For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

We had a very nice day at dh's aunt and uncle's with PIL, who are staying there currently. They live on what used to be a farm and have a big yard, lawn, kitchen garden and a paddock next door with mares and foals. ds1 had a lovely time. dh, PIL, aunt and uncle monopolised the dses while I lay in the sun. We ate cake.

Haha, bring on the scat.

Horrible because I have had an itchy bot all day + felt like I needed to have a crap, but didn't bother going as I knew it wouldn't happen; then was seized with undeniable urge whilst DP was at the shop; passed the usual pile of rabbit droppings while feeling like my fanjo was going to turn inside out; experienced sudden terror of entire lower half prolapsing and having to be carried off the throne like a pregnant Elvis; failed to evacuate properly; left toilet feeling frustrated at my body's inability to handle this most basic process, resigned to having piles, plus still itchy. And then discovered that DP hadn't taken his keys when he went to the shop and had been stuck outside banging on the front door for ten minutes, lol.

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By FrannyandZooey on Mon 12-May-08 18:28:42
all food except fruit and some veg has enough protein in it to meet our requirements
the meat and dairy industries like us to get our knickers in a twist about protein
decent carbs with each meal and one or two portions of beans / nuts / lentils is plenty

I said (going on a typoical work day): fruit for brekkie, brown toast and marmelade at @10am, home made veg soup and bread for lunch, a banana mid afternoon and then chicken/pepper/onion fajitas/salad, salsa for dinner. sometimes cheese and biscuits.
I said I was always hungry and had a huge appetite.
She said I needed protein at each meal. I can't eat protein at brekkie, I can barely face fruit tbh but I'm always ready to eat by 10am.

the forehead things usually measure lower than actual (unless they are new and improved since I used them) so it may be a bit higher

i don't know what to suggest.. i guess I would watch and wait

but do you fear infection in the eye area

I don't know. How would I know? I feel a bit helpless. His eye is certainly sensitive today, but it has been v. bright.

he may have an infection (viral) of some sort he is fighting, especially if he is coughing. May be nowt to do with his eye...
Those forehead things are not terribly accurate but they do give an indication.

NHS Direct are not terribly useful I have found, but if you do want to ring for some reassurance, 0845 46 47.

It's good if he is eating and drinking. Especially drinking. A fever is just the body's way of dealing with an illness, but if it stays high, I'd fret.

(But you have to bear in mind that my ds had meninigitis so I tend to err on side of caution nowadays...!)

Does the area around the eye feel/look hot?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By UnderRated on Mon 12-May-08 19:00:31
I can't cope with two threads. <wail>

Toot, my Dr always says not to panic until a temp reaches 104 and the child seems ill - DS used to often have high temperatures and, other than being a little subdued, seemed ok

His whole head is hot. His eye is quite puffy, but then he has barely opened it today.
I think I will tentatively assume that it is not his eye that is the problem.
I will pour water into him and take him to bed.

Meningitis must have been v. v. scary fmf sad

UR, that sounds like a sensible doctor.

I can't cope with two threads either - I think I'll just stick to this one.
What happens when one finishes though?

Yes, toot, he is really good.

I think bed, water and keeping an eye on him is a good plan. But if you get more worried then perhaps GP/ A&E.

I'm going to stay on this thread too.

the most important thing i learned from the experience was to trust my instincts...gp had been to house and said it was flu...she had never met my ds before and couldn't understand when I was trying to explain ds was seriously out of sorts, ie. he was non-responsive and ds normally never stops talking
3 hours later we were at A&E.

My faith in instinct is coming back smile

Oh no Bee!!! Does he get grief when he is hurt? My ds1 does and I think it troubles him more than the pain.

Ds2 now 100 and bouncing about smilehmm

I think instincts should be given more credit. We know when our DC are not right.

Glad DS2 seems brighter now, Toot.

hello

what is wrong with mini toot??

I DO trust my instincts. When he fell off the climbing frame he was just not himself - I don;t know, a bit white and shaky and shouty and stuff. Both DP and my dad said he would calm down soon but I knew someone was wrong. In retrospect I think he was in shock.

We went to the hospital and I am so glad we did and I am so glad I trusted my instincts.

tbh most of the time I am a dithering idiot - it takes me 25mins to choose a bottle of wine but when push comes to shove with the dcs I have always - I dunno - known.

poor lad
how is he now? is he asleep?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By BBBee on Mon 12-May-08 20:45:42
no he isn't - he is listening to revolting rhymes and stroking the cat. I am trying to pick up the pieces of my day!

I got good advice on my thread - apprently the next plaster is lightrer and breathable so heis cheered by that.

Phew - 'tis exhausting!

How are you?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By stuffitllama on Mon 12-May-08 20:47:47
V fine thanks, shouldn't be here due to dh birthday but hey ho
I bet stroking the cat is helping him in that odd way that pets do with sick kids

It is amazing how quickly and ably children deal with these things and after a few days he may be proud of his cast! How is it set, is it set bent, straight?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By stuffitllama on Mon 12-May-08 20:48:55
and have you got a glass of wine yet you must need one
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By BBBee on Mon 12-May-08 20:51:08
it is set straight and as breaks go it is a pretty straight forward one.

Thanks for the wine persausion - will pour one now.

Have just realised we are on the good thread - um - I mean grape juice.
