For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:
EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.
DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.
There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.
Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page
UR has been snogging <points and sings the up-a-tree song>
Right, I'm going to do better tomorrow. Today's haul of lettuce, cucumber, peppers, carrots, tomatoes, grapefruit and blueberries will be forgotten in a whirlwind of raw food activity.
Thank you everyone for compliments on photos tatties, I think he was kissing him - he is touchingly in love with him, always comes and kisses him and puts his arms around him and says 'I love you, I'm looking after you' <aaahhhh>
We had a very nice day at dh's aunt and uncle's with PIL, who are staying there currently. They live on what used to be a farm and have a big yard, lawn, kitchen garden and a paddock next door with mares and foals. ds1 had a lovely time. dh, PIL, aunt and uncle monopolised the dses while I lay in the sun. We ate cake.
right back here on the good girls thread I know everyone will be pleased to hear about my big salad lettuce, spinach, cucumber, tomato, avocado, chickpeas
and my trip to the gym: 10 mins on arm pedalling machine (nearest thing I can get to a cardio workout these days ) and 40 mins footling around with weights and a gym ball
<clears up> <turns on fan to clear whiff of smoke coming from outside the church hall> <frowns at sounds of laughter and eating drifting in through windows>
well done zippi that must have been very satisfying for you however whenever I feel intimidated by policywonk's intellect and debating skills I remind myself that she did once make playdough with tartare sauce
Horrible because I have had an itchy bot all day + felt like I needed to have a crap, but didn't bother going as I knew it wouldn't happen; then was seized with undeniable urge whilst DP was at the shop; passed the usual pile of rabbit droppings while feeling like my fanjo was going to turn inside out; experienced sudden terror of entire lower half prolapsing and having to be carried off the throne like a pregnant Elvis; failed to evacuate properly; left toilet feeling frustrated at my body's inability to handle this most basic process, resigned to having piles, plus still itchy. And then discovered that DP hadn't taken his keys when he went to the shop and had been stuck outside banging on the front door for ten minutes, lol.
cyteen I think this will indeed stand you in good stead you might however want to think about acquiring a few inhibitions before going to give birth or god knows what could happen
on a more positive note is the f+v not helping at all? are you actually eating any f+v
pineapple and beetroot are VERY EFFECTIVE you know
I'm going to struggle keeping up with both threads
Just realised that Maxibon are made by Ne*stle but it's an ice cream/biscuit sandwich with chocolate coating on one end. I hadn't had them for ages and saw them in the supermarket local grocers
Don't worry, I even horrified myself a little bit just then.
Without further details, constipation has been the worst part of pregnancy for me, it's been constant pretty much the whole way through. I know I've been really lucky all in all as have escaped morning sickness and most other rubbish side effects of being up the duff, but it's still pretty miserable.
no, constipation is really horrid are you doing all obvious things like drinking lots of water? and seriously what is your diet like? don't eat any white carbs and really ramp up the f+v
Blimey cyteen . Ricecakes are good for bulk. And nuts and seeds.
I still roll on the floor every time the tartare sauce comes up.
Pink, that sounds like, well, shite really. Mind you I spent ages making homemade raspberry icecream for pudding tonight as we had my niece and her ds coming round for dinner and dh spent the entire time prodding it suspiciously with his spoon. Clearly I should have given him a maxiwotnot and saved the effort.
Morning good veggers I have had mango which was non-cunting except when I dropped it on my foot it was surprisingly painful for a fruit related accident also banana, grapes, blueberries, raisins [fruit bloater]
have 2 extra children this morning and then a party where ds has to dress as a duck then going to see these fine chaps tonight
Quite jealous of your gig-going this evening Franny; all I'm going to be doing is reading the Highway Code and making some desultory efforts to pack more stuff up.
Am vegless as yet, but have salad and grapefruit for lunch, and leftover pepper pasta as well. I'm planning an evening blitz.
I think it's the last time we'll go out together before dc2 is born mind you I can't remember the last time we went out together - it is so convenient if one of us stays in and babysits and the other one goes out
Cyteen did you see my nux vomica tip, seriously, it'll change your life. For the better. Bottomwise.
I didn't mean to get dragged into the bottom talk, but it's important.
Have felt vaguely sick all day after drinking too too much yesterday. Must remember that daytime drinking makes me fall asleep and then topping up with gin and tonic makes me vaguely psychotic. Useful to know.
apple blueberries grapes spinach tomatoes orange juice <repentant vegger>
Hehe, at last the attention turns to someone else's backwater.
Thanks for the tips all, they have been noted and will be acted upon in escalating fashion (F+V carpet bombing first, then the rest if that doesn't work). The other handy side effect of this is that my hands will be too busy constantly cramming F+V into my mouth to ever type another word
yy doctors orders TooT last time I was pg I got banned from ironing, now THAT was a result this time - "keep your knees together at all times" oh well thanks a bunch
I am on a terribly 10/10 course this week -a ll about healthy eating and mental wellbeing!
And then the feckers served up chocolate cake for lunch! (after some very nice sarnies.) So apart from some grapes, pineapple and mleon I have only had a smattering of salad garnish in my sandwiches.
all you veggie veggers - what protein do you have with each meal? Apparently I don't get enough, although they were very impressed with my F and V intake [beam]
all food except fruit and some veg has enough protein in it to meet our requirements the meat and dairy industries like us to get our knickers in a twist about protein decent carbs with each meal and one or two portions of beans / nuts / lentils is plenty
the woman was askin for a typical day's food for us. I said (going on a typoical work day): fruit for brekkie, brown toast and marmelade at @10am, home made veg soup and bread for lunch, a banana mid afternoon and then chicken/pepper/onion fajitas/salad, salsa for dinner. sometimes cheese and biscuits. I said I was always hungry and had a huge appetite. She said I needed protein at each meal. I can't eat protein at brekkie, I can barely face fruit tbh but I'm always ready to eat by 10am.
Bit of a cough. Normally I'm okay with this kind of thing - strip them naked, plenty of fluids and rest, and they're fine. But since this hospital shenanigans I have been Anxious.
I took his temp 10 minutes ago, with one of those forehead strip things. Are they accurate? I don't usually use thermometers at all - see what this hospital business has done to me? Instinct not good enough any more.
He ate all his dinner, he has been drinking, he has been tired today, he has had his hand over his eye all day.
he may have an infection (viral) of some sort he is fighting, especially if he is coughing. May be nowt to do with his eye... Those forehead things are not terribly accurate but they do give an indication.
NHS Direct are not terribly useful I have found, but if you do want to ring for some reassurance, 0845 46 47.
It's good if he is eating and drinking. Especially drinking. A fever is just the body's way of dealing with an illness, but if it stays high, I'd fret.
(But you have to bear in mind that my ds had meninigitis so I tend to err on side of caution nowadays...!)
Toot, my Dr always says not to panic until a temp reaches 104 and the child seems ill - DS used to often have high temperatures and, other than being a little subdued, seemed ok
His whole head is hot. His eye is quite puffy, but then he has barely opened it today. I think I will tentatively assume that it is not his eye that is the problem. I will pour water into him and take him to bed.
Toot during my most militant no paracetamol phase went through dengue fever without it for four days made v swift recovery, ur's dr sounds just the ticket
the most important thing i learned from the experience was to trust my instincts...gp had been to house and said it was flu...she had never met my ds before and couldn't understand when I was trying to explain ds was seriously out of sorts, ie. he was non-responsive and ds normally never stops talking 3 hours later we were at A&E.
I DO trust my instincts. When he fell off the climbing frame he was just not himself - I don;t know, a bit white and shaky and shouty and stuff. Both DP and my dad said he would calm down soon but I knew someone was wrong. In retrospect I think he was in shock.
We went to the hospital and I am so glad we did and I am so glad I trusted my instincts.
tbh most of the time I am a dithering idiot - it takes me 25mins to choose a bottle of wine but when push comes to shove with the dcs I have always - I dunno - known.
V fine thanks, shouldn't be here due to dh birthday but hey ho I bet stroking the cat is helping him in that odd way that pets do with sick kids
It is amazing how quickly and ably children deal with these things and after a few days he may be proud of his cast! How is it set, is it set bent, straight?
