oh right 3 is quite younger - I would be tempted to set a time limit yes and when the timer goes off - let him have a further five minutes (so set it for 15-20mins say) and if he's not that interested - take the food away.

He's three by the way. Can't usually start earlier as we are often just getting back from somewhere before dinner.

Has anyone used a timer or similar and said 'after this time, dinner is finished' and taken the plate away?!

Could you let him start earlier?

I think rather than try to speed him up I would be inclined to find a way of not minding that he's so slow.

DD drives me bananas eating slowly, fidgeting about on and off the chair ggrrrr!!

We eat dinner with her and after a reasonable time (say, half an hour for one course) we will leave the table, the room and shut the dining room door and she is not allowed to leave until she has finished, which feels a bit mean but it is the only was I can handle it without going mad at her.

It always gees her up.

Ds is quite a slow eater. No make that a very slow eater.

It gets very tiresome.

Anyone got any hints on how to speed him up a bit??? He is a good eater in terms of what he will have but just takes forever!

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
