found you.

Just met the doula - very nice but am concerned that she has never assisted at a birth before. She will have done one by June, but I think I need a calm, reassuring, experienced presence. Oh BuXXer.

Sophie, very annoying re mattress. Grrrrr.

Found you. Glad you found my ramblings helpful PP didn't mean to scare you about the ward it was fine, just felt a bit abandoned, maybe you always feel like that after having a baby but dh wasn't allowed on the ward after 9pm until 9am and 12 hours seems like a long time when you don't sleep!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PregnantPenguin on Tue 25-Mar-08 22:04:09
How annoying Sophie. Absolutely drives me mad waiting in all day for a 20 min delivery. At least you've got MN for company. grin The phrase 'Old Coach House' sounds great, very grand designs.

PP runs off to floss her teeth in case Ernest shouts at everyone again. Actually after the wisdom tooth incident, you wouldn't beleive my dental routine: floss, normal toothbrush, mini toothbrush at the back, tounge scraper (with special tounge cleaner spray) then industrial bleach like mouthwash. Takes about 2 hours every morning and night. blush

UpsideDown - Perhaps your Doula will be fresh and keen to impress? Do you get a discount as she's not qualified?

BasilB - TMI back at ya. After about a month DH and I have just discovered nookie again. blush Please don't tell me that it's not going to be possible for much longer (PP runs off to check which of us is due 1st). Ha ha, we're due within 48 hours of each other, I will check back in on Thursday. wink

Don't worry Katyjo - checked up St Georges (might as well name and shame) on this site www.babyfy.com, and I quote
"How long, if all goes well, is a parent allowed to stay in hospital post birth?"
"Average between 12-36 hours".
So if all goes to plan, I won't be there long anyway. Which after today, is a good thing...!!! hmm

I am such a chatterbox today blush. I'm back in the office tomorrow, so will be reading and not posting again, which will give everyone else a chance to get a word in. grin

Thanks PP for setting up the new thread - how do you find time for your dh when it takes you so long to do your teeth???

No pains here BB - maybe you were just in an awkward position blush or maybe baby was also pushing down!! I've felt like baby's scrabbling round down there, ds2 thinks it's excited and wants to come out.So maybe with you it was a combination of the 2.

Ernest - that's a long list, wish I was closer so we could waddle around together and pack for you.

Sophie - fingers crossed the mattress is there bright and early!! Have the annoying guests gone?

Upside down - at least you won't be her first!!

Boys are back at school tomorrow so I should be back in my early morning routine - OMG I'm going to have to set an alarm clock sad

N night everyone

Good morning everyone - and how are you all feeling, did you sleep well - one more day closer to meeting those lovely babies!!

I struggled with the alarm clock this morning, baby's kicking me like mad whilst I type, boys are eating breakfast then they're going out to clear snow before school - been snowing for over 24 hours now, an unexpected treat for skiiers at the end of the season.

Sophie - our large apartment was left in state last week as well, one child had scribbled all over the sheet with a black felt tip.

Just fallen over on the bloody snow on the way to school so dh has taken over and I'm going for a sit down, I landed on my bottom so there's plenty of cushioning there but I'm shook up nevertheless.

oh deb hope you're okay! if you're going to fall the bum is def the best place at least. i'm sure i mentioned before i fell over at 8 1/2 months with ds and broke my foot and now my deepest fear is that it'll happen again. i will be taking baby steps and being very cautious about uneven pavement... thank goodness i don't have to contend with the snow that you do!

upsidedown i think there's pros and cons to a new doula but if you're really after a voice of experience you might be best to find someone else. don't feel obligated because she's nice!

ernest i flossed my teeth yesterday for the first time in ages (am so lazy when it comes to flossing but do brush twice daily) and was relieved that my gums were bleeding profusely! have appt thurs but feeling kind of panicky because my gums have been 'fine' this time (i hope) and with ds they bled like mad. sad

sophie angry grr on your behalf. delivery people are so annoying. i've had that whole, you weren't in we left you a card and i'm like, i've been here all day surely you have my number for a reason??! i think they get behind schedule and just start to say that when they can't fit in anymore deliveries!!

i think maybe this little bean is having a growth spurt because i'm soooo tired. bed at 9.30 last night and my eyelids still weigh 5lbs each.

Morning all
Well hopefully they should make it today, we have describe to them what the farm looks like, big house, barns, sheep Oh and 3 signs outside with the name on, not a 50's council house, the lady who lives there phoned up last night very confused.

Deb - hope you are OK, I think that is definitelky the best place to fall. My DB and his family are going to Austria this weekend for a week and getting very excited about the snow reports.

hi everyone, at the risk of sounding repetitive - how much do we chat???? Taken ages to catch up just from yesterday.

Hope everyone well esp makecakes after hospital visit and deb after fall...

Went to my first NCT ante-natal class last night. Everyone seemed nice enough and picked up a few useful points (spare clothes for DH at hospital and you can insist that medical staff knock before coming into your room) and useful info about the hospital. Apparently our hospital is sooooo busy it is known for it to close its doors shock. So need to think about a plan b. The good thing is though I only live about 5 mins from hospital so if I am able to leave it very late before going they would have to let me in if I was just about to give birth.

I was also initially pleased that I was 'mid-range' on the bump front but then I realised my due date was the latest sad. Only 2 v slim people with super neat bumps though so didn't feel too much like a heffer grin. Couple of people looked like they had very well fitting jeans so will have to sit next to them next week and find out what they wearing!

Oh, refused to pick up any leaflets. Still in denial that I need to start thinking about birth etc.

ernest - sending tons and tons of sympathy! Moving countries is really hard and I think you're a star to be managing it this far pregnant with your kids!

and umm, I also ended up with a bit of a Gina Ford-ish schedule. It really fit DS and made him so much happier. But that bit she has about ironing baby sheets? I definitely didn't do that!

basilbrush - every once in a while I'm pretty sore after nookie, but we're still managing okay-ish. It's much more limited by my energy levels than anything else!

Opinions please - we've just been sent the booking forms for our NCT refresher classes and it's £70 for three two hour classes. Last time we really enjoyed the social aspect of the class, but £70 seems like a huge amount of money for just three (last time it was £80 for 6) and I'm not sure it's worth the money. What do people think? Has anyone gone to a refresher class before?

I start my pregnancy yoga class today too - I'm so excited. I went last time and it was really wonderful. The class is taught by a midwife who's also a yoga instructor and I always slept really well after it. It's also much cheaper than the NCT ones (£8 drop in for 2 hours) and I did meet other mums there...
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By bitofadramaqueen on Wed 26-Mar-08 08:59:30
envy at anyone still managing nookie. Went off it months ago (cant get past the feeling of there being 3 of us!!).

Aberdeen - why not wait till after your pregnancy yoga class to see how you get on with the mums there? £70 is very expensive for a refresher, but it could be a small price to pay if the social aspect proves to be a bit of a life saver! My classes were around £135 for 8 two-hour classes so your refresher class definitely works out at more per class.

bitofadramaqueen - I have to mail my cheque by tomorrow so not a ton of time to make up my mind We were planning on not taking them because DH was going to be offshore for one of the classes but now he's probably not (going offshore next week instead) so I feel like I need to make a decision all of a sudden!

Oh and nookie - at least right now it only feels like three! The first 6 months with DS we had him asleep in our room and we had to just throw a blanket over his cot (not sure why - it's not like he wasn't asleep) and be as quiet as possible. I'm not looking forward to that again!

Morning all - am absurdly chuffed that my throw away comment has made it as the thread title!

Does anyone else have painful muscles across the top of their bump? I know it's probably just the muscles stretching, but I'm in quite a lot of pain whilst sat at my desk at work...

morning all - love the name of the new thread.

Aberdeen - wrt yoga people vs NCT people, have found many more like minded souls at the first rather than the second. Am risking not doing an NCT refresher course and just concentrating on the yoga.

Ernest - good luck with packing and moving - get your boys to help you as much as possible.

And for all those falling over their feet / snow / uneven pavements, please be careful.

wishing you all a good morning - I'll pop in later
[MM slinks back to the grindstone and places nose against it rather unwillingly]

Aberdeen - have been doing aquanatal and have made a couple of good freinds from there and at £1 a week is a lot cheaper.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By aberdeenhiker on Wed 26-Mar-08 09:50:27
sophiewd - There's no aquanatal here in Aberdeen at hours I can make - yoga is from 4-6pm so it's easy to get to from work if DH does the nursery pick up.

Oh - and yoga includes a bit of cake and juice for the £8. Anytime I get cake, that's value for money!

mellymell - thanks for your comment! I made friends at both last time so probably would make friends at both again.

nettiehay - I get a sore spot when the LO stretches - but it's due to their position, so it sounds different. I've had shooting pains down through the centre of my pelvis - around my cervix when walking though. Has anyone else had those?

Found you... only managing to post occasionally, v busy at work, but enjoying keeping up with everyone's messages. I was 27 weeks yesterday, had a check-up at the lovely birth centre (where I hope to deliver) and all seems fine despite epic vomiting attack over the Easter weekend. Haven't been able to look at my choccy eggs yet shock. SPD/PGP is no worse, and physio has said there's not much more she can do for me, I just need to keep doing the exercises. Might venture back to pg yoga with caution.
Aberdeenhiker - my NCT classes (in rip-off London) are nearly £200, so it sounds like a bargain to me - though mine are first-time, so more hours I suppose. Came as a bit of a shock, but I thought it would be worth it for the active birth prep and social side. Hope I'm right, they're not until 34 weeks.
And I'm flossing like mad and have just made a dentists appt - thanks for the warning Ernest...

Morning lovely ladies - you are chatty!

Am in school today (even though it's holdiays - SHOCK!) trying to get organised for my last six weeks, if I make it to 38 weeks that is! I could just "wing it" but we have a new Head starting after the Easter Break and I bet he wants to observe me before I go on leave so no sitting down, lazy lesson for me sad (My stepmother actually suggesed I have a "sedentary" job...would she like to try and teach 25 fourteen year olds sat on her arse angry)

Glad some of you are still enjoying rampant lurve-making even if I'm not grin

The most enjoyable exercise I'm getting is an aquanatal class at Dundee. It's totally fab (you really feel like you've done something after your hour in there not like the one I did with DS which was bascially a 30 minute group hug) and BONUS, there's a free creche for DS while I'm in there

Cracked and opend my posh mamma mio gift a week early. Realised Baby Basil could well be here in 10 weeks time..aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh DH smothered me bump in yuppy anti stretch mark tummy rub, it felt soooo nice and skin definitely soft and lovely today, think this'll have to be nightly ritual

LOL ALERT the French for stretch marks is
"les marques disgracieuses" !!!!!

BB xx

Hey all, MW appt went well. When she felt my belly she thought Esther had turned head down but then the HB was high up so probably still breech. We had a really good chat about the birth - I really want a natural birth with little intervention but I know I am going to have to compromise on some things cos its twins.

MW is going to do my next antenatal appt at my house so she can help me write my birth plan. I feel very positive about the birth - had been feeling a little anxious cos thought they would make me have interventions I didn't want (epidural, continuous EFM) but as MW said "we are not ogres, whatever you want you can have and we don't advise any different just to annoy you". She said she had seen loads of twins deliveered without an ep and if I didn't want one I shouldn't have one. Still have to decide on that cos if Esther stays breech they'll have to turn her after Theo is born and that could be VERY painful!

Hi everyone taken ages to catch up....love the new thread name. 30 weeks today sooo excited.

Cant remember who said about soft tooth brush but its meant to be harder the better as where your gums bleed you brush harder as the bleeding is getting rid of infection. I was also given Ultra Floss by my dentist its in strips with normal floss at one end to start off then you pull straight through and its thicker at the other end and really removes any crap, but christ it stings.

Debs hope your bum is ok.

Makecakes/Gfairy congrats on the houses.

PP my god at the hospital cock up!

I have a poorly child just now horrible cough which keeps making her sick. DH is away up to his mums today as we have been told his Gran has only a few hours left, although she made it through the night. She is 95 and desprate to go herself instead of being poorly in a hospital bed. I have an issue and I know im being selfish but DH has been wanting her name as bumps middle name which Im not sure about mainly as DD has his other grans name as a middle. I know I wont be able to refuse now but I know it will bug alot of my family who will obviously think why are his family getting preference to names. I have previously brought this up with him but although he sees my point still thinks it should be her name.Gulp sorry bit of a ramble.

on Purely pregnancy, I grump sigh huff moan, i generally have to get on my hands and knees to pick something up nowblush I weighed myself blush and i also stupidly decided to measure round my bump PMSL humpty dumpty aint got a look in. My Hypnobirthing book arrived today and my chill out cd's so will get my nose into them today. Also got nursery wardrobe made yesterday and DH has halled out all DDs baby clothes for me to sort today so chocolate and tissues while I coo and aaah.

PS WARNING!!the certain lady that some of you are saying you followed is not aloud to be mentioned on this website as there was a bit of a hoo ha over certain threads.

aarh, so here you all are! Can't believe we needed another new thread already, we obviously chat too much!

Josey, I can totally emphasize with the name issue, families do get really upset about things like that. My dh's dad died when he was young and there was pressure to include his name in ds's but I refused on the principle that it is unfair to include one side and not the other, in the end we used dh's name which seemed fairer. Also, both his and my dad have really really bad names...

Hi everyone, I'm feeling OK, just a bit washed out this morning, dh has gone to pick up ds2 from Kindergarten as the snow is still thick. Trying to get ready for tomorrow, Mil, Sil and Bil coming to stay - can't wait as they are the most helpful, easy going, family guests.

BB - I used to like going into school to work for a day or so in the holidays - you can get so much more done without the children there can't you?I don't think you would be high on the list for your new Head to observe - they'll have loads to do settling in without observing someone just about to leave on ML. Hope the next 6 weeks go smoothly and good luck.

Nettie - I have painful muscles at the bottom of my bump.

Neenz - glad your appointment went well, hope Esther fancies a change of scenery soon.

Josey , hope poorly child is better soon and dh's gran drifts off peacefully in her sleep now she's ready. Re the names - just tell your family you'll use their names with the next 2 !!!!! grin

Sophie - got that mattress yet?

Must go and make beds, bye.

Found you! Just checking in on the new thread and catching up with the last few days news.

I hope the mattress has arrived Sophie, drives me MAD waiting in for folks that don't bother to turn up.

Debs, glad you're not suffering too much after your fall.

Glad the various midwife/doula appointments are going well.

Sorry, forgotten already who asked about bump pains, I am still getting soreness at the top right of my bump particularly if I'm tired. Tis a bit crap - achy pelvis if I walk/stand for long, achy bump if I sit for long. Am up and down from desk like a yo-yo...

I think GF has some good ideas - but maybe the routines are a little too strict to follow them by the book. I have her twin book and definitely intend to get the babies into the routine once I have BFing established. My sister said she didn't bother before 12 weeks but after that the routines were great and she had a very happy baby, never overtired or grouchy... but some people just prefer to go with the flow. I am more of a control freak!

Hi everyone - confused about who's not allowed to be mentioned and who is now??? Am I being a bit thick hmm?

Re: toothbrush - I missed it earlier, but definitely everything I've read has said soft toothbrushes while pregnant as its gentler on your gums?

Josey, I know it must be difficult while DHs gran is so sick but I'm completely with you on the whole name front; I dont think that you are being selfish at all. Me and DH have agreed not to use any family names as middle names, but might possibly use middle names that have some kind of connection to my family on the basis that the LO's surname is DH's family.

Hoggle - I get some discomfort at the top right of my bump too, just under my ribs!

DQ i can't remember who said it originally either but i have been told by hygenist mate and dentist that hard bristles contribute to receding gums and weaken enamel and you should never use them, especially during pregnancy. i did a quick google here's an example but every page i found suggested a soft toothbrush.

sophie i hope you get your mattress soon how frustrating for you!

my next task is to sort through ds' clothes and get the newborn things/muslins, etc. ready. think i'll have to procrastinate a bit though, after my furniture moving yesterday i'm not very mobile. sad

Sorry you're not feeling to mobile today DLM. I really wanted to start washing nappies and baby clothes at the weekend but ran out of time. Hoping that we will finally get the nursery completely sorted this weekend then I can sort out the baby stuff that's piling up around the place. I'd quite like to update my list of things to buy soon too. There's just not enough hours in the day though - how the hell will I cope when I have a baby taking up all my time grin.

I found Gina's book really useful but we certainly didn't follow it to the letter as we would have had no life!!! We started it at 4 weeks as my ds was feeding every 2 hours and I was exhausted. In hindsight the problem was that I was assuming he was hungry every time he cried when sometimes he was just tired. So by adopting the routine and putting him in his cot at certain times meant that he slept better and consequently fed better so we were all happy grin.

Sophie - you poor thing, how can they lose a mattress they had yesterday?????

Very envious of all you guys who have pregancy yoga classes to go to as there are none near me sad.

Have just been for another scan today (28 weeks) due to the amniotic banding we have. Little bub is doing fine and we managed not to look to see what flavour they are so feeling very proud of myself for that! Looks like all is well but the consultant did alarm me a bit when they said there is a danger of the baby getting caught in one of the bands as they are being born which could result in a section. But I'm sure that won't happen so I am just going to forget that she said that.

How exciting, a new thread!

Sophie - any news on the mattress, have they found it yet?

Josey - hope your child is feeling better and sorry to hear about your DH's gran.

Josie - glad your scan went well, hopefully the bands won't cause a problem, could be the worst case scenario she was referring to, doctors have a tendency to drop things like that in which just make you worry.

I had my colposcopy appointment this morning after the bleed I had weeks ago. It was reassuring in that she couldn't see any dodgy cells present and doesn't think there is anything to worry about as far as the rest of the pregnancy is concerned. It turns out that my cervix is ectropic, where the uterus lining grows out of the cervix and that part bleeds on contact, which is why it bled so much after sex. Apparently it is caused by the pregnancy hormones and is not too uncommon. I wanted to have a look at my cervix on the screen and it all looked a bit of a mess to me (DH bless him said it looked like a pretty flower, hmmm, not sure he knew what it was meant to look like!), there was quite a bit of blood where she had prodded it, then she started poking it with a big cotton bud to point things out which promptly caused me to have a funny turn and nearly pass out! Feeling a bit sore and fragile so DH brought me home. They want to see me again after the birth to double check there are no dodgy cells growing but I am feeling a lot more reassured about it all now.
We are also in the no nookie club, have been since the bleed but she confirmed that it wasn't a good idea!
Going to spend the rest of the afternoon taking it easy.

Mattress update - the original company are checking that they have another one in stock and will be sending it out tomorrow. I have just sent a reallt shitty and sarcastic email to Citylink as they obviously have Sat Nav for the visually impaired and I am still astounded by the fact that their driver cannot tell the difference between a 1950's council house and a farmhouse with as tone barn attached to it, a yard full of sheep and 2 signs on the road stating that we are Burngate Farm. Afternoon all. Just got the natal hypnotherapy programme cds in the post - only ordered them yesterday! Not sure if they're going to be a total waste of time - I'm v cynical! - but I'm thinking they're worth a go. If only for some extra lying down and chilling out time! I'm torn between trying to have a natural birth, or just asking for the epidural (followed by the hairdresser) at the first twinge....

I suggested the soft toothbrush - I changed mine a while ago, and it's made a huge difference - when I had to use a hard one again at the weekend (forgot to pack a soft one when I was away) my mouth was pouring with blood. Urgh! Also, one of my non-mum friends has 'overbrushed' with a hard brush and had to have a bit of repair work done. I've got a dentist appointment in a couple of weeks so will double check. And Ernest, I've been using my hummingbird flosser thing again since your post!

Josey, another friend waited until just after she'd given birth and then said in v pathetic voice to DH 'Oh, please can we call him xxxx?' and he didn't have the heart to say no to her at that point! I am saving that one myself!

Debs, hope it was just your pride that was hurt and your tush isn't too tender.

Afternoon all

I must try the soft toothbrush suggestion - my gums bleed like billyo every time I brush now (and I prefer hard brushes). But ernest I have been flossing!

Today I told work I'm starting my leave on May 2 instead of May 16 as I'm wilting fast - after Easter off you'd think I'd be refreshed, but I only did a half day yesterday and was ready for bed by half 8! So I'll be finishing at 34 weeks, which is MUCH BETTER and am chuffed.grin

Good luck with the mattress Sophie. DH gets a lot of stuff delivered at home (internet shopping fan) and we have no end of strife with couriers etc.

Finally made it to aquanatal class today, which was great, one hour in the pool then one hour relaxation/gentle excercise - felt fantastic! I also went to have my haircut, amazing how much I can fit in when grandparents have ds for a few hours. I will have to try ds in the creche for aquanatal next week.

Do any of your hospitals not run ante-natal refresher classes? I know the queen mums runs one every second thursday, unfortunately I'll be working so the only one I can go do will be on my due date, so I doubt I'll go unless they want a live demonstration! But they are free!

Local leisure centres are good for aqua natal in London - my local one does a course of 6 for £42 - not cheap I suppose, but I won't be doing them for long as they are at lunchtime, so I can't actually get there for it until I'm on maternity leave... and ours has a creche too (but you have to pay extra for that!)

I'm also envy at those who can go to aquanatal. There is a class near me, and two ante-natal yoga classes, but I can't make it to any of them. I'll have another go at negotiating with DH as the class is with my doula and it would be great to do her classes.

nettie - I get very sore at the top of my bump if I'm wearing trousers that cover it up - even if they fit, they seem to drag on it.

Feeling very unhealthy here reading all your posts while having a sneaky creme egg mini before tea blush. I hate water/swimming type things and yoga has never appealed to me. Because of the previous miscarriages I was petrified to do any exercise early on and not sure its wise to do anything strenuous at this stage (when I'm now so bloody unfit). I just keep telling myself it wont be too long before I can go marching round the park with the LO in the glorious sunshine hmm.

Neenz - re drawers, what kind of thing are you looking at? You may remember way back I was seriously considering some very cute but very expensive drawers but I've since gone for some plain white ones from Ikea (the malm ones). In the end, when I looked at various expensive drawers (John Lewis etc) the drawers themselves didn't seem any sturdier than the ones in places like Ikea. I figured that if the furniture was plain and simple I could focus on making the room look fab with decor, accessories etc.

Think I might start thinking about birth next week. Maybe. But only if we get the nursery done this weekend.

PP - thanks so much for linking to that article. After my NCT classes I did feel like a failure for having an epidural and while I know it's silly, I wish I could be prouder of how I did at DS's birth.

This time I'm hoping not to have the epidural so I can go home quicker, but that's the only reason and I wont feel bad if I need it at the time (I think it'll depend on how long hard labour takes - mine was not quick last time).

And Michel Odent sounds ridiculous to me - I wanted and needed my DH at the birth. He got me through it, not slowed things down! Sheila Kitzinger bothers me a bit too - with her assumption that all midwife-led births give the mother a sense of control more than consultant ones. We loved the OB who helped birthed my son, she really made me feel like I could do it, while we saw midwives earlier on who were very dismissive of how I felt. People are people, regardless of their titles. Some will be very good and some will be mediocre (and hopefully none will be bad). All people are different, all births are different, and no one solution will work for all of us. (end rant).

Morning all,

Bit of a nightmare morning here with the car not starting and being over an hour late for work - on a v. important day when lots of things are happening that I need to be here for!! Oh well - boss was very understanding.

I've had the very low down kicks too, it feels like bug is trying to kick his/her way out. Last night I think Bug decided to lay across me, instead of head up, and my belly got very tight on one side. DP was v. excited that we could tell it was a head. I told him I've been able to tell for ages, but it's the first time it's been really really obvious.

The stretching across the top of my belly feels muscular, so i think it could be just stretching, but i've noticed it happens more in the car (for some odd reason). Maybe it has something to do with my posture in those seats?

Good luck to all with aquanatal/mattresses/interviews/midwives/doulas etc... smile

Morning. PP - thanks for the link to that article. Am even more torn (perhaps not the best word, eh?) about what to do. I think I have a fairly high pain threshold, but I don't enjoy being in pain, so why should I have any pain whatsoever if I don't have to? I don't believe a painful experience will make me a better mum. But then, no one seems to be able to agree on the side effects of pain relief. Is it better to have a problems because of an epi (if there are any - don't jump on me, it seems there are, but new research says not) than risk post birth nightmares about how horrific it was?

Oh, if only we knew what would really happen to us an individuals if we took one course of action over another it would be so much easier! My head hurts!!!!!!

Anyway, I tried the natal hypno relaxation cd last night, and that woman's voice got right on my tits straight away! And the pan pipey type music. But I persevered. Maybe it has had some effect, there's a bit about eating the right foods, and I did turn down a scone and jam this morning when I got into work..... grin

Hope everyone is having a good day, and all going well with mattress, interview, shopping, etc etc.

I'm sure that if men had to give birth epidurals would be given routinely as soon as labour begins. Its just that we have been brain-washed into believing that we have to manage (and be in agony) to have a good birth - which is crap.

I had an epidural for my first birth after a hideous first 25 hours and it was fantastic. I offered to kiss the guy who put it in. And I don't feel at all that I failed in that labour, I needed that relief, and probably should have had it about 20 hours earlier. I didn't have one with the second but by the time I was fully dilated I really wanted it!

The problem I think is not whether you should have one, but whether you will be allowed one. My local hospital won't routinely give an epidural unless you are considered to 'need' it. Don't ask me how they decide, I really don't know...
