I have to go to bed as I am beginning to misread thread titles, will check in again tomorrow, lol!

I'm with you all, I'm supposed gto be dieting anyway but I find it so difficult to cut out treats. so cutting down to one a week will really help. Glad we starting on monday because I've just bought an apple cake reduced to 55p in tescos blush I need to lose 2 stone all together. ok so shall we have weigh ins I think they would be good to keep us motivated.

can I join please? I need to lose 3 stones and every diet started on Mondays fails by Friday! Even when I stick to them the weight comes off painflly slowly (borderline underactive thyroid). Have decided just to eat v. healthily and no treats, as that can be sustained rather than real deprivation diets that make you fatter when you finish them! Anyone got any good metabolism boosting tips? Also, is it true the pill makes you fatter?

Yes please, can I join.

I start a new job (post mat leave) at the start of May and I want to look nice!

My problem is that when I start eating nice stuff I can't stop until the whole packet has gone.

Can we do some suggestions of healthy snacks to take the urges away? I can only think of fruit and nuts (mmmm Cadbury's Fruit and Nut) which I think will get a bit boring after a while.

Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By janeite on Sun 06-Apr-08 17:51:01
Weigh ins fine by me but I'd have to do mine in the evening.

Healthy snacks - I would love some ideas for sweet snacks that aren't too bad. Dry meringues aren't many calories I don't think but they are a bit like eating chalk. I like rock hard conference pears, sliced and ice cold as well.

Fantastic! Good to see so many motivated folks!

I think we should do a Monday weigh in?

So it is agreed, ONE treat per week, on a chosen day (for me it will be friday), the rest should be healthy snacks!

If you are breastfeeding, you should not really diet as such, but cutting out crappy unhealthy food will have enormous benefits to your baby anyway! Maybe fruit?
Or a nice smoothie made from crushed berries and youghurt ice cream?

Popcorn is a good snack that has no calories, but I dont think meringue is particularly healthy, it is after all egg white and a ton of sugar!!

Any other ideas?

no, I'm gonna ban treats altogether for first couple weeks, cos I have no will power.

I have no scales though, I was 12st 6 last week before scales broke, (not me, my 2 yr old, lol)so I need to be 9 and half or 10.

Woh, long slog, I fear.

I have no will power either. But it is easier to think "I will not have this bar now, I will have it on friday". Thinking, "I am not going to have chocolate for the foreseable future" makes it impossible. Then of course, I might be able to resist on Friday.... And say, NEXT friday, etc.

For me, I eat relatively healthily, and fairly small quantities, but I ruin it all on scoffing my self with waffles, and cakes and chocs and icecreams. It has to stop.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By notnowbernard on Sun 06-Apr-08 21:42:47
I think I eat quite healthily. I don't eat processed foods, eat lots of fruit and veg. Should probably eat less red meat though.

My problem is sugar. I can go without, but once I have a bit THAT'S IT. Can't just have 1 biscuit, 1 bit of choc etc etc. Have got into the habit of eating ot every day

Am not overweight but have noticed recently I'm getting spotty, trousers are getting a bit tight... stopped bf about 3m ago, too

Could probably do with losing 1/2 a stone

I'm going to join in Hi

I am BF and been using it as an excuse for ages whenever I tuck into some chocolate.. I've been wistfully remembering the days when I went to the gym and ran loads, well I ate a lot then but it was all healthy stuff, if you think like a healthy person you'll eat one.

Got some online food shopping coming tomorrow and I've added loads of fruit and veg and just blueberry muffins in the 'unhealthy' category instead of chocolate bars and biscuits. I should get things like yoghurts too, I used to eat one when I fancied something sweet and whilst they do have sugar in they're not that bad... esp plain yoghurt with a bit of honey stirred in.

toddler induced eating is definitely a problem here. It makes tantrums go a little easier!
I'm about to snack on some nuts. I've resolved to also steer clear of low fat/diet stuff. I rarely eat things like that anyway. Will try to snack on fruit and nuts and other low gi stuff like oatcakes. Will make normal family meals.
Glad to not be alone. Mostly my resolve lasts about a week!

Feeling proud of myself grin

Porridge for brekkie, then resisted the biccies after the school run & had a banana. Haven't made fruit salad yet, but having hunger pangs now, so will go and make some

Also have 2 toddlers, so prone to hiding my head in the larder - just so they don't ask 'what are you eating, Mummy?' blush

Good luck everyone!

No snacking so far - normally have cake for breakfast!! blush, and had a healthy salad lunch. Even managed to resist biscuits when kids had snacks, and after lunch.

Really having to think about it, though, so it shows how automatic it's become.

Lovely to know so many os us are there int he same boat, ready to be supportive!

Well done so far, everyone! Keep going and we'll have got the end of the first day nearly intact!

We can do it!

Great to see so much enthusiasm!

I had 1 1/2 slice of wholemeal bread with cheese and a glass of orange juice for breakfast. 1/4 wholemeal bread with erm... <whisper> nutella left over from my toddler.

For lunch, cured cooked fish with 1 potato. No treats so far!

Oh, my weight is 86kg. blush

1 slice wholemeal and one carrot with homemade hoummous for lunch with an apple and clementine. Small nibble of cheese. Have had a handful of fruit and nuts mid-morning which worked as a snack.
I find staying in the house very hard. Meeting friends this afternoon, will have to avoid coffee and cake!
All healthy snack ideas welcome!

Bowl of cornflakes and slice of toast for breakfast, with a cup of coffee

Toasted cheese and ham sarnie and a bowl of grapes for lunch

Drinking my way through the 2ltr of water

No snacks so far... if I get hungry this pm might have to have a cracker/crumpet/piece of fruit

Need to get some more diverse snacks in

Snack suggestion for sweet teeth - Sugar free jelly, make up a pint and put it into plastic cups. Each cup has about 10 calories in it.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would quite like to wean myself off sugar long-term. You know, like when someone stops smoking they generally aim to stop ^full stop^

Several years ago I stopped taking sugar in tea and coffee (my dentist scared me into it). At first I hated it but after a few months I sort of just 'switched' and now find the taste of sugary drinks disgusting.

Am hoping stopping sugar will have same effect. To the point where I won't ever think of it

Lunch: Quorn ham & mustard roll, glass of water.

Chances of me making it til teatime without eating = zero. But I'm OK as long as I stick with fruit and rice cakes.

Am I allowed a cappuccino or does it have to be skinny?

Also I don't think I could fit any more physical activity into the day, I'm running round after DS all day (and always have a morning and afternoon walk) and by the evening have to collapse on the sofa...

notnowbernard, if you want snacks that aren't bread/white carb based try oatcakes, or a little pot of yoghurt, a handful of nuts and raisins or a sliced apple and a chunk of cheese.

I am a total breadaholic but have lost weight quickly and easily before cutting out bread and sugar, which seems to 'ferment' inside me, causing all sorts of ructions!

Maidamess, we are all bread monsters in our house!

Will start by trying to cut out carbs as snacks. Will get some oatcakes and nuts etc on next shopping trip

Millet rice cereal with raisins and linseeds for breakfast.

Hummous, tomatoes and beansprouts in pitta bread for lunch, followed by pineapple chunks.

Am sitting here with a cup of tea while the kiddiwinks are asleep, resisting the siren call of the banana loaf in the breadbin.

I know! It is rather, isn't it? See, we do actually have healthy food around, but we also have a tendency to eat far too many puds and biccies and cakes - that's what I want to cut out but I find it so hard.

notnowbernard, I think this is probably right, it is possible to wean off it totally. When I was a student, I decided to stay away from anything chocolate for a year. I ate nothing that contained chocolate, and had cinnamon on my cappucino. After a few weeks the cravings stopped, and when a year later I could eat chocolate again it did not mean so much to me, at first. Then I got "hooked" again....

Good to see we are doing well so far! smile

We've got healthy food around, too. I think that generally I eat quite well. But like you, I consume too many puddings, treats, biscuits (at work - don't have them at home) and sweets/choc

Which is why I started the sugar ban last week
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By notnowbernard on Mon 07-Apr-08 13:57:25
Oh God, it's an addiction! shock

Abstinence is the only way!

I agree, though... sugar is a bit like a drug, isn't it? You crave it, you eat it, it alters the way you feel/gives you pleasure, you crave some more... blah blah blah

Who needs crack, eh?!

I got down to 10st10 just before I got pg with dd. When I got pg with ds, dd was 9 months old, and because I was still bf I hadn't lost all the weight.

No idea what I weigh now but don't think I'll get down to 10st10 again. I was running 3 times a week and at the gym twice working 42 hours with no breaks or time to snack......pre-children obviously. So I'd like to get down to 11st (I'm 5'10'' btw)

Anyway the point of this rambling post was I was SO over sugar and empty calories when I got pg with dd, but the baking and coffee mornings have caught up with me. blush

Okay it's cup of tea time and I've just snaffled 6 bits of dark chocolate! (Really enjoyed them.)
Had done well so far in avoiding half a pack of choccy biscuits mid-morning (my usual snack grin), but boy have I missed it. Chicken/bacon/tomato sauce on spaghetti for lunch but I still got that mid-afternoon just-want-to-sleep-and-sleep-and-sleep moment and NEEDED that choc. Thought about nothing else for two hours! Wasn't really hungry just NEEDED it! How sad is that! Salsa tonight so at least I'll burn it off.
This morning I went to the gym, so obviously I need a distraction strategy for the afternoons as well. Will have to make a plan tonight for tomorrow.
I've also resolved not to buy any more goodies for our cupboards for future "moments' and think I need to buy some nuts/fruit etc. (which just don't seem to have the same appeal somehow!)
Am wondering if I'm the only one .....

Struggle moment here...

it was dd2's birthday on Saturday, and the rest of her cake is in the larder. I have just given small pieces to dd2 and ds2 - and have retreated in here to log on, so I don't have to see them eat it envy

At least it's a change from yesterday when I snaffled about 5 small pieces through the day blush

Story so far -

breakfast = porridge with chopped up fruit and watered-down orange juice, coffee

lunch = omlette with chopped up leftover veg from last night, plus banana. Not 100% healthy, but I'm trying to have "proper" food for lunch, not sandwiches. Once I start on bread, I don't stop.

Have weakened slightly and had one biscuit with my afternoon coffee-and-a-sit-down. But it was only one and I am not going to have any more. No, I'm not. That's why I'm on here wink
