How awful. But I can't help but snigger at the sheer horror of the creature we call the MIL.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By WiiMii on Mon 10-Mar-08 17:23:18
lol...she probably thought you'd take it as a compliment. Seriously!

shock

I would have to say something like I'm sure DD will love it when she's older that you called your dog after her, and hops she gets the sarcasm!

My dd(3 at the time) named her Guineau Pigs after her best friends at Nursery - it was meant as a compliment by her. You would think an adult would have more sense though.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By ratbunny on Mon 10-Mar-08 17:27:15
of all the names she could have chosen!
does she see your dd very often? maybe she misses her? (trying to rationalise the madness of the act!)
your next pet should definitely be named after her!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By MingMingtheWonderPet on Mon 10-Mar-08 17:31:16
Now that is weird!

What was she thinking?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By currantbunmum on Mon 10-Mar-08 17:31:21
I named one of our cats after my Grandad, Norman George. But I would be horrified to have MIL name her dog after DD!

Maybe you could buy a tarantula / toad/ snake and name it after MIL, to ahem, repay the complimentwink

I must admit when i say it out loud i laugh also but it is such a cheek..it is deff not because she misses my dd as we only live 10 mins away and she never bothers with us! my friend gave me a great idea to get her back though for her birthday i'm going to adopt her a pot bellied pig called felicity from the hillside animal sanctuary and ( her name is felicity also lol). So we will see how that goes down grin her bday is in april !

And the confusion when they are together...

"Who is taking H out on a walk" - both go madly excited
"Time for H tea" - both go madly excited
"Time for bath H" - both go hysterical

I think if she was the kind of grandmother who doted on the kids it would be different...but she just has no interest in her grandchildren and we stopped visiting her because everytime we went over she would shout at the kids for touching anything esp her patio doors or glass internal doors and my kids would leave in tears with me biting my lip trying not to lamp her....she can barely tell my 2 kids appart and when dp told her off about it she says well they look the same! there is 2yrs between them!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Broodymumof2 on Mon 10-Mar-08 18:03:03
lol yes that is the other thing.. claricebeansmum she is a very loud woman she shouts when she talks and when she shouts at the dog you can see my dd tremble thinking its her she is talking to!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By QueenMeabhOfConnaught on Mon 10-Mar-08 18:04:07
God, she sounds an absolute charmer - she can't tell the kids apart?

Perhaps next time you could say: "This is the child you named your dog after and this is the other one." Maybe then she'd remember!

This is downright odd of your MIL. However, I did laugh very hard when I read the OP thinking it was a joke.

Love the adopt-a-pig idea. I so hope you follow through with it. grin

refuse to call it holly - call it polly or millie or molly or something and if she picks up on it just say

'sorry, I didn't think for one second you'd name a dog after your beloved grandaughter?!? shock'

make sure and teach your Holly to call it by the wrong name too

<<my dog is called hollie but she's 6yrs old and we don't really know you so hope I've not offended you too winkgrin>>

Not quite in the same league, but when I was a district nurse many years ago I used to visit a family where the son and dog had the same name...

My grandma (my mothers mother) had a male dog called by my name (to be fair, unisex name when shortened).

it never occurred to me throughout my childhood (I ADORED the dog... & indeed my grandmother) it just seemed like a happy co-incidence) but my mum recently said she named it after I was named - my mother was FURIOUS and never really forgave her ...
The moral is? Your Hollie won't mind smile

Well, at least she likes the name you chose. My MIL's first words on hearing of dd's arrival and name were 'That name reminds me of the back streets of Belfast'.

Which was quite mild considering her comment on arrival of ds...

She's a bitch. (You choose which one: dog or owner).

Although my sister's kids called their pet rabbit the same name as my brother's still born third son.

We were.....surprised......shock

Ring RSPCA and insist dog is maltreated and have it rehomed in , er,..the Shetlands. Problem solved! But dont let her read this in case she gets wise and tries to nick the idea and confiscate DD first!grin

Mad!! But quite funny.

My rellies spell DS name wrongly ...drives me mad but am going to bide my time until I can coach DS at about 4 yrs to tell them off and correct them!!

My aunt has given one of her dogs the same name as my DD2.
We think it's quite funny actually - especially when she signs cards "licks from XXXXXX" grin

Certainly not worth getting stressed over!!!

hahaha..this thread reminds me of the time i was a t a friends house with all the kids playing in and out of the house ( hot summer. her neighbours dog cam running into the garden and she yelled "X get out" at the top of he r face. Before id even realised the connection, my ds2 who was 3 at the time started walking down the street..

they had the same name and he thought he was being told to get out! they changed the dogs name the next day!

Had me really confused when we first met as I knew her husband's name was Mike - I just couldn't figure out who this "Pete" was she kept saying she'd been to the park with shock

Felt very blush when I found out who "Pete" was!!!!

Broody, I think I can top that! grin

When our dd1 was born, H wanted to call her Gemma. Nothing wrong with that, you might think, except that our Border Collie was also called Gemma.

I tried to explain the complications that would follow. His response? "Well, the dog's not going to be around forever".

DD1 was almost seven when the dog died.

When I was a kid, our dog was called Winnie. After my Nana. sad My mom really didn't like her mom - Nana wanted one of her grandkids called Winnifred, and I think Mom came under a fair bit of pressure over this, because she produced the last two grandkids.

Rather than calling either of us Winnifred, though, she called the dog that.

(Nana also wanted her last grandkid, my sister, born on Nana's birthday, like her first grandkid had been. I should have more sympathy for my mom in this situation, shouldn't I ...)
