We have a baby who has always slept well and woken just once a night at 4am for a feed. She goes to sleep on her own in the evening and for her daytime naps and settles herself easily without crying so is definitely ready to sleep through. She just won't break the habit of the 4am feed and we are shattered as by the time she has fed and gone back to her cot it's a short time before our three year old is up at 6. We have tried leaving her to cry but it just makes her gulp more and more hysterically and after two hours we gave in (tried twice). This week we have tried my partner going in and stroking her when she wakes and just giving her water. She doesn't seem to mind not having the breast at night but it takes even longer to settle her and she has started going hysterical unless she falls asleep in his arms. So we are considering going back to giving her a feed at night just because it's quicker to get her back off again. Any other tips or ideas?

give her a feed and get yourself back to bed as soon as possible! she will drop it when shes ready and forcing the issue sounds grim for both of you. She has no idea why you normally respond and then suddenly dont come for 2 hours so no wonder she gets so upset. If its any consolation my 10.5month old wakes for a feed at 11, 2 and then up for the day at 5 and thats a good night! so it sounds as tho shes doing really well and I bet will sleep thru soon.

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
