He said that we can plant them (so obviously grow what I would think of as artichokes) but also that we can eat the bulbs. Anyone tried this? what the heck do I do with them?

They must be jeruslam artichokes (although it is the wrong season for them). They are yummy in stews. Jamie Oliver has great recipes for them.

They are delicious but the farting is genuinely unbelievable. Don't eat them and then go to a very ritzy fortieth birthday party, which is what I did. Fortunately the music was very loud ...

They are on my list of favourite vegetables. I peel them and put them in the water when I am broiling chicken - delicious - they are like a lighter version of a potatato.
