Hey I'll join you in the new thread ... so how many have we had to date, surely we must hold the record for most threads for an ante-natal month grin

The cupcake/fairy cakes sound scrummy and I may have to make some over the weekend (can't be bothered today ... now there's a surprise -LOL)

Hi everyone,

BR - I have a dry tickly cough too atm, hope it gets better. When you said RL I actually read it as Real Life.. shows I spend too much time chatting on the net really. Also.. 'if the baby doesn't come before Weds' ? Wow! 1/5ths engaged is the same as deeply engaged!!

Ellie - GRRRRRRR to that doctor!!! I'll give him a f%&!ing hunch by the time I am finished with him!!!!

That was going to be my next question! So 1/5 means very engaged, while 4/5 means not so engaged? Is that rite?

oh - lucky you Mum2b2BabyRoo getting to spend four days with DH. My DH is working on Friday (which is good as the money is needed at the moment due to us wanting to upgrade our wheels) - but the rest of the weekend he is around ... saying that friends are coming over on Saturday for a 'Footie extravaganza'(DH's words - not mine hmm) so he'll be LOL-ing with man-pal all evening whilst I try not to be boring and head off to bed to early! And one DSS is coming over which is great as he is superb with DD, therefore giving me a break!

Oh and the other plus side - a GREAT excuse to eat copious amounts of choccie!! yipski

Hey Ladies, someone, I think it was BR asked how the telly thing went, well, basically, I went to meet up with 4 MNers and we did lunch whilst being filmed and talking about MN/baby stuff.
Afraid to say it was mainly me talking (big gob) blush

Then the tv crew came round my house and I had to answer loads of questions in front of the 'puter whilst DS was jumping all over me!grin

Took about 2 hours for the interview and obvs they'll edit it down to what they want. I think I talked constantly about VBACs and breastfeeding though blush I wasn't very nice about Health Visitors either hmm

What a bloody night I had last night, ctx ALL night, started at about 9pm and I was leaning over my birthing ball, they werent really painful, more uncomfortable but when I went to bed they kept waking me up, was determined to get some sleep though, I was not going to be going anywhere without a few hours kip as I was shattered! Seem to have stopped now though so feck knows what it was, obviously not labour.

I like VS's better. I seem to having big spikey pains at the bottom of my tummy on and off. This better not be labour.
>.<

What do people describe contractions as feeling like?
I heard you can get them at the base of your belly or at the top, or at the sides... OR all over?
Is that true?

1/5 engaged - start line or finish line???

Contractions - what do they feel like??? (and I have never had any period pains so no idea what they feel like! sorry blush)

BR - this is from a while back now but I had lots of movements from DD1 when I was in labour. It was a funny one because I was already dilating and having contractions then they broke my waters and put me on a drip to induce me. Before they broke my waters I was having 3 contractions every 10 minutes (although I couldn't feel them at that stage) and she was certainly wriggling. Maybe not as much as normal though.

It's hard to describe, mine are like the braxton hicks but with backache similar to period pains, my whole stomach doesnt hurt, just parts of it, and different parts each time, like sharp pains, last night they were mainly quite low.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By PortAndLemon on Thu 20-Mar-08 12:03:13
Just to complicate matters, you can also get contractions in your back if you are in the early stages of back labour.

Oh ok - all last night i was getting like an 'ache' at the bottom of my stomach and lower back ache but it just kinda kept coming and going. Didnt think anything of it as I'm only just over 35 weeks.

How to describe a period pain.. its like a burning 'grainy' horrible hurty pain down there and around your lower belly I guess.

My back is killing me now VS and have had another bout of spikey pains. Cant be labour though. Am determined its just body revving up. Will tell you all if they continue.

When they say 4/5th it means the midwife can feel 4/5th of the babys head, So 1/5th means it is far engaged.

I looked it up the other day!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By VictorianPASqualor on Thu 20-Mar-08 12:10:07
It would be totally normal for every single one of us to have ctx and not actually go into labour before our due dates as you can have 'false labour' for a good few weeks before it actually kicks in. When they get close together, that's when you need to think about calling someone.
Mine so far haven't been any closer than about every 15 minutes and have mainly been further apart.

Also I am glad to know I can experience contractions in the run up and not actually be in labour. Has put my mind at rest. I dont want to cry wolf, but I cant ignore stuff like that either.

I guess its hard being a first timer sometimes.

I had had some more spikey pains with back ache and BH movements, but nothing regular.

HUGS for helping me. Thank you all.

Hi,

Well I'm still having irregular contraction(ish) pains so I have no idea what is going on!?!?! It's too uncomfortable to sleep through but not bad enough to call MW. Seams to be worse the more I relax. Also have an upset stomach and starting to get a bit emotional about the whole thing/lack of sleep at the mo

With the 1/5th thing - it depends on the wording they used...if it was 1/5th palpable them that means that they can only feel 1/5th of the baby's head which effectively is fully engaged, if they said it was 1/5th engaged I would have thought this would mean that they would feel 4/5th which means it's just starting.

Anyway I am off to bed now - hope all you ladies enjoy your last days.

V.

On your maternity notes look to the bit that says 'REL to BRIM' if its 1/5ths there you are deeply engaged.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Mum2b2BabyRoo on Thu 20-Mar-08 12:55:11
Whata cool site VS - thanks for that!

Well I am 4/5ths engaged and I ind of knew that it didn't really mean anything, but good to know what it really means!

No contractions from me, but I do have a torn muscle keeping me awake with the rest of you! It is so painful - just under my left breast and is a lump that hot and sore. So as you can imagine - lying on my side is agonising - well actually right now any position is sore!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By northeastmummy on Thu 20-Mar-08 13:24:27
Thanks for the timer VS - I've bookmarked it! With all of these aches and pains coming on, I'm SURE there's going to be some babies coming soon wink

I sometimes wonder if everyone feels the same thing for contractions and/or period pain?

Anyway, I would describe it being a bit like cramp, but not as sharp. You know that feeling of the muscle tightening that you get just before the cramp comes on? I think early labour feels a bit like that - very bearable. Then when they get more intense, it's like having the full on cramp, your tummy tenses and pulls then after a time it subsides to absolutely nothing.

I suppose in a way that's exactly what your uterus is doing. Tensing and pulling to widen the cervix to let the baby out.

It's a very positive pain though and there are good things at the end of it. Not like toothache which is a nasty negative pain.

sad Mum has been called to Wales(nan lives there) sad something really wrong, pancreas, talk of very very soon.

DH has said if anything happens he won't go away/will come home.

I hate the thought that if something does happen i cannot go to Wales, for a good 6 weeks at least.

Ah, Scorpio, poor you. Have you been able to chat to her on the phone? Could you get someone to set up a webcam so you could have some face-to-face conversations? I don't know how but I think it's relatively simple.

VS and others feeling crap, hope you feel better/have your babies soon! I can't believe how close we are getting now. My SPD seemed better over the past couple of days, I was all cocky about my labour pain-relief hormones kicking in, but today it is AGONY. Still, off to the orthotics dept in a bit to get my proper belt (FINALLY) so with any luck that will help.

Was supposed to carry on the house-sorting my bro and I started on Tues today, but went back to bed at 10am and woke up at 1.30! The pain was so bad I just couldn't face getting up so I willed myself back to sleep instead. Bit blush as now house is in that looks-messier-before-it-looks-better stage and we're coming up to the four day weekend.

I can't sit/lie any way without getting pins and needles now! I wonder if that's something to do with being absurdly heavy?!

Fear not scampmum, I'm here!

Scorpio {{{{{hugs}}}}}}, thinking of you

Everyone with coughs, colds, dodgy tummies and contractions - {{hugs}} too

I've been getting quite a few period pains, which freaked me out at first, but now that I know that a) nothing happens when I get them and b) they are probably just the baby engaging a bit more (uterus has to contract to push baby down), I can cope a bit better. Having said that, I find them painful enough to need to take paracetamol to get through them. Hot bath helps too. Oh, and I have one of those microwavable lavender heat bag things, which is really nice on my back when they're bad (I don't put it on my tummy as I'm worried about overheating the baby!!!)

I've just got back from lunch with friends at the Cheesecake Shop - fridge now has triple choc cheesecake in

And am waiting in all afternoon for new beds to be delivered from John Lewis. Quite glad to have excuse to have to stay in - no energy today, don't want to go shopping (but need to).

Did buy sling material today - quite tricky trying it on when quite so pregnant! Will have to tie DH up when he gets home! wink

Happy "last-day-at-work" for those ladies finishing today

Wow, you lot can talk!

Very jealous of people who are engaged already, I'm due in 2 and a half weeks and baby not at all engaged yet. I went out and bought a birthing ball today (have finally started mat leave!) so will try having a bounce on that later.

Piccalilli2 _ I'm due in 2 weeks and baby still not engaged. MW told me to do some 'swaying-type moves' to try and get baby into position and I have been sitting on a birthing ball for weeks (and am going to lean over it more too). I have started taking RL tablets today - so hopefully that may help.

((hugs)) to Scorpio re your Nan and to VS (and others feeling unwell). I felt like utter merde on Sunday and was crying at the drop of a hat, but have felt ok for the rest of the week.

right - lets start some <<engaging vibes>>

Hi everyone, don't post very often but lurk in the background following everyone elses. Am now 34+5 weeks and have already had enough. Had to finish work last week earlier than planned due to carpal tunnel syndrome, which keeps me awake half the night in between getting up for 4 wees a night!! It was a relief to finish but now feel really down in the dumps about this time stretching out in front of me before this baby comes. Unfortunately not getting any nesting urges - my house could do with some!!!
Sorry it seems like I only post on here when I have something to winge about!!

Great news Ellie, must be such a relief!

Hope all you last-day-at work ladies had a good day!

Masked: I wouldn't worry about measuring 36cm's if you're almost 38. My doc said there is a 10% leeway on that.

Mum2b: thanks for the cup cake recipe- can't wait to try them.

The online timer says "When your contractions are about 20 minutes apart and are staying even if you walk around or lay on your left side, you are in labor! This is the time to get to the hospital". I've been told to call when I am getting 2 contractions every 10 mins that last for more than 40 seconds... hmm

by the way, girls, DD never engaged at all and I had a pretty quick labour (well, first stage anyway) so never fear! I also thought that it was quite unlikely for second and beyond babies to engage at all?

Have to tidy up as we have babysitters tonight (we're going Out For Dinner - figure it's our last few weeks of any opportunity to do that...). Need to pick up DD in about 20 mins so best get cracking!

Orthotic appointment was good, took about five mins and belt seems pretty helpful. Trying not to be narked that it's taken four months to get the appointment...

CONGRATULATIONS to all those who finished work today!

Oh PFJ, just saw your post. Am so sorry your Mum can't come, you were really looking forward to her coming. Wasn't she going to be at the birth?

tell your DP to cop on, he's not the one carrying around a baby for 9 months and he doesn't have to go through the pain you are feeling. If all he has to do is put up with a little whinging from you then he should consider himself lucky!!!

So sit back, chill out, try to forget all that and most importantly have a mini-egg

Apparently I kept him up most of the night moving about and crying out when it hurt, I was asleep so I don't know. His back really hurts as well he says. But he only mentioned that now, rather than earlier today. I told him to take some pain pills but I think he's just saying that as an excuse to be irritable. Plus I gave him a lie in for an extra 4 hours after I got up because I knew he didn't sleep well..
I dont know why he's being so negative and irritable all of a sudden.
I told him earlier I had some more serious contractions, and he just got angry.
I suppose it could be fear, but its really just upsetting me.

I think I'll just hide up here for a bit longer and eat biscuits. I am so hungry.

Typical womenly thinking I suppose haha. Not very progressive is it?

PFJ, just tell him to piss off and get over himself.
FGS so what if his back aches, he isn't carrying another human being inside him, and if he carries on whinging throw a couple of kilo bag of spuds on his lap and ask him to try doing anything let alone sleep in that condition.
