I like Finn, but not Finlay. People use them interchangeably, but to my mind, Finlay is one name and Finn (two 'n's) is another name - a lovely Irish name. Finlay does seem to be very common these days, but then not everyone wants an unusual name. Do you love it? That's what matters.
I really don't like the name at all but I certainly wouldn't be sorry for a little boy with the name - it's all about personal taste isn't it? There are a lot worse names about out there IMO.
I'm in Scotland and every second little boy I meet is called Finlay. I love it as a name, but wouldn't use it now because of that. If i lived elsewhere though I would.
wanted to added our little boy 14 months is a finlay...we didn't realise it was so popular..or that there was a naff cbeebies fire engine with the same name.
we think its a great name...hes 3/4 scottish...his middle name is robert so we call him fin-bob most of the time..but we will stop it before it sticks
Hehe, Fin-Bob is very very cute. Mine will be Finlay Joseph. Fin-Jo doesn't have the same ring does it?
A question to all those with Finlays. Do you shorten it to Finn or Fin? I think it looks nicer with the extra n but maybe a little unnecessary and odd?
I have become very fond of Fin in all its forms, Finlay, Finley, Finton, Finbar etc. I'd go with the one 'n' myself as I'm lazy. Contrary to your original post, I've always found the feedback on Fin to be very positive, which is almost certainly why I've grown to like it. Even if people don't its DEFINITELY not there with the Jaydens, KC's & TeeJays's. Not that there's anything wrong with them, I hasten to add, just not to my taste!
Personally couldn;t use it as DH doesn't like the name, and besides it is too similat to my sister's boyfriends surname (incase they get married and all that),
Ds is Finley (daft boring reason as to why we went with the e instead of a). We shorten it to Fin because we also felt that the extra n was a little random but agree it does look nicer.
We know of 2 other Finlay/Finleys, it is becoming more common but still only just made it into the top 50 so there aren't classes full of them. The odd thing about little Finns is that they all seem to look the same, when we go on holiday you can spot them a mile off! In a good way of course.
I love Finlay as a name (A member of my family is one) It suits him. His mum picked it as it is a Scottish name, he occasionally gets called Fin but not very often.
Finlay is lovely and nothing like Jayden. Finlay is a legitimate name with history (and is in fact a royal name, did you know that?). Ignore the PP, she obviously has little knowledge. Flynn is more like Jayden, Tyler, Bailey etc because it is a surname. Finlay is is a solid handsome name and I urge you to use it!
Oh no Connie, so you do think it's like Jayden? I was kind of saying that tongue in cheek, expecting it to be a ridiculous claim. I know of two Finlays and they come from very middle-class families, not at all the types that would use Jayden! Stress!
I have a Finn...so am biasedWasn't popular when we named him[we have been copied] We now live in Ireland where it is not at all popular...Even in Irish spelling. Call your ds what you want.Best not to tell anyone in advance really.Everyone[like myself]will have an opinion.
Love the idea of name changing Fillyjonk. Our Finn anted to be called Bob or Kevin.I wanted to be called Jane when younger as was fed up with spelling my name and people looking at me oddly when I said it.Don't mind it know.and ds1 hasn't mentioned it for a couple of years.
Oh yes, I consider the names you just listed to be very that way too. Finlay (to me, and it seems everyone else (but you)), is not in the same league as those names! I think (and hope) that you are wrong on this one.
The thing is, I know plenty of ruffians named George, Harry, Thomas, Alex, Henry ('Enry), Sam and Max and I mean ROUGH! But, I wouldn't say this has affected my views much on the names.
5 or 6 of various ages......its a very popular name. If you love it then go with it and don't let any negative comments stop you. Not everyone has been positive about the names of my DC.
I think the problem for me with Finlay is that it started out as a funky kind of interesting name (kinda like Oscar) but perceptions of it have changed. I think Oscar will go the same way as Finlay has (or will). Just my honest opinion.
I love the name Finn, quite like Finlay, but really wanted Finnian for ds1, sadly dh didn't like it. Am very happy with what we chose in the end though.
There is an MNer on here with a Finnian (have forgotten who, and she may not let on anyway ), just love that name
Ok so out of 60 of you only one thinks it's trashy (and i'm not sure I trust her.. six Finlays and they are all chavs I think a case of exaggeration is going on there )
I'm pretty sure that if I posted the name Jayden, 59 of you would say it's trashy with one saying it's safe (you all seem quite honest from the Tyler post)
So it's safe, solid, decent, handsome and classy. Thanks to every one.
Of course they're classy names.....in my opinion, perhaps not in everybodys but thats life.
I never said chav or trashy.....they're your words. I said it was of similar ilk to names such as Jayden et al. Make of that what you will.
If you want all 60 posters to agree with you and say 'how fabulous' then don't start a post asking what people think of a name.
Really not sure why I even bothered posting in the first place - seems like you had made your mind up already and tbh I don't care what other people call their babies.
Finlay is a lovely name and Fin/Finn a good nickname. From this thread, I see it's regarded as a popular name but the only one I know is my 17yo nephew (who's a quarter Scot).
"I said it was of similar ilk to names such as Jayden et al. Make of that what you will."
Well, what did you mean then if you didn't mean chav or trashy?
"If you want all 60 posters to agree with you and say 'how fabulous' then don't start a post asking what people think of a name."
What is your point here? I was just summarising on all the responses I had. I only received one bad response (yours) to my chosen name, so I am reassured.
"Really not sure why I even bothered posting in the first place - seems like you had made your mind up already and tbh I don't care what other people call their babies."
Is this because I haven't responded to your claims in the way you would have hoped?
Anyway, I don't want to have a cyber row so let's leave it alone now.
Finlay/Finn is very much a Boden wearing, smoothie drinking, violin playing boys' name here in Muswell Hill. Just shows that names can differ from postcose to postcode. Personally I really like the name.
It was the name me and dp chose for our ds - but then decided against it as it really doesnt go with dp's surname AT ALL! But I think its a great name (just a shame about dp's stupid name!) It always reminds me of the colour blue for some reason! Wierd, I know. I prefer Finlay to Finn.
if you can live with 5 years of "Finley the Fire engine" gags (doesn't help it is a very catchy tune) then it's perfectly pleasant and unobjectionable.
Thanks for all the positive replies. I must admit, I have been really really down about it. My DH is adamant that his name will be Finlay. I am now desperately worried about the few negative comments it received. I've even been dreaming about it... it's taking over my life! My in-laws have reassured me a bit, they say it's as classic as say Thomas, George, James etc is down here. And seeing as we'll probably move to Scotland in the future...
My ds2 was very nearly Finlay Joseph but there seemed to suddenly be a lot of babies born locally named Finlay so he is Dylan Joseph instead.
We were stuck between the 2 so that was the deciding factor, not the only reason. Popularity nationally wouldn't bother me but knowing he'd be going to school with several children all with the same name seemed a bit much.
We had a few comments about our choice of name, Magic Roundabout obviously and also SIL said 'oh did you know there was a poet called Dylan something?' I think I may have heard of him... But stuff 'em, noone is going to like every name, its what you really like and what you think of it that matters.
There is a name Fionn (pronounced) fyunn, not Feeyon like whatshisname's wife. that blonde tory boy....... u know who i mean.
I like Findlay, Finley, but I think I have a slight preference for Fionn. I don't know any. Fintan and Finbar would be two new ways of reaching 'Finn'.
we gave up telling people what we were going to call dc2 (which was Findlay if she was a boy) as you are never going to please everyone and people seem to think it is ok to critisize your choices when baby isnt born yet, and then insulted if you call dc a name they didnt like. It is your decision. Findlay is lovely.
i love it its my 7 month old nephews name, they shorten it to Fin for day to day use. Its defo nat chav here - cheltenham (regency cheltenham i would like to add sweety darling)!!!!!!!!! o and must do lunch *air kiss air kiss*
Wow, I am surprised to see that my thread has been bumped up! Perfect timing for me to announce his arrival!! Finlay Joseph arrived on April 26th weighing 7lb 11oz. He most definitely suits his name, my fair-haired warrior! He is absolutely perfect.
