what % do you haev to et - i knwo ti varies evry year but what is a good one to eb aiming for

The exact figure (or even inexact approximation) depends on where you are and how much competition there is. I wouldn't aim for anything less than perfection wink but high 80s or 90s should be in with a chance.

and how much do you get for being summer birthdays

Variable, but somewhere between absolutely nothing and a few percentage points, I'd have thought.

I've got two years of this [aargh] - DS2 is in Year 5 and DS3 (with a summer birthday) in Year 4.

If you want a more definitive answer, you could try asking in your local area section of this forum.

Warning - that site has some terribly obsessed parents on it. Ones who want to know the precise score their child who got into the school of their choice achieved in the NVR, that sort of thing...

Depends on where you are as the different education authorities have their own marking systems. Here in Kent you have to get a minimum of 120 out of 140 in each of 3 papers. Not sure how they deal with a very bright year where most of the pupils get the requisite score.

Medway, on the other hand, being a separate unitary authority, has a completely different system.

The 11plus forum should come with a health warning though -- there are some major-league LOONS on there. Ker-azy. The N. London/ Herts people are seriously obsessive.

"To Guest0907 - In my case, I have been doing some work on Verbal Reasoning with Son 1 who is in year 5. But Son 2, who is aged 8 and in year 3 was feeling a bit left out, so I got him the Bond Verbal Reasoning book for Age 8-9. The questions are very similar to those I am doing with the elder one, but easier. I wouldn't have bothered if he hadn't expressed an interest, but he seems to quite enjoy doing them and it might help later. So I'd recommend that, if you did want to do something with your 8 year old."

i dont understand a word of it shock

Am having horrible sweaty flashbacks to when ds did 11 plus......

<<shudder>>

We had a massive bonfire of all the practice papers.

It is the non-verbal reasoning that I can't cope with. And the answers give NO explanation as to why the correct one is correct IYSWIM. I can do 90% of them, but the other 10% are so obscure - (or maybe I am just not clever enough).

Scores are pretty meaningless TBH - they just draw a line across the top scoring 100 candidates (or however many places there are) and the rest go on the waiting list.

Scores only come into it if the school in question has a 2 stage process where you have to get a minimum score in the reasoning papers before being allowed to sit the maths and english.

Plus all those squiggles and lines and dots make me go cross eyed and have a migraine.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Hallgerda on Tue 29-Apr-08 12:46:06
I'm sure NVR favours candidates from the planet Xarg where everyday subsistence depends on being able to negotiate one's way round black and white squiggles and draw the next one in the series.

they only do non verbal reasoning up here.
In ds1s intake year 75% got you through.

Q: "I have been blown away with the support and warm wishes we have received from so many Mum's and Dad's on this forum. Try and take some comfort from that in the coming days. It has helped me so much I can not even begin to tell you."

Presumably a tragic death within a family? News of a devastating and life threatening illness?

Nope. Kid didn't get into grammar school.

Sorry, had to post this- lifted directly from the 'Appeals' forum of that 11+ site. GET OVER YOURSELF, I shouted at it!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By QueenMeabhOfConnaught on Fri 02-May-08 14:24:27
Oh yes - they are all mad over there, aren't they? Endless posts about the finer points of different books and scores but the Appeals bit is the worst.
"Little Johnny only scored 95 on his Maths paper and the pass mark is 140 - should I appeal?". No you bloody shouldn't!

Daughter 2 took 11+. Failed to get into our local (and only) grammar school, that takes top 25%.

Took entrance exam to local very highly ranked academic private school, including non-verbal reasoning test. Scored the highest possible mark on NV reasoning (99%) placing her in top 1% of population. Had not been feeding her extra fish oil.

I now view 11+ with bilious disinterest, and swathes of mistrust.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By nametaken on Tue 13-May-08 12:56:11
It doesn't matter what marks you get. If a grammer school has 30 places available it will take the 30 highest scoring pupils.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Milliways on Tue 13-May-08 17:11:57
True Nametaken, my DD "failed" but got higher results at her Comp in GCSE's than anyone in the local Grammar (or other) schools

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]].
