I have eczema on my hands and it makes my nails ridged - mainly if I pick at the skin around the cuticle & nail bed then they grow out bumpy. I think it damages the nail while it's soft and forming. Could your ds have hurt his finger sometime back & that be what's damaged the nail?
My dd has always suffered eczema and has two large toe nails that are thick and discoloured. Did seem to improve/grow out but not looking so good again at the moment. We did once mention it to a doctor who said to come back if it didnt go. Yesterday I noticed they were rather crumbly again when I cut them. I always wondered if the wet wraps caused it originally.
I am allergic to certain paints and stupidly did some painting thinking it would be okay in Jan. I have severe allergic excema.
For the last few months i have lost three finger nails and warped two. My fingers literally swelled up and produced alot of gunk before falling out.
I currently have one left on my thumb that is growing back now. All the other have eventually grown back in the meantime. My nails looked upside down - with the healthy nail pushing the raised horrid nail off.
Not at all pleasant for me but very much worse for a child i would imagine. You and he have my sympathies.
Betnovate is really good - that and steroids are the only things that work for me. I'm not sure if there's a lower age limit on Betnovate as it's quite strong.
I don't usually take painkillers as it's more sore than hurting (and it looks such a flipping mess too).
Try massaging the nail daily with extar virgin olive oil - it will improve the blood supply and help it to grow and smoooth out the ridges. I would aslo suggest you think about visiting a homeopathic practitioner to see if they could prescribe some pillules to help with the eczema.
