Tip of the day

If your DH says he wants breakfast in bed, chuck a sleeping bag onto the kitchen floor. MamaG

Quote of the week

Bucharest on the potentially perilous pitfalls of pregnancy: "You get so used to grown men whose first names you don't know shuftying about up your nethers that you have to chant to yourself, like a mantra, in the dentist's waiting room, "Don't take your pants off, it's just teeth this time."

Recipe of the week

Porpoise's red berry pavlova: lashings of strawberries and cream for Wimbledon finals weekend - with the ace addition of a crunchy, chewy meringue base. Serve with panache and await a grateful chorus of, "Ooh, I say!"

Alexia - The prize consisted of a fabulous Head tennis racquet in its own case; a pair of Fred Perry tennis shoes with their own cotton drawstring bag (white, v. tasteful; a Fred Perry V-neck jumper (black, beautiful merino wool, v.tasteful) and a rucksack (Navy with only a small Highland Spring logo in white on it). When I was phoned by the PR lady re sizes, I gave sizes to fit dd (she's 12 in a couple of weeks). She is completely thrilled as she plays tennis at school in the summer term.

Oh also a lovely handwritten letter from the aforementioned Sarah apologising for the prize taking so long to arrive smile
Thanks Alexia and Mumsnet, Nintendo DS plus game and book arrived today.

Hi EustaciaVye

Our very kind sponsors have said they'll send new dolls to you, could you email me your details at alexia@mumsnet.com

Hi I was one of the winners in the build a bear comp. I have not received anything yet - I wondered if you could chase it for me as I just read one of the winners got theirs on 29th Dec.

Thought I was waiting patiently, but have two Sons and two Neices who are desperate to go get their "christmas presents"

Thank you xx

I would have loved that prize envy
By   Wed 31-Dec-08 18:21:13 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Alexia, I really hope Dettol do give the prize again. Next time round though, it might help everyone if they specify a budget ie up to £500 worth of house cleaning, as the original competition did not state this and I think this caused some confusion with the Dettol PR company and the cleaning company.

We live in a 3 bed house, so pretty average I guess. However if we had lived in a 10 bed mansion, the top to bottom house clean would have cost Dettol quite a lot more!
By   Wed 31-Dec-08 15:42:48 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
What a prize tigermoth! envy
Aww poor Alexia!
I had a prize arrive fairly swiftly once but that was when JJ was in charge...
Hunker - My prize came within a fortnight, with a little compliments slip saying congratulations

EustaciaVye if you don't get new dolls, I can't fix the singing, but I can send you one of the crowns from DD's - she will lose it soon enough anyway!
PinkJenny - why did you enter a maternity comp?
By (from MNHQ)   Wed 31-Dec-08 15:29:13 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Hello tigermoth - god that sounds like an amazing prize!

I'm glad you are pleased with the results, and i'll pass on your kinds words to Dettol and let them know we'd be keen to run this competition again
By   Wed 31-Dec-08 07:59:33 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Just sending a big thank you for the Dettol house clean prize. The clean took place just before Christmas and in a magical day, two cleaners cleaned my house from top to bottom (a feat I have never managed in that time scale!).

A rep from the cleaning company had visited a few weeks earlier and we went through each room, discussing what would need to be done. I then moved away clutter as agreed and the cleaners did the rest.

What really added to their efforts was the carpet clean. We have carpets in every room, including the bathroom, so it was wonderful to have them restored to something approaching their original state.

It was a fab prize and helped to make our Christmas extra special and I am still basking in the glory of a cleaner house. Having to declutter for the cleaners did us a world of good.

I hope Dettol offer this prize again in a future Mumsnet competition - it really was life enhancing. There was some confusion over the extent of the carpet cleaning, but hopefully this will be sorted next time round.

Thank you mumsnet!!!

If they're vouchers, etc or small things, can you have delivered to the office so they're ready to send before the competition starts?

Or can you post more and more derogatory things about the company sponsoring the prize if the weeks go by and they fail to deliver?

wink

Do get a Rottweiler though. If nothing else, you can threaten trolls with it!
By (from MNHQ)   Tue 30-Dec-08 17:01:33 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
hi EustaciaVye funny you should ask as the last couple of weeks i had thought of that wonderful idea. I think i'll put it into the guidelines for next year! Whether is all runs more smoothly is another story!

Hopefully the packaging wont be a problem, besides it would have been all ripped open anyway!

And yes...why am was i working on a Mon evening wink

hunkermunker - don't tempt me with such wonderful ideas... wink I think i'll run Christmas competitions in June next year, that should leave plenty of time for them to arrive! grin
I mean, obviously, if I have to have them, I will. grin

Because I never win anything!
Alexia - I have emailed you. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but I have won the £500 Blossom Mother and Child vouchers.

Erm, I'm not pregnant, and dd is too old for their clothes. I have called them to see if they do a non-maternity range, and they do a limited collection, however it is not available on line, and I live in Liverpool. As their stores are in London, I can't get down there to spend my vouchers on their non-maternity stuff!

I know I do sound really ungrateful. Soz. What can I do????????

[whining emoticon]
By   Mon 29-Dec-08 21:17:38 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Thanks Alexia. Just to clarify though, I no longer have any of the packaging as it got lost in the Christmas chaos.

Out of interest do you have service levels in place with your sponsors? For example, winner will be contacted within x days, item will be despatched within x days etc. You seem to be forever chasing the sponsors which must be a drain on MN resources.

And why are you working on a Monday evening? grin

Are there any competitions where people win their prizes, their prizes arrive swiftly and everyone's happy? Alexia, you must want to cut your head off at times! You have the patience of a saint! Maybe invest in a Rottweiler in the NY?

EustaciaVye - oh that's not nearly good enough, let me just send them a really kind email explaining the situation, this is rather disappointing, i'm sure it was a mistake and i'll just see if they are able to send you new dolls...thanks for posting this
By   Mon 29-Dec-08 20:21:40 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Hi Alexia,

I was very lucky to win the Barbie Diamond Castle prize ages ago. I gave them the DVD straight away and I saved the dolls & flying horse for DDs for Christmas. They were thrilled. (as was I as it saved me loads of £).

Only problem was that when we opened them, one of the dolls had a broken crown. And the other one's batteries had run out, When we finally got to a shop to find the little tiny circle batteries we have found that the doll only sings one song instead of the two she is meant to. Not a huge problem but it means it is a bit hard to co-ordinate the 2 dolls to sing together grin

Not posting this to moan, or to expect you to do anything, but I just felt you should know really. Perhaps the sponsors should check the products before they send them out.

Was the blardy hell to me ??

The reason i let my 3 spend them was because if I had taken 5 children as the prize stated, then that wouldn't have been enough for a bear and an outift each so i'd of then had to have told guest children to bring extra money with them to buy an outift, plus pay for mine to have an outfit too.

Also I don't drive so there would of been the problem of how to get all 5 children to the shop without me losing one.

By   Mon 29-Dec-08 18:04:08 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Thanks Alexia, it was ok you could spend them on anything, we took them with us shopping and asked.

Tbh I think the party was something you just organised yourself and then gave each guest a voucher. There was no mention of anything else in with the vouchers.

In the end I rather greedily let my 3 spend them all blush. They all had a bear, and outfit and were absolutly thrilled.

Thanks MN
Thanks Alexia.

Hi IllegallyBrunette I would have thought that you can spend them on anything at Build-A-Bear Workshop...do the voucher make reference to HSM? If not then I would presume it can indeed be spent on anything, I'll drop them an email just to confirm.

Did you receive a party as well?
No sign of the Nintendo DS here either, although maybe it will take more time, what with Christmas and all. smile

Hi Alexia, do you know wether the build a bear vouchers have to be spent on high school musical stuff ??

I recieved the vouchers today with a short note, but it doesn't say if they have to be spent on hsm stuff or if you can use more than one voucher per person.

My dc are dying to go and spend them but I can't see ds wanting hsm stuff.

Right guys - bit of a backlog again!

Congratulation to 1legmummy, IllegallyBrunette and TheButterflyEffect you've each win the High School Musical Build-A-Bear workshop party for your child and 4 friends with a £20 gift voucher to spend at Build-A-Workshop!

and our 3 runners up KewcumbersRoastingOnAnOpenFire, taczilla and shoptilidrop each win a copy of Holly and Hal Moose!
Who won the Hamleys vouchers?
Can I just ask how do you actually enter a competition? I would like to win the toy box and have done a profile page as asked. Does the mighty MN automatically know that I have entered? Do I have to go somewhere else to say that I have and which prize I would like? Or am I doomed to a life of prizeless grey mediocrity through my own ignorance?

I'm not offended! I'm very sorry that winners are having to wait more than a few days for the prizes, but we do everything we can to ensure that they do arrive without any problems.

We don't actually keep the prizes at MNHQ and when chasing we are informed that they will be dispatched within a week etc but our hosts are often chasing another department etc so it can be a bit slow!!

Apologies to anyone who has/or is waiting for their prize to arrive

By   Sat 20-Dec-08 13:06:46 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
alexia, I just saw your post addressed to me on the DS thread - sorry to confuse you, I am not waiting for a prize myself (I have never won one grin)

I just know of a few individuals who have been left in limbo and didn't like to keep nagging you about it, and I thought that was a bit off - IMO MN should be following up & making sure people have received the prizes they were told they had won, not leaving it up to them to chase the donors (& eventually giving up because it doesn't seem worth the effort)

Miaou, you've nothing to be sorry for - the people who said they'd give a prize were perfectly happy to take the publicity - they should honour the prize.

Alexia, don't take it personally. Surely you want people to get their prizes? That's rhetorical - I know you must do!
I don't think I'm being an ingrate, WalkinginaWaynettaWonderland. I won a prize, my kids are excited about it, and disappointed that nothing has materialised. I could have let it go, admittedly, but tbh I think that's as disingenuous to Mumsnet as it is to me - they're going to think that Ladybird have upheld their end of the bargain, unless I tell them otherwise.

And I'm sorry if you find that offensive, I can't imagine why you would. sad

alexia, thank you. I will email you in the morning.

I am getting a little concerned, I won a ds lite on 28 Nov and nothing has arrived yet. I did email you but no reply.

Is it likely to come, and if so will it be before Christmas?

thanks

I see I have not yet won my right to post in Winners' Corner sad

For some reason the Christmas Namechange closing date seems to be have changed. After the original deadline had passed. Doesn't seem very fair to me (defeat being snatched from the jaws of victory by my own campaigning perhaps? enforced disqualification? general F*ck up at HQ...?)

I'm NOT AT ALL bitter and twisted and desperate for PopCap games.

Alexia, it's fantastic - the camera arrived..!!! I am sooooooo pleased, I can't tell you! I'll be shooting pictures of assorted family members ad nauseam for the next weeks - what incredible good timing (as most of these family members I don't get to see that often). RIght. Off to charge the battery and pour over instructions.
Thank you thank you thank you!!
Have the build-a-bear winners been announced?
By   Mon 15-Dec-08 19:48:36 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
That's great - I'm actually going away for 2 weeks from Sunday, so if it arrived before then that would be fab. I'm sure the neighbours would rescue any parcels lingering on my doorstep, but if it gets sent recorded it usually gets returned to sender after a week, I think.
Sorry to be a pain, but do you think the kind camera people would be able to send it before Sunday...? Thanks for all the effort either way!

By   Sat 13-Dec-08 22:22:05 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
I've won the 'Babies in Sheeps' clothing' comp!
I only entered because I saw the post from MN HQ saying that those of us living outside the UK could enter! Some natural justice there I think...
...and for those of you who know I live in the South of Spain and assume sheepskin clothing will be wasted on my DD2 - it's blardy freezing here in Granada, I can see the snowy mountains from my window, am about to buy a woodburning stove and we were caught in a hail storm last week! grin

Oh, I am happy, I never win anything normally...smile

Hi Alexia

Looks like my comment has got mixed up with Humphreycushion's - I posted "Can't believe I've won..I never win, made a dull old Monday much better".

I don't know how this stuff happens - I'm not the most techy person in the world!!

Looking forward to getting the Little Princess package prize - any idea when it will arrive? I's so excited as I never win
anything!!! I did send my address by e-mail but as it went from work I want to make sure it got to you.

thanks again - Squeezypumpkin

Hi Threadworm, our sponsor sends thier apologies and it's shame they were just a bit late saying you could keep the prize in end!! sad
By   Wed 12-Nov-08 15:03:30 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Thanks GentleOtter. I've sent the package back now, so I hope they will send you something soon.smile

I felt really mean getting it: a gentle otter is far too lovely to steal stuff from -- and a gentlegarotter is far too dangerous.grin
Hi there - the Smartbike arrived today, despite my thinking the whole thing was a huge wind-up. grin
Thank you so much for providing this, very lavish, Christmas present for my four year old. Now, where to hide it???

Alexia

Are you able to tell me when the prize might arrive ? (hopefully before Xmas !)

Thanks Alexia, and oh dear to Gentleotter whose prize I seem to havesadblush. I'm really happy to send back the goodies to Hawkins as soon as they confirm that I should do that, and where to send etc.
Oh, vouchers would be fabulous, then I'd definitely not have to worry about the right size for recipient! Fingers crossed! Many thanks.

Humphreyscushion, i'm so sorry no-one has contacted you, I cannot understand why as Ib passed on both your details in the same email!!

I'm sure it will be fine for Maebee to mail you the contact for the sponsor, or if you like you can pass it on to me and i'll email it to Humphreyscushion.

i really thought they would have been in touch by now, so many apologies for the delay in this

Aero, i'll let them know the size you would like, funny, they haven't asked actually, it might be they give you vouchers.

oh dear threadworm, i've sent you an email, looks like the wrong prize has been sent out

Gentle Otter have you recived a Hawkin's hamper?

The DVDs will be sent out after 1st December when it is release, hope thats ok!

MNHQ: I got a lovely package today from Hawkins Bazaar, the prize for my 2nd place in the Halloween comp. For which, many thanks,

BUt instead of the DVDs they have sent me the goodies mentioned as being part of the 1st prize.

So, I'm worried that they might have sent them to me in error and that GentleOtter might therefore not get her rightful package of goodies.

Has GentleOtter received hers? Should I try to send back my package -- and would I still get the 2nd prize DVDs???

Hi MaeBee, thanks for the info. smile
I saw further down the thread that you'd already been contacted - maybe our reputation proceeds us, which is why we haven't! grin
It would be great if you could CAT me with the contact details, assuming Alexia is OK with that.
We don't want to go until April, but it would be good to know that it's all booked.
Good tip re train tickets too - we usually use thetrainline, which offer similarly good deals.
Thank you. smile
humphreycushion - we won the zoo trip too and a woman called Lesley contacted us. i'm just telling you this so you can be ready! she said to give her the dates we wanted to book it for and they do all the booking with the hotel and making sure those dates are free etc.she gave me her number to call back (am i allowed to email it to you?! or is that not allowed, ALexia?!) anyway, we are not going til March now so i haven't yet called her back.
i really hope they get in touch soon its soooo gutting having to wait! especially when you want cheap tickets.
other top tip: if you need to get train to london check www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com if you live up north.igenerally get tickets from leeds to london for about £10 each way if you book in advance. its much better than national rail enquiries for getting good fares to show up.

Has teh FatFace winner been announced?

I realise I've jinxed myself now by asking this because it deffo won't be me.
Thanks Alexia. I'm wondering about sizing though. I guess it won't matter too much as I won't be keeping the clothes for myself, but I do intend to donate them to a very special cause, so am guessing a medium size would be fine for most (no good if it were myself, but am hoping recipients won't be carrying such a wide load as I do grin).

Yes, actually, I think I'll have this one please.....

By   Thu 06-Nov-08 21:02:58 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Blimey - that sounds like the definition of 'luxury hamper' has been rather stretched!

How crappos - I was looking forward to something we could enjoy over Christmas - y'know, something more like this

(Kenco folk take note...)

Let's hope the Costa Rica trip hasn't been equally over-stated - perhaps they'll be staying in a youth hostel and visiting a Starbucks for their 'coffee experience' .... grin
By   Thu 06-Nov-08 18:49:40 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Me too Legacy!

I am actually really rather disappointed. I was thrilled to have been one of the winners - I have never won anything before!

When I got the email from MNHQ, it said i had won a "luxury coffee hamper PLUS six months supply of coffee".

By the sounds of it, we just get a load of instant coffee sad

I don't mean to sound greedy or indeed ungrateful blush, but to me, a luxury hamper is more than some coffee, especially when it said PLUS six months supply of coffee.

Hi Alexia still haven't heard from Ladybird re my print prize - would be great to have it for xmas. Could you look into this please. Many thanks
Hi

Got my Kenco Hamper, thanks smile

For those who want to know. The prize was:

A hamper, lots of staw that DD wanted to eat (she thought it was spaghetti!) and 12 jars of instant. (4 of which were de-caf [yuck])

I must admit I had a grander Hamper in mind but there you go! The toddler group won't need to buy coffee for ages smile and the hamper will be re-used for Christmas.

I haven't heard anything at all from the 'Crave' company since winning the maternity clothes (good job i'm not pregnant!!).

I have a plan in mind though to be able to put them to extremely good use and it needs to be in plenty of time for Christmas, or it will be too late.

Could someone chase this up for me please?

I've never won anything anywhere, ever.

I do wonder whether there should be a rule that people can't win more than a certain number of competitions within a certain time frame? Not necessarily because I want to win (I rarely enter the competitions) but it does seem a little unfair that it's always the same people that win..?

Rosco - you're right, it has been a bit of a struggle of late - a few of the hosts have gone off on holiday without sorting out the prizes before hand, so delegation has been a factor. It really isn't an excuse though and I shall keep chasing outstanding prizes.
FrazzledFairyFay - if you haven't done so already please do email me your contact details at catherine@mumsnet.com
Tigermoth - glad you're all sorted, thanks for letting me know
Bundle - this person is one of those who've been away, I've spoken to someone else who has assured me it'll be sent out this week.
