is it a uniform or what? I am about to have dc3 (and already have two under 5) and am working from home for 2 days a week now so no need for work clothes. How do I avoid going down the slippery slope to comfort and not caring (wails)

Cargo trousers? Are they sort of like combat trousers? Horribly 90s, I see your point.

You could not buy any cargo trousers, that might do it?

I work from home and normally wear nice fitted jeans.

Yes well I'm not going to buy them but what SHOULD I wear. Gok whathisface always dresses mothes up in heels and scarves but not v practical if you have three children (inc a baby and live in the countryside) even if they do look nice in the outfits

I just don't think 3/4 length trousers are very flattering on anyone except skinny women with long legs and small bottoms. The opposite of who wears them. She says hoping mojo is skinny grin

go on a focussed hunt for full length inexpensive soft linen trews in not rainbow colours (white beige black only -- plain no stripes or anything)

buy several pairs the same so you don't have to think about it in the morning

your life will be transformed

am quite evangelical about this

Thank you stuffitllama!

I agree with you re the purchasing of lots of pairs of linen trousers. I have a ridiculous amount of linen trousers (mostly full length) - they are so fab and easy to dress up or down.

I wear husband-esque polo shirts all the time.

I just don't prioritise looking smart. I do prioritise being comfortable.

Perhaps I'll make more of an effort once the kids start school (although the list of things that will be done when the kids start school is getting pretty long!).

I do cropped, but normally jeans, and I do have long slim legs so nyer wink

I don't do big baggy t-shirts though unless I am having a REALLY bad day (ie once every 4-6 months), and then it is days I am not planning on leaving the house much.

I am loving the top I swiped from Psycho at the beginning of the week though - wide v neck, sort of batwing cropped sleeves (I think that is what it would be classed as), but long and fitted down the bottom 80s job - it seems to flatter me lots grin

As a general rule I am vest tops - dull but me.

Oh and I wear flip flops 90% of the time - I got sick of full length jeans getting soggy on wet ground, so decided cropped with flip flops and I just dry my feet!

hmm

I made a comment to DH about how UK men have a summer uniform of cropped trousers and bright t-shirts (sometimes football shirts), scruffy trainers and cropped or shaved heads. Just as he as getting dressed - in cropped trousers, football shirt and trainers that an elephant seemed to have slept on. He wasn't impressed.

Maybe you have noted the female version.

I possess no cropped trousers and only wear baggy shirts for running sometimes. Mind you....I possess virtually no clothes at all(as I discovered when I tried to find some summer clothes to wear).

Cropped trousers are for people too mean to have normal trousers taken up properly.

Or for people like me who don't like their pants to trail in puddles and like to show off their boots.

I have got these ones though, so I reckon it's okay. www.dual.co.nz

DH looks really odd in cropped trousers - he has short stumpy legs compared to his body and he just looks like they are a bit small. He goes for long shorts if I can peel him out of jeans (he doesn't DO summer).

No football t-shirts either since he doesn't do football - generally pale blue or white ones.

don't get a crispy shiny one

Cropped trousers are far better than the alternative which is proper shorts with corn beef legs sticking out. And anything is better than jeans. I'm banning myself from them - i can neverget a good fit and they are such a cop out. Agree linen trousers the way to go. Loads about at the moment. Even primark have some cheap wear and chuck ones.

I'd go for a nice, properly fitting pair of jeans myself and dress top up or down depending on occasion. The fit is, IMHO, critical. If it's too hot then decent linen trousers - yes or a nice flippy knee length skirt and pretty top.

I haven't done cargo trousers for a long, long time. I luuuuurve clothes.

Slim-leg 3/4 cropped trousers with fitted t-shirts and good quality sweater/cardigan (I seem to wear extremes of either chunky knits or cashmere).

Linen often looks nice on other people (DH in a white linen shirt, v. sexy) but makes me look like I slept in the dogs basket.

I can spend an entire summer in shift dresses with flats or heels.

Baggy T-shirts or polo shirts are a complete non-starter and should be binned.

Three-quarter length trousers are fine if they are slim-fit and glamorous. They should never be remotely baggy or cut straight - they need to be close to the leg and end below the calf, where your leg slims towards your ankle. And they must, imperatively, be worn with glamorous shoes (ballet flats or gold leather flat sandals are fine) and a pretty top.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Anna8888 on Fri 16-May-08 11:56:56
I don't understand the linen trousers either.

They are always crumpled and faded.

Cod - you are very wrong about combats/army look etc - very low-key glam providing the rest of the outfit is feminine - and, crucially, they shouldn't be ironed grin

IMO bright colours have to be worn very judiciously, and in small touches... Bright green, bright blue and yellow should never, ever be worn. Scarlet, pink and orange are fine if the rest of the outfit is very low key...

you know you guys make me piss myself laughing.

so far we have;
no bright colours
no pastels
no linen
no 3/4 length trousers
no cargo trousers
no jersey...

and that is just on this thread.

the 'rules' are so extensive and seem to change on a daily basis.

if were to follow all these rules we would all end up walking around in burkhas for fear of breaking one of them, or showing off a stray bit of flab or god forbid a heel that wasn't adequately moisturised.

it is fascism!!!!

get real-99% of wome wear clothes that they lioke that they feel comfortable in.

if linen trews look wrong or mumsy it's because you have the wrong ones that don't fit you or because you're wearing them with the wrong stuff like large tshirts or collared shirts or polo shirts yuk

capri pants are alright if you do the audrey hepburn thing with them

I'm reeling in horror this week now that the sun has come out. Why do old French women (1) carry on wearing short skirt suits which went out of fashion in the early 1990s (2) take off their tights and carry on wearing same short skirt suits when the sun comes out, even though they are past their bare-leg sell by date?

EEEEEEEEEEEUGH shock

Cropped trousers do look odd on me as i'm 5ft 2 but they keep me cooler than regular trousers and I can go for a wee paddle in the sea or Loch Lomond.

I even wear my fake crocs with the band bit at the back, iykwim.
