DS usually has 2 naps a day at home but recently doesn't always seem to need them or want them (he will mess around in his cot quite happily for up to an hour before being convinced that sleep would be good). At nursery (2 days a week) he just has one nap after lunch for usually 1 hr but has done 3 hrs!.

He seems ok on it, so i'm wondering whether to move him to one nap at home?

The other day i decided to give it a go and tried to keep him up til lunch but he got a bit grouchy so i put him down. He still took a while to settle but slept 3 hours (10.30-1.30) so had a late lunch. I would be happy with this if he managed 2-3 hours every day!

His routine is all over the place after a few days away, so i'm going to try and get it back on track, but was wondering whether to move to a one nap routine now (with DD we did this at 12mo and very gradually).

Is he too young to cope with one nap a day?

I think if he is demonstrating that he is fine with one nap a day, it is irrelevant what we think or what you might want him to have!

My dd1 had loads of long naps and I got lots of time to myself. My dd2 only has 30mins in the morning and 1-2 hours early afternoon(8 months old) and she is fine. Her older sister would have been really miserable with such little sleep.

It sounds like you (and I had a similar experience) may have had a 1st child who slept really well, and a second child who just doesn't need as much sleep. I kind of accept it more now.

Mine went to one nap when they were about 6 months old. I wanted to go out to M&T in the mornings so ds and dd jolly well stayed up until lunch time. I much preferred one long nap in the afternoon to two short ones, meant I could get more done (or more book read).

Yes, he can get through the day on one nap on nursery days but it can make bathtimes and bedtime a bit of a struggle (and not much fun) as he just wants to feed and get to bed.

These last few days on holiday he's had one nap, but only for 30-60mins and he's been very jerky and tired by bedtime so if i could be sure he'd sleep 2-3 hrs a day i'd definitely make the move.

Hi pula!
Dd can survive on one 20 minute nap in a day (when she is at nursery - normally a bit more than that but she does seem to have "I will not sleep" days!)- then catches up on her nap time when she is at home with me. Occasionaly she even needs a 5pm nap but only if we're out in the car at that time.
So each day is different! Her routine is a bit all over the place too - but I'm just trying to go with the flow....!

Hi Meep! Nice to hear from you!

Yes, it's hard when they are all over the place. With having DD to look after too, i'd rather have a fixed routine, as i have to think ahead to when she needs her meals cooking, and on fridays we have to collect her from nursery at 1pm. So it's hard to decide what would work best.

oh that is hard - I forgot about your dd - (sorry!) - if it's any consolation, even on the days when minimeep has her 1.5 hour morning nap then another one at lunch AND a wee 1/2 hour snooze in eth car at 5.30pm she is still very jerky and squealy in that "I am really tired but don't want to admit it" kind of way by bath time!

Hi - My DS (8 months old) is still taking 2 naps a day. Goes down at 9.30ish for anywhere up to 2 hours. Then does a very short nap at around 2.30/3 for 30 mins. I keep reading everywhere that they should be only napping once a day by 8 months and other mums seem surprised by what my LO does. But he sleeps happily from 7pm to 5.30 - then naps again til 6 to 6.30, so you know what? I say if it isnt broken, don't fix it.

It may be that the extra stimulation at nursery helps your DS to stay awake, then he just flakes after lunch. My DS did this one day over the weekend and it was when we had people over for lunch.

I think that when he is ready, he will stay awake til after his lunch. Nothing is worse than a grouchy tired bub.
