Got a letter through the post today about a parking ticket, that he conviently forgot to tell me about hmm and now it has gone from £40 to £80. angry

Pillock, can't afford to be spending £80 on a stupid parking ticket.

YANBU to be angry with him - I would! But would maybe 'pretend' that first notification had never arrived through the post. Good ploy is to send them the £40 straight away - if they cash it, they can't demand the higher amount

They stuck the ticket on his car, and he never said anything, this letter which came today said they had to go through DVLA to get the details, so for that they added another £40 on top.

I just rang him up and he said, oh yeah i forgot its in my car - idiot! and the day he got his ticket he went to buy "bits" for his boy toy (petrol RC car) so i just said, your car cost us aawful lot didn't it.

Just to check - is it a public or private parking ticket?

If it's from a private car park then you may not have to pay it at all (if it was on the public road then you do I'm afraid!)

It was on a retail park, free parking, but dh had parked in the staff part, which to be fair is right at the bottom of the car park and it is always empty.

You could claim the ticket wasn't on the car. This actually happened to us once. We got a letter but the ticket had never been on the car (parked outside a pub so probably drunken person had thought it funny to remove it, and we never knew). We sent them the standard £ fine with a letter explaining, they cashed it, and we never heard any more about it

oooh, may try that then, i thought that myself as it is quite a busy area, well it is the town centre so someone could have removed it grin

Write to them ASAP and ask for photographic evidence. Sometimes they can't prove it and back down - my dad always seems to get away with it! When I tried it, though, they sent me a charming photo of my car with the pay and display ticket clearly showing expired time. Worth a go though!

Tickets in public car parks (whether he was parked in staff parking or not) are a dodgy legal area and may not be enforceable. Do some googling and check out the consumer action group forums before you pay it (and ideally don't pay it at all! - I got one in a Sainsbury's car park a few weeks ago which I'm currently ignoring and so far they haven't even bothered chasing me for it).

PS it costs them about £2 to get your details from the DVLA so charging you £40 for it is ridiculous!

PPS (this is something close to my heart at the moment blush) if you're going to write, just say that you will be happy to pass their invoice on to the driver of the car as soon as they can furnish you with details of who was driving.

clicky

grin

I've calmed down marginally after the weekend when I discovered dh had neglected to pay not one but two tickets - total cost £300 angry.
