i've had it since february and it seems to have come back with a vengeance. i've been referred to a specialist but that will take weeks. gp hasn't given me any more ab's just nasal spray which is useless.

any home remedies i can try apart from snorting salt water? tempted to buy drugs off the interenet.

oooh I am going to get some. Had the same sinus thing since feb South East. its evil isn't it. I need something to blow my head off before I do it myself. Where does all the green gunk come from ??!

BUY A NETTI POT.

Or one of these squeezy things:
sinucleanse

Irrigate your sinuses 2-3x/day until your attack clears, then maintain by irrigating every other day.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sat 17-May-08 20:33:44
it is evil mousemole, i can feel it in my cheek but it just won't budge, i have a cold which is making it thousand times worse.

the sinucleanse sounds hopeful, stagnant mucus is what i have . that's probably why it's green too. why does it take so long to go.

also, try the following.
go sit in a steam room for twenty minutes. brilliant. and you have lovely clean pores afterwards.
do some serious excercise. enough to make you sweat and sweat and sweat. do at least three times a week. the sweating part is very important. it really helps clear out infection.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By expatinscotland on Sat 17-May-08 20:37:00
i'll warn you, it is NOT pleasant to irrigate at first. do it over the sink.

quite the contrary, especially when you're really bunged up.

but perservere.

OMG, it's soooo worth it!

i think i'd do it after i had a good inhale of those methol crystals.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sat 17-May-08 20:43:35
i'm desperate to get rid of it. at least the netti pot thing seems to reach the part that's infected.

what sort of serious exercise? just running or something? i'm quite lazy and don't do much really.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By expatinscotland on Sat 17-May-08 20:48:01
it does get there.

at first, it doesn't appear to be making much difference - i'm a chronic sinusitis sufferer myself.

at first it's like, 'that didn't do jack shit! five minutes later i was bunged up.'

but after a few days, if you hang in there, you will reap the rewards.

and even more so once you start maintaining it.

actually, it was my mother's ENT who suggested netti pot/irrigation to her - it appears i inherited her shite sinuses.

Face massage- push everything towards the ears, hurts like hell for a while but it does help. Holding a hot cup af tea against your face (best not to do this in public as you do get red marks!). Hopi ear candles to get everything moving again, and of course, steam inhalation. Get well soon.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sat 17-May-08 21:04:10
thanks calvemjoe, i've tried all the facial massaging, don't think i can get the hang of it as nothing much happens .

my ears are really stuffed too.

am ordering a pot from ebay expat, i really want to do it right now, watched the video on the link, doesn't seem too bad. i'm thinking of hanging upside down to budge the stuff.

Hi Expat,
I tried the netty pot - but some water seemed to get stuck in my sinus cavity and would then get infected. A week or so later I would be tilting my head to do something and out would pour horrid yellowy water stuff. Is it still worth perservering with it ? Mine is affecting mainly my left side, in a pocket in my cheek. I can almost feel it bubbling away making green gunk ! Have had too many antibiotics but nothing works. Normally i do loads of exercise but this sinus thing has kept me off it for weeks. Right, tomorrow I will just make myself RUN on the treadmill at the gym. SEAstra, I'll try all these methods with you - got to be worth a shot hasn't it. Mine started after a hernia operation. I am convinced I picked up a flesh eating sinus disease in hospital !
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sun 18-May-08 11:44:31
mine is my right side, pocket in cheek too, though caused by a tooth abscess. anti biotics didn't work mouse? i was thinking of going to dr again this week to see if they could prescribe anything else. i wake up with an awful taste in my mouth. i hate it so much.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Sun 18-May-08 16:09:45
SeAstra - have had 3 doses of AB's. Normally so against them but needs must. Anyway, the last dose was a 10 day course and the doc swore they were so strong it would definitely get rid of it. Well it did for about a week, during which time I was in Spain and was wonderfully symptom free. Got back last sunday and by wednesday it was back. Now I wonder if it is something environmental causing it. I have had ENT problems in the past but NOTHINg this bad for this long. Did Netti pot this morning on Expat's advice and did get a big green lump out from the left side this pm ( sorry if TMI) so will persevere with it. I think natural approaches are the only way forward. Thinking of getting a humidifier for my bedroom. I too hate it so much, it has really dragged me down, mentally as well as physically.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By expatinscotland on Sun 18-May-08 16:38:16
I think you need to see an ENT, mouse. If you're using lots of ABs and the infection's no shifting, you really need a referral to see an ENT and hopefully find out the root of the problem.

You could have problems with your ears that could be compounding the problem, and they're not always obvious.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Sun 18-May-08 17:17:46
thanks expat - think you may be right. What role do the ears play in it all ? They have been popping a bit so assumed all linked.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sun 18-May-08 17:44:48
yes they're all linked my ears are popping alot too, get referred. my referral seems to be taking forever i'm waiting for the waiting list.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sun 18-May-08 17:52:14
i've had two courses of abs too, but someone on here recommended flagyl, but i suppose you can't just ask the doc for it can you?

it's meant to be good for infections in closed airless spaces. what did you take mouse?

I started suffering from sinus infections aou 18 months ago....had the usual treatments...ABs decongestants.

Tried reflexology, netti pot, crystals etc.

Went on steroidal treatment for ages.
The steroids worked but then the problem reoccured.
Saw consultant ENT, who stuck a camera up my nose.
He re diagnosed problem as being chronic rhinitus...[leading to sinus related problems].

HTH...if not, then sorry for waffling!

right, going to try cranial osteopathy. I am seeing a herbal medicine lady and she is a cranial osteopath too. Going to get a referral to ENT as well though. Urrgh, sinus problems are so GRIM. SEastra, cant remember what antibiotics, jus that it was a areally strong 10 day dose.

it doesnt matter what sort of excercise. as long as you sweat. buckets of the stuff. the sweating helps exceter the bad stuff. like th enettipott, it is something you will need to persever with.
it worked wonders for me.

I'm wondering if this is what I've got; I can't smell or taste and have had a hideous headache on the right side of my head (near ear and behind eye!) for more than a week?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sun 18-May-08 20:53:19
lol calvemjoe really? they must do more than that

the methol crystals are great, but everything available has short term effects. it's really like having a trapped infection that just won't shift. i must have kept balm tissue manufactureres in business for the past four months.

I went for tmj disfunction (clicking jaw) and she barely touched me but it felt like I'd been punched after my 1st visit and it ached for days. But, it did really really help (after the 1st session!) and I got relly possitive results when she moved onto my migraines and sinus problems. It made me really angry though a few £100 later when I had a scalp massage, I could feel all of her wonderful work being undone grin

Oh, i did ear candling too.
Didn't work.

Do you have a post sinus drip, where the gunk runs down the back of your throat?
That's yuck.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sun 18-May-08 21:19:13
yes i have the post nasal drip, constantly and a polyp up my nose. i can't believe this is all cause by a tooth abcess.

that sounds weird calvemjoe grin

OMG, love the link Hobo. SEAstra, mine is maxillary too then. Also get some pain above my eyebrow on that side. I am braving the gym today to get VEY HOT and VEY SWEATY. gross. I would like to be able to pull my skin off, clean the sinus with disinfectant and then put the skin back.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Mon 19-May-08 10:45:10
my nose is awful today, i had some wine and that seems to make it so much worse and i have a cold. i want to pull off the skin too.

Oh god, this thread is so comforting.

I've had sinus problems for ages, but they've been really bad since September last year.

I was told a few weeks ago that apparently I have something called 'Gilberts syndrome' or 'congenital hyperbilirubinia' - which basically means my liver doesn't work like other people's and I'll always have high bilirubin levels. I'm sure my liver symptoms were triggered by all the paracetamol I took last year to cope with my sinuses. sad

I'm convinced that the dry rot and damp in my horrible old Edwardian house is at the root of my problems. Mind you, I also have a deviated septum (wonky nose), nasal polyps and.....argh!...rhinitis.

I'm definitely going to get a netti pot (have also read elsewhere that this is worthwhile), and exercise as a route to sinus relief.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Mon 19-May-08 12:51:43
Fabsum, sorry to hear about your problems but welcome to the club ! Does your liver problem make your sinus issues worse or is it not related. Know what you mean about the paracetamol, I seem to be popping them all the time at the moment.
So, have just got back from the gym where did treadmill and cross trainer ( blardy awful), but cheeks got very hot and just had an emission out of the bad side so it does seem to help. Did Netti pot this morning and will do it again later. Am i right in thinking you can add salt to make it mroe effective ?
Anyone else want to join the awful sinus club ?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Mon 19-May-08 12:52:31
PS - SE, had wine last night too and am bad today. God, just so depressing this sinus stuff. I found that beer made mine SHOCKING.

how are you all now? i'm still dead miserable.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Wed 21-May-08 08:32:06
Hi SE, mine a little better which can only be attributed to the netti pot I have done every day this week. Off to the gym again today, yuk. I am flying on sunday and dreading it as it always makes my sinuses worse. Hope you feel better soon. Did you get a netti pot ?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Wed 21-May-08 12:43:39
i'm waiting for it in the post. i feel like i'm underwater . will have to go for the cotton wool soaked in salt water up the nose thing.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By mousemole on Wed 21-May-08 18:52:05
urgh, poor you. I am quietly pleased with the netti pot and hope you will be too. I seem to get a little green gunk out every morning, better out than in. I think hayfever and pollen are playing a part in mine too.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By southeastastra on Sat 24-May-08 12:47:19
i got my pot, is the whole lot of water meant to go in? think i'm not doing it right
