one of my DD's toddler groups last year.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By neolara on Thu 24-Apr-08 14:41:20
Nicos.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By hatrick on Thu 24-Apr-08 14:43:13
Neeko

Do not like Nicky or Nick so we will not be calling ds Nicholas, Nicola and Niccolo we both like.

Met someone who knows a little Nico, he is just Nico [his dad is Italian] they decided against Nicola because they felt it would be mispronounced over here.

Love it. Went travelling years ago and spent some time with some French people. The guy was called Nicholas but shortened to Nico. Really contemplated it for a boy myself.

To be honest I don't like it if your roots are not Greek or Italian. In Greece it is a very common abbreviation of the even commoner name Nicos. That is fine. Over here it just sounds like you are trying to exotic.

However, I appreciate I am in a minority with this opinion. I am also one of the few that hates the name Luca unless you are from Europe. Our neighbourhood has hundreds of little english boys called Nico and Luca. IMO it would be better to use the names Nick and Luke.

Well my dad is Italian - he would love us to call ds Luca but dh is not keen. Nico is dh's favourite though.

Went to school with a Nico. He was expelled for dealing drugs but he was very handsome.

I think I like it.

Yes, have said it out loud a few times (puzzled 11mo dd is staring at me like a loon) and I definitely like it.

Natrick - if your dad is Italian then I think it is a nice name. As long as a name has relevance to your family and heritage then I think it is a good choice smile.

Artichokes, well he will have a very unItalian sounding surname [O'Pray] and won't look vaguely Italian so I am sure many people will roll their eyes and assume we have no Italian links and are just using it regardless. grin

Sowofhands your post made me lol

Nico is much nicer than Luca, which is becoming a bit chavtastic, especially on non-Italians.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By hatrick on Thu 08-May-08 18:04:45
Luca is lovely though, is it really becoming chavvy?[whatever that really means]
Prefer Nico anyway..

If you are not Italian or Greek don't do it unless you are married to the local drug pusher thats what the one in our town called one of his 10 kids by different mothers!
