Just wanted to say well done ladies!!! I've still not go past doing week one as it seems to have upset my pelvis and hip (I had severe SPD), so am going to do my physio and then come back - but I'm watching you all
Had a fairly good one this morning - stopped slightly earlier than I should have done, as my legs were really painful. Feel OK now, not sure quite what happened.
Nice and bright out there, enjoy your runs, ladies
been out and done week 6 run 1 and blooming heck found it hard? couldn't wait to get home. crazy to think 2 x 5 mins and 1 x 8 mins was difficult when last week I did 20 mins no problem. I think the music last week was better so for the 25 min run will use last weeks music to help my brain.
I've got the b*gger all motivation bug! Been having some trouble with stiff neck/shoulders or trapped nerve or something and its been impossible to run. Got very strange looks when I tried, repeating my 'ow, ow, ow' mantra...
Anyhow, seems to be getting better but the weather is hideous! Keep thinking I should let me heal more, but I'm not sure I'm fooling myself any more!
hello i ahve been watching you all and sort of following but not with the podcast. anyway i would like some advice.
i have got stuck at about 4.5k (according to map my run) and now ipod has broken . i tried without music and it was much harder. also until clocks go back i can only run at weekends so am only going twice a week with no break day. i had increased time by adding a song every week. how can i keep on track and sustain improvement?
Helloooo!!! Waves hand at ladyjogsalot and everyone else.
I have been graduating! I graduated yesterday with my Masters in Education - so have had little time for running - work Tues / Thurs. Tomorrow, however, is another day and I'll do a bit of a run
off out for week 6 run 2 which is 2 x 10 mins then have a 25 minuter on Monday [help!] will use the 20 minute music and the cool down music for that though as I found that made it easier to run to
I'm here Ladyjogsslot, havent been posting so much, as I'm struggling a bit at the moment.
Congratulations Bramblebooks, hope you enjoyed your graduation.
Good luck Furball, hope the 2 x 10 went well, roll on Monday
I went out yesterday, didnt go that well, had to walk part of it, I think I've increased the length of my run too quickly, before I was ready. Will go out again tomorrow, and try again.
Ladyjogsalot - You called? Are you going today? Are you? You know you'll feel better for it!
Missed a couple because of rotten cold, and am really missing it. Hopefully will pick up again on Sunday, got to raise my game to the heady heights of 5 mins.
Oh yes, and in rash moment agreed to do Race for Life at Worcester. Oh my giddy aunt. I've agreed to run in public with people watching. Can you run with a bag on your head?
I'm back - ended up doing 1 x 15 minute and 1 x 10 as I accidently knocked the mp3 player onto the next tune when I nearly finished the warm up, so had to re-start the programme and couldn't be bothered to do another 5 minute walk so ran it!
I know how you feel wooluffy - I had a terrible bug and didn't run for 2 weeks. amazingly I started where I left off no probs. - ps - I think it's time for another meet up so come and find me over there.
Has anyone listened to the week 5 music? there is a track on there that plays running water - makes you want to do a paularadcliffe at the side of the road
I am here, sorry I have had bad knees so have been resting a bit as per chiropractors instructions. I have been doing aerobics and walking . i am gonna start running again tonight so we will see how I get on .
I've just done 5k!!! Well just over - about 5.14k, which took just over 34 mins. Can't believe it! I just checked my calender and it's 10 weeks since I did my first run so it's definitely achievable on this programme! I had 2 weeks in Feb where I only did one run and the last 2 weeks I've done a swim instead of 1 run.
misdee - pop over to the Runners' thread (not that you lot aren't runners, you absolutely are ) some of the mums there have run whilst pg so may offer advice.
Just back from skiing - had fantastic time and I think all that running was worth it as I was definitely fitter for skiing. Am a bit achey and my knees are a bit sore so may rest this week but please make sure I get back to running next week.... Not sure where to start though - I finished in week 7, and had run 5k. I think I'll just try and do a twenty minute run and work up from that with my own music ?
pmsl furball - know exactly what you mean about the water one! My main concern for my 10k in June is that there won't be toilets on the way and that I need a hair and makeup stop at 9k in readiness for my family at 10k - it'll be cameras a go-go!
Just done 5k today hugely happy as I haven't run for a whole week due to graduation and gyppy tummy!
I used a different strategy on timing today, which helped for me. A slower run for 1k for warm up, then bursts of running a bit faster (but not flat out, just picking up the pace a bit) for 1/2k at a time, then back to the slower run speed.
hope the run goes well, ladyjogsalot . I think once you've done the 20mins everything gets easier, iyswim, it's such a huge jump in distance, but slow down a bit and it's not so bad!
The calorie counter came in at about 350 burned today when I'd run the 5K - if that doesn't keep us going, what will? !!
I've made it to week 6. Did a whole 20 minutes run on friday and survived - unbelievable. But I did first of week 6 today and found it really hard going - in a way 20 minutes seemed easier - but I'm going to stick with and can't beleive that as of next week each of my runs will be over 20 minutes long!
debbiewebweb - exactly the same happened to me. - I did the 20 mins then the start of the next week was really tough. I did run 2 and that was alot easier.
I'm due for the 25 mins today - 25! can't believe it, especially when we know how hard it was in the start to run for 1 min
can't keep up with everybody indiviually - but good luck to everyone collectively, we can really do this and by the sounds of it weare
oh wow oh wow!! well done furball! I share that feeling! Sometimes to go further, I have to slow down to an almost walking jog!
My training days are all out of synch, if I unstiffen I'll do a 2 miler later, otherwise I'll wait until weds to do another 5k (I've got a nice route along the canal mapped out).
I think that now those of use who are at/nearly at 5k are doing this sort of distance, we've got to maintain at this sort of distance for the next 6 months in order to build body strength before moving on.
I got up to my 5k last year and have been running on and off before joining you inspirational lot and getting going again, aiming for a 10k by June. argh.
oh I'm still here, I lost the thread am repeating week 4 have done 2 runs so far and have completed all the running both time s- quite pleased as have nasty cough/coldy thing and period of doom
next out on Wed. days have changed a bit since I couldn't go one night because blimming children wouldn't go to bed.
have still not lost ANY WEIGHT. how is this even possible?
Well done everyone ! Sounds like you're all doing great.
I was going to give myself this week off (to add to the week off I had before skiing to rest my joints, the weeks skiing (although that did involve a lot of exercise) and then this week to allow my knees to recover... but think I might just be procrastinating !
I did weigh myself this morning to find I lost more weight in the last 2 weeks than when running ?! When we were away we were eating cooked breakfast, chips everyday for lunch, beer with lunch and in the afternoon, afternoon cake, 3 course dinners with lots of wine. I guess that shows what good exercise skiing is - if only I could go out for half an hour ski instead of running but not too many snow covered mountains in south west london sadly .
DD not in pre-school today so I can happily say I am going to start this week cos I can't today ! If I don't have anything on tomorrow am when dd is at pre-school I will go for a bit of a run to see how i feel. Remind and nag me everyone
Well done everyone - I like the idea of a quick ski every morning to shift those pounds, but no mountains out of my window either unfortunately
I've been having problems here ever since I went "off program" which serves me right I guess - yesterday I ran 14 mins, walked a track, then ran another 11 mins, which is a 25 min run, but I cant do it continuously. I dont know why, as I was running 22 minutes happily a few weeks ago. I'm guessing its psychological, so I'm going to give it all I've got tomorrow when I go out, to overcome the 14 minute barrrier. The problem is always the pain in my legs rather than feeling too tired, but I stretch religously before and after running - any suggestions anyone ?
Hi I downloaded the week 1 podcast and did it for the first time on Sat.Hoping to do it again today. Its great to read all you who are now 6 or 8 weeks down the line and running for like half and hour. I find it really hard and tbh will prob have to stick at week 1 for 2 or 3 weeks or maybe a month !
It really does get better very very quickly! If I'd been told I'd run for 3 minutes when the week 1 runs seemed to be killing me, I would not have believed them - but here I am 3 weeks later and I can. Next step up to 5 mins - looking forward to it!
I ran for 28 mins this morning, best of all, I set myself a distance target to achieve by Easter, when I started this at the begining of the year, and I've done it, in time
Thanks to everyone on this thread, as the support has been a big part of me sticking to this, and making my goal. Anyone who is feeling they're going backwards at the moment, or making no progress, stick with it, you are getting better, and you will get results.
Good luck to everyone running this week, its beautiful out there this morning
Well done to those who have found their mojo !! Yeah !!!
I think I might do a short run tomorrow to get myself back into it (I know yesterday I said I was going to do it today but I had to go shopping today so... tomorrow... it is... I think....
ok I have just redone week 4 and have done the whole lot every time, even though I have been ill this week. V.pleased with myself (tacked another 2 mins on the end of the last run tonight too so it was 7 mins)
am feeling more hopeful that I might actually be able to do this...
Top tip for those doing week 7 - just re do th 25 minuter of week 6 as at least he talks you through the other runs of that week so you know where you are. I found it worse just running to the music not knowing where I was time wise then he just pops on and says 1 minute to go.

Well done everyone! I've abandoned Rawb now and I'm just doing about a half hour run each time to my own music. I'm just trying to increase my speed gradually. I've already raised £100 for Race for Life and it's in May!
I am back in the game ! Finally stopped procrastinating and have just gone out. First run in 3 weeks so mapped out a 2 mile run and managed about 2.1 miles. Decided to go for distance now rather than time so not sure how long it took but it was quite slow. It is really windy and that made breathing a bit tricky but feel pretty pleased as a run to get back into it all.
Will try and do 2.5 miles on monday I think (she says, optimistically thinking Monday is a looong way away ).
great stuff everyone - wtf wheely! I've decided to do distance over time. I've got a 4 mile training run to do tomorrow. Hoping he weather is going to be ok as I'd prefer to runoutside, but looks like I'll be playing mindgames on the treadmill instead.
Hi all-well i`ve done week 1 .First and third time where ok but 2nd was a no go as i think i`m mildly asthmatic and forgot to take a puff of ventolin . Apart from that its great. I will continue for at least another 2 weeks though on week 1 as i haven`t yet managed to do all 8 repetitions ,the most i managed was 5 but i fast walked the others. Am still really pleased with myself though and if nothing else i now know i`m def asthmatic. my friend is a GP and told me if my peak flow dropped by 15 or more after exercise i was and it did by a lot more than that !.
I do need a better bra tho ! Have 34 g and struggling a little if anyone can recommend a bra that will stop them poking out my eyes ! x
did week 7 run 2 (with snow falling!!) with week 6 podcast and it made the 25 minues go much quicker as he talks the others through so you sort of know where you are.
Well done fakeblonde - I had my new m+s distance running bra on today - I'm only 34D though! It's a bit of a pain putting it over my head and fastening, but nothing moves afterwards! As furball says, maybe wearing 2 bras will help.
Wow, well done furball - in the snow!! I've just done 5.25 k along the canal - very very cold and the windchill was a bit of a factor - I had 3 hoodies on, and gloves (which my 11 year old then took from me as he'd forgotten his!).
Can't believe I can run so far (albeit slow & steady).
have been out this evening and have done week 5 run 2 - the 2 x 8 minute run one - with no problems at all. Hurrah! pretty dubious about the 20 minuter on Friday though....
Hi All ! Well done to those in Blighty who have managed to jog through all that snow . I have just been out in at least 6 foot of snow which we have here in SW London (I think I live quite near where you moved from MrsJC so you would know what its like ). Anyway, MrsJC - you'll be fine doing the 20 minute run if you did the 2x8 mins ok.. honest.
Actually we have had quite a lot of snow flurries but none of its settled but I have just been out in between showers and ran 2.5 miles in ..... drum roll... 21.25 minutes . I had measured a distance on mapmyrun and should have kept running but psychologically felt a need to stop at 2.5 miles. So... next run I think I'll map 2.75 miles and see how it goes.
wheelybug . I think we might have to bump you off to the 'proper' runners' thread. I don't think I can bear to ascertain just how slowly I am actually running - although I think it is faster than it was a couple of weeks ago.
I moved from Whitton/Twickenham. are you near there?
I'm a 34G too fakeblonde. I wear a sportsbra from Bravissimo (can't remember the make) and a crop top (aerobics type top) over the top. Keeps 'em strapped down nicely.
Haven't been since last Tues cause I got a terrible sore throat on Wed night and haven't felt better yet. Throat's bleeding now
I don't think they've have me MrsJC - I can't run any sort of 'real' distance (2.5 miles seems a looooong way to me but I think it would be a mere walk in the park for them ).
I think we've had conversations about Kingston Hospital before - I'm the other side of Kingston - New Malden.

Just done 28mins, hadnt been out since last Wednesday 'cos of Easter, so wasnt sure I'd do it, but it was fine. Despite bitter cold I was in bare sleeves and bright red face after 5 mins
Next phase is about speeding up a bit, so I can get a bit further in the same time. I do think I could tackle a 5km fun run now, if there was a fair wind.
I am an eternal couch potato and have never been fit in my life. But I have made a very serious decision that I am not prepared to enter my 40s like this (I have a few years yet, but better to start early).
I have lots of weight to lose, but that is not my only motivation. I actually want to be able to go for a run with my husband and for him not to look at me in amusement at my complete lack of stamina.
I have the right gear and last night I went out for the first time - leaving ds at home with my dh, who could not believe it! Not that he is wrong - I have never stuck to an exercise regime, so who could blame him.
It was blardy hard work and I only ran for short periods of time, but I stretched properly bfore and after, and I can walk today - whoohoo! And I went further than I thought I would - basically probably about 1 mile, I suppose, but without stopping, either walking or running slowly.
BUT I know I will need help and motivation and advice, from people who understands how hard this is, not my dh who was in the Army for 22 years and was proud he could still outrun the 18 year olds when he left. So here I am.
I will download the podcasts this evening - thank you very much, just what I need to give me an idea of what I should be aiming for, but any advice for a complete novice is very very welcome.
welcome spamm ! Good luck - Don't let your DH put you off. I don't my DH really thought I would stick with it as I'm a serial gym joiner and leaver but this programme seems different. I think its the fact that it only takes 30 mins 3 times a week so it doesn't take over your spare time. Eg. this morning I have 3.5 spare hours without dd. I went into Kingston shopping for 1 hour to get some pressies for people, have done a 25 minute run and still time to MN (haven't had a shower yet though so need to dash in a mo !).
Also, the podcast helps because it structures it. I had been planning on running from the time dd started pre-school in september but didn't know how to start. I think if I'd just gone out to run, I would have collapsed after about 5 mins and not done it again. This programme builds you up slowly and in manageable chunks. Even if you have to repeats ome of the weeks you know you are progressing.
I can't believe that in January, when I started each week was a real struggle and now at the end of March (when I've had a 3 week break) I am running 3 miles.
Another good motivator is signing up for Race for life if there's one near you. Its for women and not necessarily serious runners so it doesn't even matter if you don't run it all. A lot of us are doing it and for me its definitely keeping me going (and got me going again after a break)
You can do it - and we (and Rawb) can help . Gawd think I have been brainwashed....
Wow your doing really well furball. I seem to have one good run then one bad and I've got all out of a routine with kids/dh illness and easter etc. But I must get back at it - I still haven't managed a 25 minutes yet but I'm hoping once I do I'll start to believe I can run, and that I can do the 5km - I've got 6 weeks to go!!
Can I have a swearbox on the treadmill please? Went for a 5k this morning and really did not want to be there (it was raining outside, so couldn't go along the canal). Oy vay, my internal monologue was blue!! Made it though. Once I got to 2k it wasn't quite such hard work!
Why is it so difficult some days and so much better on others?!
but I did. Oh yes. 20 freaking minutes (week 5 run 3)
I am BESIDE myself with excitement. I also passed an audition to play in the professional orchestra - heard yesterday - and my lovely brother and nieces arrived from the UK yesterday, first time I've seen them in 18 months. so, all in all, a TOP week. Hurrah!
Ladies, am I allowed to rejoin please? I've done week one twice and not carried on due to my SPD playing up.
I really am determined to do this but am finding it hard to deal with emotionally (depression is bad at the moment so I need to exercise) as some weeks I just physically cannot run and feel a such failure. Do you think it'd be okay if I just walked on the bad weeks?
Could I join? I'd really like to start running again (well, lurching along for 20 mins max is what I am aspiring to) but am finding it really hard to start... where do you find the time? I WOH 4 days a week and DH is really busy with work atm (he's freelance) so I look after DS for most of the weekend - any spare time is usually spent doing laundry (bah) or housework...
Oddly enough, have just been asked by DH about buying trainers in prep for getting fit (if you knew my DH you would realise how strange this is). Must be something in the air. At least I now have someone to compete against
I went for my first wk 1 podcast shuffle run this evening and it was hard, but not impossible. I managed to do everything he said, and it was great.
I got home, crawled upstairs and jumped into ds' bath as he got out, which was nice. And I do not feel too bad at all. The important bit will probably be whether I can walk in the morning.
Wheely - I'm not ready to sign up for a Race for LIfe yet - I do not want to frighten myself before I get started - but I am keen to stick to this. It would be great to say to people "I run 6-8 miles a week", I am looking forward to when I get there!
Am planning to go out on Saturday afternoon, when dh gets back from his hobby.
But how do I know I am ready to go to Week 2 - I am sort of wondering whether I should do week 1 twice, while I get used to it. I am very overweight and the last thing I want to do is injur my knees or something like that and then it's all gone wrong. Any advice?
Which plan are you following Spamm? I found one on the Runners Worls website that looks doable. Their tip is to stop or slow down if you feel uncomfortable - you should be able to talk and shouldn't be in pain.
Spamm, go at the pace that suits you. I repeated a few of the weeks - especially the one that ended in a 20 min run. It's good psychologically to know that you are calling the shots - some days you just get psyched and know that it's time to move onto the next week's training.
When I started this a year ago I couldn't even do week 1. Today I ran 6k and am soooooo proud of myself (kernackered!). The calorie count on my heart monitor watch wasn't half bad either - waiting for the weight to come off, but I think it may go on as muscle. That's no bad thing, as muscle burns cals faster than fat
New trainers are a good motivator (I had my gait analysed as my foot twists over, so I've got some trainers that compensate for that) - I'm going to get some special socks from the local running shop. I killed my last pair by putting them into the tumbledrier! I couldn't believe the salesman last year, he told me 'you'll be doing 10 miles a week soon' - and so will we all.
Mrs Cusack, what's your instrument? I am a pianist (I teach piano when I'm not teaching dyslexic children). I find my grand piano fab to lean against to stretch out my calves! I'm also learning cello and violin. I play bass. No plans for viola or viol as yet.
Effie - I am trying out the podcasts - as that seems like the simplest form of advice for me - like having a running mate.
I will do my first 3 and see how I feel. If I feel that I need to repeat them, then I will.
Hopefully the weather will hold out so I can go out tomorrow afternoon, and I am looking forward to the the time change - I hate having to rush home and get out before it starts to get dark. I can only go out in the evenings during the week, as dh leaves for work early in the mornings, and I work full time.
have been out for week 6 run 1 - quite hard work but managed it, prob because only one rest day since teh 20 minuter and had been for an hour's walk in the afternoon too
am going to be a bit stuck over the next 4 weeks - away on Tuesday, won't be able to run whilst away I don't think, then over the next 3 will be working nearly every night. not quite sure what to do about it, just run at the weekends in the day I suppose. I don't want to lose momentum, so I will keep doing one of the days and see how I go and then restart trying to get up to 25-30 minutes when it's all over (except then it'll be even darker in the evenings!)
bramblebooks, mainly I play the clarinet but I also do shows and play sax/flute as well - for the show I'm in over the next few weeks will be playing soprano & alto saxes, clarinet and piccolo (v.strange). Am of your grand piano. also play piano/recorders and sing in an early music choir too. hopeless with stringed instruments though!
Oh the shame I have just been to buy a pair of trainers. You know how you all talk about running shops having a treadmill and they watch you run? Oh no! Not in my running shop. Nosireeee. No. I have to run up and down the HIGH STREET with my jeans rolled up to mid calf
Never mind. Tis done now and I'm £70 poorer! I've not run for a week and a half cause I've had a throat infection and felt rubbish but I went this morning. Just did 1.5 miles or so to get back in the swing of it.
Haven't read the thread but hope everyone's getting on ok. I've got about 7 weeks til my Race for Life now. Anyone else entered?
I did my 2nd 28 minuter today in glorious sunshine at 8am, now it is grey and raining hard so glad I did it. Hope you won't kick me off here in 2 weeks time when I'm due to finish the podcast.!
pinkspottywellies - next time go in your running gear with a number on your back so shoppers think you are in a race
Believe me Furball I didn't look like I was in a race!! I hadn't planned to go but there was a parking space outside the shop on the way home so I stopped. Just got home and said to DH 'Guess what I bought?' and he said 'trainers from the running shop'!!! Luckily he'd only seen me going in though!
Tried first run this morning - running 3 mins, walking 2 for 30 mins which seemed doable. Does that sound sensible? Am feeling knackered (went for a long walk with the buggy as well) but strangely cheerful
I think I'll have to try running the odd evening as well - I don;t work on Wednesdays, but have DS as DH is freelance and usually busy that day. Ho hum.
Effie, the podcast is linked in the OP. It's the MP3 version or you can find it on iTunes if you search for couch to 5k. It's by Rob Ullrey. If you've been doing 3 mins already you won't need to start at week 1. The programme is outlined on coolrunning.com
Oh and did I mention I had to take my shoes andsocks off and roll up my jeans? Luckily (and this doesn't happen very often) my legs were fuzz free and my toenails were painted a lovely shade of raspberry. But be warned runners!
i still have a throat/chst infection and am coughing too much to do anything. have to see GP on weds to confirm pregnancy and get the ok to carry on running. as soon as i stop coughing.
i will take part in race for life even if i cant run it, i will walk/jog it this year.
I'm going to do the RFL in May - only 6 weeks to go and I'm still on week 7 - so I'm hoping I'll be able to do 5km by then. But when I run on the treadmill I run at 8.5km/hr so it will actually take me at least 35 minutes to do 5km. So I will need to keep going past week 9 and then some
pinkspottiewellies that made me laugh. I had exactly the same treatment at fab running shop in newcastle, however they have a big warehouse at back of shop so ran around there with my jeans rolled up. I was quite shicked when they told me to take off my socks and roll jeans up and you could plait the hair on my legs at the minute !
