What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect grin

Celery - I use gel insoles after having problems with my achilles. You may find them helpful for heel pain.

Hope it improves soon.

A very, very long time since I have been here blush. Not running regularly right now due to similar problem to Celery. Having said that I am planning to venture out and take part in a New Years Eve 5km (very slowly around the centre of Viennagrin).

Celery - try thesewww.yoursole.co.uk/index.html I have found a real improvement with my plantar f. problem

I got mine from my local sports shop Celery - I have the half insoles, a slight raise in my left shoe and an arch support in my right.

<lol - think I could do with a visit to the podiatrist too>

I have not run for two months blush coz it's so cold but I'm going to get back into it to get fit for the adventure races that will be starting again in march.

I really need support to get the motivation to start running again after I've lapsed, so could do with help here!

Also, after a very tough adventure race in september (3 hrs non-stop running, ouch!) I got bad knees every time I ran for more than 30 minutes, I'm hoping that the time off has allowed for recovery!

Yes the old trainers gave me awful blisters and after breaking them in for 6months I gave up. Problem is I haven't run further than 5k in the new ones and even my old ones were ok blister wise up to 6k. I am concerned I will develop a huge hole in my foot at the halfway point.

Right, I am going to motivate myself to go for a run tomorrow (can't today, all booked up)

Any other single mums out there running? If so, how do you fit it in? Mostly the only way I have been able to do it without a babysitter is to take DS along on his bike hmm before school or run in my lunch break, so it's easy to find some excuse not to.

Good luck for tomorrow stripeyknickers! (love the name by the way!)

Minum - you'll get there by June no probs! Are you starting from nothing or do you run alredy?

I went running yesterday fro the first time for a couple of weeks. I only did 20mins, but better than nohing. I am planning a 10k in March and have done myself a schedule, so I'm on my way again!

I ran a 5km in 2001, but have done very little since then. DS1 is very unfit, and needs to improve to get back into the first team for rugby, so I'm incentiviced for me and him. I'm starting with half hour stints, part running, part walking. Am I right in thinking I should be able to run 10km in less than an hour when I'm fit?
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Saggarmakersbottomknocker on Sun 30-Dec-07 10:43:18
Hi Minum. The target of 10k in an hour, for me, is achievable with hard work. For other people it seems to be a walk (run!) in the park hmm. I'm not a natural runner though, but I enjoy it and that's the main thing I suppose.....and I'm quite old so I use that as an excuse.

How old is ds1 - are you going out together?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Minum on Sun 30-Dec-07 11:49:23
Hes 13 - yes we are going together, at the moment I'm a bit fitter than him, but I think he'll take over me, especially when he gets back to sports training

can anyone help - I started running a little while back - went to great small sports shop and went on a treadmil thing for them to help me choose the right trainers for my footfall (not sure if this was sales bs or not) However - when I go running in these trainers I get pins and needles in my right foot within about 20 minutes it is bearable but probably not right. is it the trainers or me that is wonky?

(sorry to hijack the thread!)
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By Saggarmakersbottomknocker on Sun 30-Dec-07 12:18:37
What size did you get Jingly? They ususally recommend a maybe a half or full size bigger for runners. Are you doing them up too tight? Are you running the same route all the time - one way round the park for example? - sometimes the constant one way camber of the path can affect your footfall.

I get pins and needles in my right foot after about 4 miles sometimes. It usually passes off after a while - I think run a bit heavier on that leg generally.

Hello ladies!

I am now 20 weeks pregnant and have very recently stopped running. <lazy> I shall be power-walking instead twice a week from the 7th Jan when DCs are back at sch/pre-sch.

Baby due in May - I really don't know whether I'll be running again by the end of the year. I am missing it, so would like to, but on the other hand I don't want to do too much to soon either and risk long-term damage. And heavy b/f norks will probably defeat even the best sports bra!

Good luck to everyone else - I'll be keeping my eye on all your races this year. grin

Well done SKSS smile Fab time.

Jofeb04 have a look at the Race for Life link in the OP. They'll have a run/walk programme on there somewhere. I didn't start with a programme - I had a measured mile out and back route from home. I went out and ran as much of it as I could, walked a bit and ran again but not timed like the programmes generally are. <the first time out I thought I was going to die> I just kept running that bit further and walking that bit less until I ran all the way. Then increased distance bit by bit but didn't incorporate a walk again. Although I do now though sometimes when I increase my distance.

Just wanted to say Hi, I'm still out here, still running although hardly ever get to Mumsnet these days.

In fact, it's so long since I posted that most of you won't even recognise the name (special hi to Gizmo, SMBK, Popsycal, LapsedRunner et al)

I'm one term into a GTP course to teach Secondary Science so any spare time hmm is spent running rather than on my PC, and the little time I have seems to be spent searching for exciting ways of teaching radioactivity to Year 10... No, we're not allowed to get them to do practicals wink

Some good efforts going on though, stick at it and don't let your brain kid you that you need to stop - you could take a leaf out of Paula's book and have a mantra - she used to count up to 20 over and over but at New York it was 'I love you Isla' which kept her focussed.

Mine is 'I can and I will', dd (8) has 'Kill the Hill' when out on our bikes.

I've entered Rough N Tumble in 2 weeks time, just over 10 miles of mud and hills followed by stunning cakes. Similarly Terminator in Feb, slightly longer; they pride themselves on the fact that their T-shirts are 'earned not given' then I've got Reading Half in early March.

Not entered FLM this time for obvious reasons but, Dannie, am happy to try to be a motivator for you as have done it twice before.

I've saved the thread so I'll be able to come back a little more frequently, I hope.

Remember, no matter how bad you feel & how awful the weather, you'll always come back smiling (if nothing else you can be smug that you've made the effort )

Does anyone here know if you are allowed to start a running programme while pregant? I am planning on joining a local group next week - will be running twice a week, but building up slowly, running for a minute walking for a minute the first time out then gradually increasing but i am also ttc no 2 and am not sure if i would be allowed to keep up the running if, for example, i found out i was pregnant in a fortnights time.

At the moment i am pretty unfit, i walk a lot but have been really looking forward to starting runnning just to get some proper exercise again.

Wow, that was very spooky !

Every time I read Going on a Bear hunt to my gd it reminds me of the swishy swashy race.

Tartan, a friend of mine has recently had her first baby; she ran through her first trimester, then ran/walked to keep her heart rate low, then finally did brisk walking, although she kept this up until past her due date and was back out yesterday complete with Baby Bjorn sling. Every little helps, get out the door and have a go, there's always an excuse not to !

I run in the gym on the treadmill as I can only go when the children are in bed and DH is home - I am not running round here alone in the dark!

I've increased my fitness since joining the gym in May, I can now do 5km in half an hour and I can plod jog for an hour, but not very quickly.

I have been a right lazy moo over the last month, so am going to get back into my routine and get going again regularly. My main dilemma is that DH (military) goes away again soon, so I don't know how I am going to get to the gym, I might need to grovel to my friend to babysit a couple of times a week!

quick question - does anyone run in MBT's or Earth trainers?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Twink on Mon 31-Dec-07 17:30:42
I occasionally jog in MBTs, chasing kids etc but don't run in them. I don't know anyone who does tbh, even one of our gym staff who wears them for everything else swops to running shoes when she's running with clients.

Following a big run yesterday, I did 15 mins on the Summit Trainer followed by sprint intervals on the treadmill at the gym. It's got this great setting where you set your walk/jog recovery speed and your run time and you can toggle between the 2 so when you're approaching death it's easy to slow down quickly. The only downside is the noise it makes when it's speeding up, everyone stares blush

So glad to see this thread. I ran until about 22 weeks but had to stop when the bump felt too uncomfortable. DS is now nearly 12m. I got back into it gradually but since the end of November have had a cold then a chest infection. I felt well enough to start again but within 2 weeks I came down with a cold that is lingering but beginning to think about moving on angry. I guess being asthmatic I might take a bit longer to recover but it's not normally a big problem as I have my inhaler. Any tips for starting again after a run of upper respiratory tract infections?

Best of luck and applause to all those getting out there. I am full of admiration for all of you.

Hi! Can I join? I did the GNR in 2004 when we had just conceived dd...and have never really got back into it since. I really MISS the stress relief and the thinking time and am determined that 2008 is the year I dust off my trainers and get back into it! Am thinking a lovely gentle couple of 5k runs to get me back into it and then maybe a couple of 10k's later in the year...
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By 43Today on Tue 01-Jan-08 20:36:04
Happy New Year everyone! Can i join? I started running Easter 2006 and gradually built up to racing last year - have done 3 10ks and one half mara.

Half Mara was in Nov and haven't really run properly since then cos i knackered a knee, but was pleased with my time of 1:57. I've worked back up to 30 mins gentle running without recurrence of knee pain. I understand that you need to strengthen other muscles in order to support knee, so have been working on quads and glutes.. v boring!

i was supposed to do a 10k yesterday (Ely 10k) but skipped it cos haven't trained enough - i intend to enter another for end of Jan hopefully and do it!

I'm a single mum too and have to do most of my training during the day. I go to a running club once a week if i can get a babysitter and really enjoy the chance for a chat as well as the exercise..

Let's see how motivated we can keep ourselves in 2008!
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By CurrantBun on Tue 01-Jan-08 21:07:53
Looks like I may find the motivation I need here! Drew up my FLM training schedule yesterday. I have run it three times before and never missed a single session (apart from in 2006 due to an injury) so I know I have the self-discipline if I put my mind to it.

This year it's going to be harder because I have DS. I know I'll find the prospect of a 3-hour training run that much harder because it will mean time away from him. It will also mean that DH will have to be even more supportive than in the past. He's usually pretty good but does get fed up with our lives revolving around my training schedule. I think the solution will be to find creative ways to fit in the training - am already thinking of running home from work when the midweek runs get longer. There's no getting round the long Sunday run though - DH will just have to grin and bear it grin

Am not convinced that I can better my best marathon time of 3:23 on just 4 runs a week (which is realistically all I can fit in) but I'll give it my best shot. If I can run 3:30 on the training I'm able to do I'll be pretty happy with that.

Training started off well - postponed the run I'd planned for today to tomorrow! It's just so deserted out today that I was a little nervous about heading out in the dark - and New Year's Day is just made for laying on the sofa!

Welcome to PD, 43T & CB (v jealous of your FLM time, one day I might go sub 3.30..)

CB, Runnersworld had a training plan for 3 focussed sessions per week plus cross training which a friend who's a mum of 3 used and got a PB (and she's a good runner like you). I'll see if I can find it and post the link.

I went out first thing this morning with a friend from running club - the only people we met were dog-walkers and other runners, did over 4 miles so pleased with myself.

Hi, need to shift about 3 stone and have tried al sorts (very half heartedly!) Gym membershipo runs out mid Jan and I'm not renewing as only go once or twice a week. Started running for 1st time ever beg of november, doing about 3 - 4 km in about 30 - 50 mins, not sure how good/bad/avge that is. There were a few periods of walking on way! Did 3 or 4 times a week throughout November thenb stopped at beg December as too busy hmm and it was very windy! Been out on Sat and Sunday morning but again not since! Wld like to hear from some more who are new to it as you all sound like seasoned runners! My realistic aim is the 5 mile children's cancer run in May with my 9 yr old daughter!

Theresa, I am definately not a seasoned runner. I started from scratch last July, and built up to running 3 miles, 3 or 4 times a week, but injured my foot the beginning of December, so kind of feel like I'm back to square one again already. Foot still not fantastic, so I'm taking it very easy. I went out last night for a gently walk/run and most of it was walking, but it still felt good to be out. I lost 2 and a half stone last year, by the way, and the running definately played a big part in that!

Hi Thresea. You sound like you are well on your way to doing that 5 miler in May. Keep up the good work. You will learn to ignore the weather eventually. Wind is no excuse... I'm a seasoned runner in that I've been keeping fit this way for maybe 8 or 9 years now. I can't believe I've stuck at it that long! All the mums who started out with me, there were about 6 of us, have fallen by the wayside. But if seasoned means speedy then, no that's not me. I'm getting slower each year lol.

OK, I've been lurking on here for a few days and I am ready to commit...

I am keen to get fitter. Do imtermediate level pilates which has helped a bit and live at the top of a MAHOOSIVE hill so walking has improved fitness - but still can't really run. I want to build up to a couple of k's to start with, but can prob only manage twice a week max until the lighter evenings come around.

Thinking of doing RFL in the summer (for my mum, died of bowel cancer in 1999). But will see how I go.
Any tips gladly received!

Hi, I'd like to join in too. Have been running periodically for a year or so now but haven't been out much recently except for a couple of 3 mile runs before Christmas. My goal this year is to run regularly outdoors each week and make better use of my gym membership until it expires in a few months. Not easy finding the time with 3 dcs but I know how much better I feel when I'm in a good exercise routine. Also want to get out of my running comfort zone (3 to 4 miles) and train for a 10k this year.

I'm hoping to do the FLM in April (have a place but knees currently playing up....) - I have done it before but that was before children!

Currently running fo up to 1 hour 20 - rather concerned that this would only get me about one quarter if the way round at current speeds......

Thanks everyone. As my dc's are both at school full time and I only work on Mondays and Tuesdays I'll have no excuse for not getting right back into it next week, going to be abit of a prob before then, may try for one at weekend. I'm a morning person so like to get it out of the way so dont do evening runs at moment!

Hi,
No running here, 1 cold after another after moving house and having new windows fitted during a very cold snap!
I shall lurk for a while and feel motivated by everyone else's running stories until I can get pushing that pram again!

Hello all - I haven't been on here in absolutely yonks.

I started running 2 years ago when dd2 was 6 months old, got hooked and joined a running club, did some 10ks, a half marathon and then FLM in 2007. Then inevitably had a bit of a slump and have only run half-heartedly since then. Still, got myself out yesterday for 5.5 miles in my (rather long) lunchbreak! And hoping to keep things ticking over this year. Resolution - to run 2-3 times per week.

Very impressed by anyone running in pregnancy. Personally I was too busy throwing up for the first 3 months to do anything! Maybe next time things will be different!!

Hello. Is this the Mumsnet Running Club? I haven't posted before but was inspired by all your running stories. Not had much running time since before Christmas, so am a crap runner at the moment. However, I did run the Christmas Pudding Run on boxing day (and did I feel like a Christmas Pudding).

With 2 ds's I sometimes struggle to get out the door - but when I do go out - oh the freedom!

Should go out tonight but its snowing!

I went out today! despite the freezing cold, but luckily no frost here. did 35 mins and leg started hurting again - grr! I must admit I haven't been doing my leg exercises at all recently so maybe that's the problem.

Those who are hoping to lose weight and are beginning running might be inspired by a friend of mine, who weighed 18 stone in April. I wrote her a fitness programme that included running, as part of my personal trainer course, and she has lost almost 4 stone - without dieting!! she put in so much effort it was fantastic. As well as the running (went from walking 3mins/jogging 1min to now running for 45 mins without stopping) she has used gym cardio equipment and done some weight training. She also went to the gp for healthy eating guidlines, and has stuck to these pretty well. However I think the flexibility of the running has meant she can take more exercise at convenient times.

Has anyone else got knee trouble and is trying to deal with it? I'd be interested to hear about any exercises you do - I've been doing the clam (for the gluteus medius) and leg raises (for the quads).

Anyway keep on with the new year resolutions..

Have signed up for a 10k at knebworth in Feb, at the moment 6k kills me, but I have 7 weeks so anything is achievable.

Doing this so that the 6k at the end of my triathlon is easier than last year, took me 37mins sad

have done two 3 miles in the last week have training plan, just need o put the miles in.

Hi, not been on here for a while as I haven't been out for a while. Had good intentions to run over christmas but didn't manage. I've also just found out I'm pregnant again which is cool. So do I keep running? It should be ok shouldn't it? For about the past 2 months I'd only been going out once a week but then haven't run for 4 weeks. Will I ok to run? Do you think I should tell the person I run with just in case? Will only be going out once a week probably and we don't go too fast.

congrats debinscots! I have no idea to be honest, but I should think if you listen to your body and take it easy, it should be okay??

We chickened out of running in the cold, and are going out tommorrow instead!

I've just decided to run the Race for Life this year. I walked it in 2006 when I was pregnant with dd but I need your help! I have never run before blush Where do I start? I thought I could decide on a route and run as much as I can but walk when I need to and see how I improve, then increase the distance. Is this a rubbish idea?!

I ran throughout my 2nd pregnancy, last run was 4 miles the day before my contractions started. From my experience I'd strongly recommend keeping on running through pregnancy for as long as it feels OK. Because of the running, I felt much fitter than in my 1st pg, put on less weight, never got to the stage of feeling I could do nothing but waddle (hated that first time round...). Knees and joints were fine, pelvic floor stayed intact, had a healthy size baby bang on time and was back running again 2 weeks after giving birth! Labour was so much easier and quicker too (even taking into account that it was a 2nd baby). I'd say keep going debs! smile

run, walk, run is a great way to start pinkspottywellies. See if you can get hold of a copy of Runner's World. It's usually about now that they print their beginner's schedule (for first time London marathon runners) and you could adapt that schedule to suit your needs etc.
Good luck and Enjoy!

hi everyone. I'm just looking up some events to get me out there. I'm thinking of maybe a half marathon in march or April - maybe Fleet. I'm also thinking I might do something shorter as part of my training - maybe a 10k in Feb? anyone in the SE (I'm sw london) fancy joining me?

hi again. just found a great website - one that I had coveted some time ago - it combines measuring your runs with a log book - allows you to work out all sorts of stats. You have to pay but you can get a month's free trial to start off with. think I'll give it a go. good run guide

thanks Volodya, I will keep going as long as it feels ok, I had got myself so much fitter than I'd been for ages so it would be good to keep the fitness levels at least ok while I'lm pregnant. Not sure about the shorter labour thing though, last time my whole labour was only about 4 hours so it can't get much shorter. The other reason to keep going is that before my last pregnancy my blood pressure was slightly on the high side of normal and got very very high at the end of the pregnancy (hence the fast labour apparently). I don't know for sure what it is now but I'm sure its lower than it was last time so hopefully staying fit might help it not go up so much.

Been out again today - to test the interval training MP3 we've made - and I did it grin but had real pain in my shin bone - I had stretched before, and its a bone pain, not a muscle one - anyone else had this?
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By hatwoman on Sat 05-Jan-08 17:26:26
an interval training MP3 - do explain. I have tried and failed to do interval training - just can't be doing with it - is this a trick worth learning?

can't help you on the bone pain - is it shin splints? although, I think that's a bit of a daft question - in that I think "shin splints" is not really a technical diagnosis - rather it's a way of saying "pain in the shin". Anyway have a look on runnersworld you might find something of help

HW - thanks for link - will read thoroughly tonight

I'm following a training plan that I downloaded - on week one you run for 60secs, then walk for 90secs, for 20 mins in total. So DH bought some MP3 cutting sofware, searched for tracks with either walking or running in the title (Walking on the Moon, Keep on Running etc etc), and put a 60 second clip of "running" music, followed by 90 sec of "walking" music, with a 3 second clip of Bowie saying "changes" in between each one! Acts as a timer and keeps me motivated.

Debi, I ran in my pregnancy but not in the first trimester as I felt too awful (on a drip for throwing up too much, so not just normal morning sickness). There is a book written by Runner's World 'Runner's World Guide to Running and Pregnancy: How to Stay Fit, Keep Safe, and Have a Healthy Baby by Chris Lundgren ', I found this fairly useful although it again covers info that is in other pregnancy books. My GP was fine with me running as long as I wanted too, as was my MW but the locum MW I had was shocked that I was doing normal aqua-aerobics and not antenatal so I never told her! I stopped at about 7 1/2 months because that was right for me.
Just listen to your body and do whatever feels right for you!

Minum - I'm liking your MP3 tracks - sounds fab. You could make money from that!..

Agree with hat re shin splints. Usual suspects are needing new shoes, running on a hard surface or doing too much too soon. Take care!

I went out today - just 5k and very slow as it was decidedly iffy under foot. Have a Bodytone class tomorrow and then out again Wednesday hopefully. Got on the scales and nned to lose 10lbs.

I got out last night, and wore my new Earth trainers, just to see how they felt. Amazingly, for the first time in over a month, I had no foot pain, and was able to run more than walk. I know these shoes ( negative heel technology ) aren't running specific shoes, although the blurb from Earth says you can run in them, I'm sure if I went into a running shop and told them I was running in them, they would be horrified. However, I don't care. They are enabling me to run without pain, so for the time being atleast, this is what I am going to wear! It just felt so good to run again, I've really missed it.

I managed about 2.5 miles on Sunday morning. First run since I was ill and I was dreading it. But no problems at all! No coughing or breathing problems, no athsma. But I was so tired the rest of the day. But it's a start.

I've not heard of Earth trainers celery.

ran 2k on sun. Nearly ran it all (and our area is v hilly) and was surprised by how resaonable I felt. Can't say I enjoyed it really, but do feel smug for doing it. Pilates tonight (been doing this for ages), and will try for another 2K later in the week.

Bonjouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuur!

I am back!

Well.
Sort of.

I have been very poorly......my dodgy shins/kness etc were actually fibromyalgia which is a chronic pain condition which I will always have......BUT. Gentle exercise, gradually built up has been shown to really help.

So
I am going to do a 10K at the end of March.

I will read your thread properly later. But hello to my old buddies and hello to those new runners too

I will not be silently competitive this time

I will run on Saturday

Sneaks in again to say hello - failed to run over the weekend due to inexcusable inertia and laziness. Snuck out for half an hour on Monday. Yesterday was club night, but I bunked off to give blood, which is at least a good excuse. Must, must, must get myself out at lunchtime today.

Anyone else struggling with willpower?

Hello all! Hi Pidge - we "met" before on a previous thread, when I was pregnant and having to ease off the running a bit.

How did you do at FLM 2007? It was a very warm day, wasn't it? Remember watching it on TV and thinking that if there was going to be a year I couldn't run it, I'd chosen well!

Am struggling a bit with willpower to be honest. Started FLM training last week but as I'm nowhere near as fit as I was when I started training for FLM 2006, I'm pretty sure there's no way I'm going to get anywhere near my PB. I'm finding it hard to commit to such time-consuming training (at the expense of time with DS, who's now 10 months) when I'm unlikely to run a decent time. Thinking of deferring but may possibly want to try for baby no. 2 and 2009 is the last time I could use my GFA place.

Dilemmas ... I thought I'd st
