Good luck MB! Here's hoping labour beats induction to the post.

Possible sweep option tomorrow if MW exams and thinks it's a go. Hope it's favourable - had some bone fide Cramping with a capital "C" wake me up last night and thought "woo hoo!" only for it to disappear in the morning. Reflex this afternoon and hope DH will indulge in three minutes in paradise tonight. wink Seemed to work last night, anyway!

HQ so very sorry about your DH's nan. My Grandma is 97 and even at that age I know I will be devastated when she goes. I hope that the universe gets the message and she and your LO meet in person, or at the very least in spirit. Take care of yourself.

MOBTK really sorry about your extension being rejected, its a real PITA for you and I know how much you had your heart set on it. Can't believe they are saying you would need to go to Poole with a BP of 120/? but still not really high compared to your normal hmm angry for you. Sending lots of relaxation vibes and lemon meringue pie grin

Come on MB crack on with delivery and put us out of our misery grin we have waited long enough!!

Good luck to all booked for induction and the sooty and sweep shows. I am having a couple of BH at last grin

Hello all

Just to let all the March mums and mums to be know - Arielle Dinah born 6am Thursday 6th March!

Exqisitely painful back to back labouring till 5cm dilated (12 hours), then epidural. If I wasn't already married, I'd have proposed to the anaesthetist there and then. Dr Finn at the Whittington - I love you! After that, no pain, a couple hours of sleep, then woken up to be told to push as baby's heart rate was going down with each contraction. 20 mins of pushing and she was out. 6lbs 14 oz of joy.

Since then home, jaundice, back to hospital over weekend under uv lights, she cracked the breastfeeding thing like pro once jaundice sorted, home again and adjusting to life as parents.

She's sleeping in my arms snuffling away while I'm typing this. Just hoping she'll get the hang of sleeping during the night as well as during the day sometime. She's the most beautiful creature I've ever seen.

well i am still here 12days overdue, have had a bit of a show but not much in the way of contractions the plan is still to go to hospital on fri, have ctg, a scan etc and chat over options, i know i can go over 14day but tbh i am not sure if i have the patience, esp when i have the other three to look after.....

3madboys - I know how you feel and I don't even have any other children! I am just sick of being pregnant, the worry that something might go wrong etc. Friday seems to be a busy day all round as I think quite a few of us have hosp appointments for induction.

Trust your instincts. Lots of people say induction is easier for subsequent babies so you may only need some gel to kick you off. Good luck whatever you decide to do!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By 3madboys on Wed 12-Mar-08 14:15:25
i wont be having the gel missingmyheels as i am allergic to it. they will break my waters to get me going which is what they did with ds2 and ds3, it worked both times, but i really wanted a home birth and obviously if they break my waters and i dont go into labour then i will need syntocin and there is the risk of cord prolapse, intervention, c section etc... i am trying to stay positive and remind myself that i worked fine previously and i am already 2cm dilated and 'very favourable' but i cant help but worry hmm

congratulations MB, fabulous news and what a fantastic size - well done you....
and M27 - congratulations to you too....
such happy news - brilliant.

Have just had second sweep, booked in for induction on saturday but have every intention of things kicking off before that...have tried explaining to the baby that better for both of us if it happens naturally but not sure its listening - according to scans and monitors its quite happy.

Good luck to all still waiting and those approaching due dates. If I can offer any advice to anyone due later in the month - assume your date to be wrong...it makes a lot of difference if you don't hold on to the due date as any sort of d day I think. it's made my waiting a lot easier than some.

HQ - so sorry to read of your news - gutting. I hope you both find the strength at this time and I am quite sure she'll be keeping a very close eye on you when she has passed away - in fact your baby and her will always have a special 'circle of life' bond even though they may never meet...won't help now but I do hope you will be ok.
take care of yourself.

Well, MW gave me a sweep today. Head is down and engaged but still only about 2/5. Said cervix is in good anterior position, still a bit long, but softening and she could open it to about 1cm. Said breaking waters (should we get that far) should be easy.

Am now booked for induction at 41+6 which is a week today. Sounds like I can ask for an exam and another sweep at that stage if I don't want to be induced. I'm sure I will be advised to go ahead, but good to know I have options. Gah, here's hoping I don't get that far!

Now it's just a waiting game.

Good luck to all with inductions, etc. Sweep wasn't bad, BTW, just like a smear test.

And congrats to M27!

hi all, feeling every bit of frustration for those waiting for appointments and inductions. I am now 16 days over (12 by hospital dates)am due to go for induction tomorrow...hoping and praying that all i might need is some gel to get me going...feeling really teary, sorry for myself and pissed off. Mad and angry that my body wont do as its supposed to and quite deflated that after all these weeks of waiting for it to 'kick' off, that i wont experience spontaneous labor....i am a bundle of laughs huh!

3madboys, you sound positive in your outlook, so am going to try and take some inspiration from you, hope it all goes well for you!

Missingmyheels - very good luck for your induction tomorrow, enjoy your night out tonight! Maybe have a glass of wine!

M27 congratulation on your new baby girl...bummer about the back to back laboring. I think thats how this LO is lying, i have chronic back ache all the time, wondered if this has contributed to me not progressing any...does back to back , always result in an epidural? does anyone know??

Thanks caz for your thoughts, this little bugger is a stubborn one!

right off to prepare for tomorrow, will post later xx

oh jaysthird, it sucks doesnt it, this will be the 4th time i have had to be induced, i waited till i was 17days over with ds3 and still ended up going in and getting my waters broken, it did work tho and i had a quick three hour labour.

if baby is back to back it may be a factor in why you are taking longer to go into labour, try spending lots of time on all fours etc that will help little on turn around.

and back to back doesnt always mean an epidural, ds2 was back to back, i had a 7hour labour, i spent lots of time on my knees and all fours, mainly in the bath with copious amounts of gas and air, but he turned just before he was born in the end, i have to say, feeling him turn when in labour was NOT NICE, but he did then come out ok

good luck for tomorrow jay, and i really think being positive will help, i am trying to imagine baby pressing on my cervix and it opening nicely etc, very sad i know but hey it cant hurt
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By tori32 on Wed 12-Mar-08 15:39:34
Hi jaysthird it depends on lots of things with back to back. In itself it isn't a problem, only if the head is deflexed i.e. neck streched and arched back as this presents the widest part of the skull first. Also if you have a large baby anyway this makes the position worse.

Try not to slouch on the settee at all (difficult I know)
Try the inversion technique if the baby has engaged OP to get it out of the pelvic rim so he/she can turn.

Sleep on your side, not on your back.
Spend lots of time on all fours, scrubbing floors is good.

Mine engaged back to back a few weeks ago but when I went for the scan last friday it had got into the correct position doing the above. HTH x

congrats to MB & M27! What a whopper MB....

Had to spend all night at the hospital. Complete hell. Well, no, complete hell would have been the life of the other 2 girls on the ward with me, one speaking no english who freaked out at a VE and was screaming away, the other had been in since Friday for induction.
So didn't get anywhere near trying to sleep until 2am due to baby monitoring in next cubicle at full volume, overhead lights on, then woke up crampy at 5 and couldn't get back to sleep.
Got overlooked by consultants due to confusion over who should see me, so wasn't followed up on until 2ish when i burst into tears on a midwife and said i wanted to go home. Bless her, she was lovely and gave me a comforting hug...and finally seen by jr consultant, who couldn't make a decision on letting me go home, so had to wait another hour for senior consultant.
Overall agreement is that BP isn't partic high if it's around 90, but the 110 was more worrying. Have agreed that i get a bp check at home tomorrow, then back to assessment unit for ctg on friday, and if nothing happening before then, get admitted sat evening to start induction on sunday.

However, managed to get a sweep today at 4th attempt, am 2cms but still posterior (ooer) and feck did it hurt, wasn't expecting it!

Am now confused as they said to expect cramping tonight, but don't know if i'm supposed to be able to distinguish between that and contractions. Presumably the contractions won't go away with paracetemol They think the baby looks a good size...am now concerned following MB's size revelation! However, also got told i had a good sized pelvis. Have known that for many years wink

Hoping for action tonight as it's DH's birthday tomorrow, he's happy to share with LO though don't think LO will be so happy in future grin

MB and M27 - congratulations! Lovely names and great (if painful) birth stories from both of you.

Good luck to MMH, Jaysthird, Fn41, and to all those overdue!

Thank you all for your kind thoughts this past couple of days. DH's nan passed away on Tuesday evening before we got there - in the end it was so much quicker than even the doctors could predict. We're all really sad but after a very sad and sombre Tuesday night had a better day yesterday. She was 95, and we knew she was on a downward spiral, but she got to live largely independently until she got hospitalised for the final time, she was still playing dominoes and eating trifle and hot cross buns on Monday (she had the most legendary sweet tooth!) and she passed away peacefully. You can't really ask for more. And for DH I think it will be better in the long run that his last memory of her is eating cake at her 95th birthday party (sweet tooth again!) rather than being in a hospital bed. Just so sad she doesn't get to meet our baby, but at least it gives the family something wonderful to look forward to.

My only problem now is that because of Easter the funeral is likely to be the week I'm due. So I either need this baby to arrive early or be late as I don't want DH to miss the funeral if at all possible. Anyone got any surefire tips on getting a baby out of your tummy within a week or getting one to stay in for 3?

HQ xx

Midwife gave me a 'worksheet' of natural ways to encourage labour, i was reading it last night and apparently sex is only effective if mutually satisfying, as the sperm is required fior the hormone and it is only if the women is satisfied the cervix will move in some way to absorb it.....hmmmm...definately not worth the effort then! At this stage im feel and appear about as sexy as a beached whale!

Will stick to the raspberry leaf tea instead. Feel i should really go for a long walk but am too tired, i think part of me is waiting for my dad to return from abroad for a business trip. I want the baby on monday i think, but then i was in latent stage labour for four days last time so maybe i need some tingling now!

Oh and according to same sheet it is only established labour once tummy changes shape with each contraction, dont remember that happening before so will watch my stomach with great interest this time!

Right. Nursery is finished! Woo hoo! So, I figure that mental block is gone and LO can now happily arrive.

Really really want to avoid induction next week, so sending baby lots of "we want to meet you" and "come see your new posh room" messages. smile

HQ so sorry about DH's nan. It is so very sad for you right now, but I would agree there is comfort in knowing she died peacefully and was very independent up to the end. I hope that LO arrives at convenient time for you. Not that they appear to listen to us!

Hi all,

Wondering if I can join this thread. I'm now 40 + 4 days with DC2.
DS1 was 12 days overdue and the day before his induction date I went for a last-attempt session of reflexology, had a strong thai curry, and then finally an ounce of castor oil washed down with a tall glass of lemonade.

One of those things did the trick cause I went into labour around midnight with strong contractions, and 6 hours later DS1 was born in the birthing pool at the hospital.

I'm finding I'm much more impatient with DC2 - and not wanting to go that long overdue, but not wanting to get induced either...

Anyway, thought I'd introduce myself and say Hello and Congrats to the lucky two who now have their little ones with them.

Bloody NHS are USELESS! They don't have a bed for me until tonight. So I have to go in at 8pm, DP has to go at 8:30pm and then they will begin to induce me but now they don't have time to give me x2 lots of gel before attempting ARM. This is all going wrong wrong wrong, why oh why didn't I just bite the bullet and pay for the Portland?? sad

Hi girls,
MMH- sorry to hear things aren't going as smoothly as you hoped- but you may find one lot of gel is enough- or maybe ARM may do the trick as well. Hope it all goes smoothly tonight!
HQ- so sorry to hear about DH's nan. My great-grandmother passed away in January and we were so sad that she didn't get to meet our LO, but you're right that his arrival does give the family something happy to look forward to.
As for tips on keeping baby in- stick closely to this thread!! Seems to work for most of us so far
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By JFly on Thu 13-Mar-08 11:36:25
Argh, MMH. I can't understand their scheduling of gels and ARM. Can you delay until tomorrow morning? Why would they make DH leave right after induction? If you do go in tonight, could you insist on him staying for duration?

Don't let them tell you they don't "have time" - have confidence in yourself and tell them what you want. Induction is elective, so you run the show! <<end unsolicited pep talk>>

littleducks - my belly changes shape when i have want strong bhs, it goes pointy!

missing - sorry to here that there messing you about, can you not go in tomorrow instead? hope everything goes well for later

HQ- sorry to hear about dhs nan, have no tips to make baby come out/stayin but generally if you really them to come out they dont! bit of reverse psychology grin

just made some scones so now scoffing them with strawberry jam and whipped cream, yum grin at least whilst im still pregnant i dont even need to think about starting a diet.

I'm thinking a bit more clearly now I have stopped sobbing. I'm going to call them when DP gets home from work and tell them that I won't be coming in unless he can stay with me for at least the initial induction stage. It's bloody scary - I don't want to be all by myself! They would make him leave because they induce you on the antenatal ward and visiting hours end at 8:30pm so he would have to go home then, he could come back when I am in established labour and therefore moved to the delivery ward. No exceptions - apparently.

They didn't want to postpone it because then it'll run into the weekend when they have less staff on so don't like to do anything "elective". They were very apologetic and I feel a bit bad as I know they are just understaffed and underfunded and they probably don't need me crying like a baby down the phone!

<<goes off to be a big strong girl and talk things over sensibly with the midwives>>

Hope Jays is having more luck than I am - she might even have her bubba by now! Exciting stuff!

From phone. Mmh! Would not go in tonight honest. You will spend night awake before labour is too much! ...also arm should not be 1st iol activity. You are not there to make nice for them. Do please ask for am tomorrow. Sorry if sound militant. Feel it for you. Much power to you. See NICE 2008 draft guide to iol if you have time x x x

Oh and welcome MarchMama!

HQ - So sorry to hear about your DH's Nan, as for tips to get them to stay in I definitely suggest hanging around here! You would be very unlucky if the baby decided to make an appearance at the time of or just before the funeral, I hope it all goes ok for you both.

Congratulations MB (and oww!) and M27 and anyone else I've missed.
Sorry to hear your news HQ, how nice that you had a happy last memory though , I'm sure that will be a comfort as time goes on.
MMH - good luck, can you insist on dp staying? It does seem a bit tough to make him leave you sad. Perhaps you'd better take a laptop! But maybe this time tomorrow you'll have a baby and you won't care about anything else!
Emily is doing well and getting used to being out in the world. I had my first visit from the health visitor yesterday and she had 2 startling pieces of information:
1) when bf you should eat 3000 calories a day! I don't have a massive appetite and that will be a pretty much full time job. It's the equivalent of more than 6 packets of pringles!
2) babies learn all language by the time they are 3 and lots by the time they are one so it is important to stop swearing now. Oh S**T!
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By MissingMyHeels on Thu 13-Mar-08 13:05:03
shock 3000 calories???!!! shock

Wow! I was looking forward to going on a diet!

Emily is such a pretty name, it's on our short list but I'll feel like such a copycat if I use it now, hehe I am going to try and ask for DP to stay a while, fingers crossed.

mmh-if they won't let dh stay be thankfu; its at bthe beggining - sorry bout typos- millie feeding!!

when they give you the gel its not the most dignified thing ever tbh- and yoku have to stay put for a while to stop gravity taking its toll and will have ctg monitoring- i found having dh there annoying- he was wandering aroiund like a lost sheep!

but ask! also will they be giving you gel overnight? usually they start ezrly in the morn- less staff at night!

JFly - thanks for the cervix wishes I too am hoping for a quick change in circumstances.

I've been rotten sick for over a week with an upper respiratory virus and a cough so bad it made me vomit once shock so I sort of passed my due date in no fit state to go into labour. Didn't stop me being cranky and impatient though ;)

jaysthird good luck and hope your induction is going well, or has gone well and you're now holding a lovely baby.

Anyone else getting super broody? Every time I see a little baby I just want run off with it (not really, but ykwim). I guess I just can't wait to me my LO.

3mb - I'm trying to use your patience as an inspiration. You seem so unflappable in this whole waiting game.

MMH - you poor thing having psyched yourself up for the induction. I'm quite at the idea that your DP would have to leave at 8.30! WTF? I'm to go in next week at 4pm and afaik the induction will take place over the evening. I've always been assuming that DH will be there. I would hate, HATE it if they made him leave.

Best, best of luck whatever you decide. Soon you'll have your lovely baby and you'll barely remember the rest of us still in the waiting room ;)

spugs @ pointy BH tummy. I STILL have no BH and I'm 5 days overdue. sometimes I get really mild cramping but that's it. I swear this baby is just not getting the message that it's time to come into the world.

HQ so sorry about your DH's nan. She sounds a formidable woman and so lovely that she was able to enjoy hot cross buns on Monday

littleducks sex might make my cervix move? Right, I'd really better get my act together then. I have the intention to do it, but I never seem to quite feel like it.

welcome marchmama

LMAO @ "piggyp* 3000 = 6 packets of pringles. I wonder what it is in cornettos?

Doh! forgot that the shock and grin smileys work weirdly on this site. Obviously I didn't think it was at all funny that MMH's DP would have to leave at 8.30. I meant shockblush

All other grins stand.

Hope all is going ok for Jay?

HQ, sorry to hear that your dh's nan passed away. As you said at least the last memory you have of her is a happy one.

Think things may be starting to happen here. I have had a little bit of a show for the past couple of hours. I also feel like I need the toilet more often than not. I'm getting excited now as I'm 40+6 today, and I just want to meet the little fella. I am booked in for a sweep tomorrow and I take it that they will still do it? I suppose my cervix will be more favourable though.

From phone for c4it. Was told to expect about 9lb 8. Uch cons was not phased by my plan at that size. Had very careful prep with ind midwife. Literally practised the moves needed in one visit. These worked. More later. Feed time

MMH - Be strong! It is NOT your problem that they don't have many staff on at the weekend. If you don't want to go in until tomorrow morning then don't! I get really cross when the NHS says that they won't put your best interests first (in this case ensuring you are as relaxed and comfortable as possible) because it doesn't suit them! As for having your DH there - I would absolutely want mine to be there too so I think you need to stick to your guns! Good luck!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By marchmama on Thu 13-Mar-08 16:27:31
Thanks MMH - I agree with the others - I would want DH there as well - and who's to say that the induction won't work right away or that it will need to go into the weekend? Be strong. (although I know that's easier said than done)
Good Luck, I'm sure it will be fine. Just focus on the beautiful baby you will have at the end of all this.

Things looking favourable over here - just went in for a sweep and assessment and apparently I'm 3 cm already...?
The sweep seems to have given the baby a nudge though cause contractions coming regular now.

Not sure when I should call the hospital? They're every 10 minutes or so but don't last very long... DH won't be home for another half hour.

MMH even though i'm new to this thread can i wholeheartedly agree with everyone else - you're not in there at the time they want to make their lives easier, and i know that on AN wards there are no exceptions. if you can please stick to your guns and go in tomorrow morning.

good luck for the inductions today and for march mama. mmh, fight induction tonight if that's what you want. i found a little bit of pushback worked in my case. they are used to just having to manage the masses but may respond if presented with a firm but logical argument.

piggyp - did you also get the contraception talk from the health visitor? although i feel good, dh and i nearly laughed her out of the house!!

C4it sorry. Um the next thing we all talked thru was risk of bad conveyor belt care in labour versus would coacvlcmad get there fast. We called one to help resus george but it was not needed midwife did fine. He was stuck for 5 mins and 5 moves then came out when she pushed shoulder back in and round pelvic bone as i had huge contract push. Kept his heartbeat fine on cord. Breathed after 1 min of puff from her. Less intervention than many yard births. Now just stuck here with really mild jaundice.

Merry Thanks for that - sounds like you both did brilliantly. My DD was only stuck for a minute or so and first move (McRoberts) solved that.

I am arguing that quality of care, my mental state, etc will be much better at home therefore I will labour more effectively. I'm about 10 mins blue lights from hospital but am convinced less likely to have shoulder dystocia if labour at home. Am sticking to my guns for now - my birth my way .

Congratulations again you did SOOOOO well.
