My 13 yr old had planter facilitus - in a lot of pain - we got it fixed by a podiatrist very quickly who used ultra sound. He also wears heel gel pads in his shoes and trainers now, and it hasnt reoccured.

I have a foot injury - from researching it seems like mild plantar fasciitis. Obviously I'm keen to solve the problem before it develops into something serious. Anyone have any experience of this? I am unable to run now for more than 2 minutes without pain. Is it worth going to a running gait analysis place? This would be a trek for me, as I live on the isle of wight and would have to travel to the mainland.

Nothing since 16th sad. Been ill with chest infection and even a brisk run brings out the hacking cough. But will be back asap with renewed vigour and an MP3 player - hurray!

Hi dinny - welcome back. smile

So - who's been out over Christmas then?

I've been sadly lacking in the exercise department this last two weeks and boy can I tell. Dodgy hip and bad back driving be mad - ironically I have so many more aches and pains when I'm not running.

Anyway - down to business - I've done a 25 minute plod today and hope to go again on Sunday.

Going to change from my Christmas name now and start a new thread I think ready for the New Year.

I'd really like to join/rejoin this threda, if that's OK? I am trying to run 3-5 miles 6 x a week, and have been enjoying it (once ger over the shock of the cold!) my problem is staying motivated if I miss a session (have had to miss today due to business at work) - any hints?

some amazingly inspiring runners on this thread!

CurrantBun I'm awed by your time! My children are bigger (9, 7 and 4) and I'm more comfortable with the training. DD is in the school cross-country squad and she and DS1 do the childrens' races when I race, but I'm not sure yet whether anyone's realised how much time the marathon training will take up soon. as someone who would dearly love to be an hour slower than you, I'm not sure I can offer much motivation, though!

Just found this thread. I have a place for FLM for 2008 but haven't decided yet whether I will do it. I've run FLM three times before, 2004, 2005 and 2006, but missed this year because I'd just had DS. Am back running (started again 6 weeks after C-section) and run around 25 miles a week at the moment (pre-pregnancy I averaged around 30 unless training for the marathon).

I'd love to do FLM again but the training is very time-consuming and I'm just not sure that I want to spend lots of time away from DS. I ran 3:23 last time and I find the thought of not improving on that demotivating. At the moment my longest run is around 10-12 miles but during marathon training it increases up to 20 miles which at a training pace, takes around 3 hours.

Will decide after Christmas but at the moment, although I love running, I don't feel as dedicated to the training or as motivated as I've done for my last three marathons.

If anyone would like to motivate me, feel free! I can use any help I can get!

Hi pendulum. I not surprised you are taking it easy after your surgery. I started running again 9 weeks after dd but hadn't had a cs...I tried before and thought my undercarriage was going to drop off grin I had a forceps delivery and lots of stitches so needed the recovery time too. I went to the gym from 3 weeks onwards, but just wiggled slowly on the cross trainer!

Hello - welcome. smile

I think lots of us are lurking at the moment - I certainly am - trying to find the time and the motivation to get out. I'm unlikely to find it before Christmas though so aim to start anew with a short jog on Boxing Day.

ooh hello, just found this thread. I haven't been running for nearly a year because of DD2 who is 11 weeks and currently sucking my nipple off! Before that I was doing approx 15 miles p.w. and thinking about doing some races (only started running 3 years ago).

I'm planning to head out again in January (had CS and further surgery so ned to take it slowly). Mind if I lurk about here for inspiration in the meantime?

Ok I lied, prob won't get out this week for a run at all. Me and the person I run with after work are both feeling a bit rough and tired after alst nights christmas meal so we can't be arsed going. Yes I know thats a rubbish excuse.

Me too debithescot. Do you actually practice running 26 miles? I mean.... run that distance once a week for a while? It staggers me to even contemplate it....

I managed just under 5 miles on Sunday and itr was fine and i'm inordinately pleased with myself grin but that's only less than 1/5 of a marathon.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By DebitheScot on Thu 13-Dec-07 13:00:14
huge respect for anyone doing a marathon. Its not the marathon itself that makes me feel daunted but the training for it. I just don't know how you have the time to go out running for hours and hours to train.

I'm still managing to get out once or twice a week, did 4.5 miles on Friday which was most I've done for a while. Haven't been out since though due to a cold but will try to go tomorrow. OUt for work christmas do tonight so will need to run to work that off.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Dannie on Tue 11-Dec-07 14:47:23
"Train for such a huge distance?" er, I haven't yet! I've only been running about three years, I did a half marathon in March last year, which was a steady three-month build-up after Christmas, just adding a bit each week. If I'm not training for a specific distance, I just plod around the park. Just looking at the later parts of the programme make me feel tired at the moment. Training at Christmas is easy, though: 1. Close door on inlaws. 2. Run away fast. And loads of people around to watch the kids.

dannie - wow! Not me for sure. Well not just yet anyway grin

Can I just ask, how long has it taken you to train for such a huge distance. It's taken me about a year to build up slowly to approx 5 miles. I guess I didn't have a specific aim in mind though.

Dannie, I am sure there will be people on here running the London Marathon, because I remember a few threads on here leading up to it last year. Just keep on bumping this, particularly at peak times, and you may find someone. Good luck with your training...and well done on getting a place! Are you running for a charity??

Not that I'm saying you have to btw...just being nosy!

Any time in mind??

I've haven't tackled a marathon yet, but have always looked at my times for shorter distances and thought that I would aim at sub 5 hours and take it from there.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Dannie on Sun 09-Dec-07 12:48:46
Are there any other MNers with a place in the FLM? I haven't been on here in ages, but I could really do with a virtual training partner. Local running club is really nice, but they go out at times that make perfect sense for people with no children.

I run in the dark (sorry....haven't been on this thread or months...very neglectful of me!). I stick yo pavements, wear a jacket and try and keep to areas where there is plenty of traffic, if not pedestrians. I don't do too late (not usually after 6 30, so feel fairly safe on my own.

Did my best ever 5 mile time about 10 days ago....37 minutes bang on! However have had a few bugs since then so only managed one 3 miler since then. I have a big night out planned tomorrow night, so think my weekend run will be Sunday!

Good luck all those planning santa runs.

I don't think I would have the motivation to get out on my own on a cold, wet and windy night, but it's so much easier if you have someone to run with. I actually don't mind the wind so much, but hate the rain! We were out last night in 25mph winds, but I think I might draw the line at the 40mph winds forecast for this weekend.

I run after dark - but with a friend and on the main roads. I wear a hi-visibilty vest thingy after a close call a couple of years ago with an crap inconsiderate driver. I don't mind the rain either but don't like it windy.

You can find races on Runners World rebel but I don't think there are many 5ks until Spring.

Hello. Last time I ventured on here I was shamed by the paltry distances I was managing compared to you lot blush. But I regularly manage about 4miles now so a bit more respectable.

I just wanted to know whether everyone carries on running whatever the weather? I've been trying to carry on regardless and although I can cope with rain, I really struggle with strongish winds (makes it so hard) and I find that very cold dry (or hot) weather makes my athsma worse. Is it normal to let up a bit on the winter?

I've been struggling too since I sprained my ankle and missed my half marathon.

Only getting out twice a week at the most and running for aabout 30 mins. I lost so much fitness when I wasn't running

So much harder to fit running in now it isn't light until about 8.30, and is too dark to run by 3.30

Never mind. I was planning to do a 10 mile race in the middle of december, but not sure I will make it. However there is a 6k race on the same day even closer to home. Only problem is I have to wear a SANTA suit blush What do you think? grin

Treadmill sounds great Celery - well done you for keeping motivated.

I'm sort of getting out but struggling a bit. My achilles is playing up and the inside of my knee on the same leg is niggling but not when I run, just when I've been on my feet all day. I really need new shoes both for running and for work, but the pennies are a bit tight at the moment.

So just plodding slowly at the moment but hoping for better things in the new year smile

.....and judging by the state of my legs <cellulite abounds> in the mirror in Next today it can't come soon enough.

Hi everyone,

I had a quiet few weeks with the running, never stopped completely, but sick kids/me etc meant I was only getting out once or twice a week. This week, I finally found someone who wants to go out regularly with me. He is starting at the very beginning, so it will be a little while before we can run properly together, but he is very keen, so I am delighted. It is so motivational, especially in the winter weather!

I have also got a treadmill, in the garage, and I have to say I love it. It means I can run now when my husband is away (which is quite a lot ). I take the baby monitor out there in the evening and I can do a quick half an hour. It's not as much fun as running outside, but it keeps my fitness levels up.

Hi Wallace, my race went really well. I knocked over 5 mins off my time from 3 weeks ago. It was a really good race, all off road (so was expecting a slow time) which I preferred to running on road. My official time was 53:30 and I came 65th out of 195 women! I was very shocked at my time and very chuffed too.

I'm not in Scotland no. Living in Hampshire at the moment, been here 4 years but hoping to get back to Scotland next year.

I've got the bug for doing races now and want to keep doing them (mind you it could get expensive, some of the entry fees aren't cheap) but we also want to start trying for another baby. Can't really do both I don't think.

So impressed that I got in under the hour esp as I am still full of the cold and hadn't done much for 2 weeks.

It was hard work but not too bad. It being 2 laps was actually ok. I thought it'd be horrid but it was actually ok, in some ways it was good to know what was coming and there was a couple of points where it didn't seem that long since we'd been there before. The race was a triangle so every time we turned onto the next side I ticked off another 1/6 of it. The end was up a short but steep hill and that was really hard but I hung on mainly due to my stronger friend who ran it all at my pace just to help me. I was so happy when I saw the car at the end with the clock on its roof and it said 58 mins. Couldn't believe it! I'm still buzzing smile smile smile smile smile

Hello everyone! I've been absent too because I'm pregnant again. Which conveniently seems to be the current topic!

Despite Augusts m/c, I was going to continue running a gentle 2-3k twice a week but I currently feel so sick that getting the DCs to school is as much as I can manage. When the sickness passes I may well feel too large to run but will power walk instead. I'll be gutted to lose all my newly found fitness!

My GP said it was OK to run until the bump was being shaken and not to get out of breath.

Supposed to be running cancer 10k tomorrow blush but giving my number to someone else now. Feeling VERY fat and unfit just now tho.

To queries re. running whilst pregnant. I sought a LOT of medical opinions re. this one and was told IS safe as long as keep heartbeat below 140. Nevertheless I mc preg 1 two days after doing a long run (was training for a marathon so was 18 miles!!!) may be unconnected but I still wonder.

pg no 2 I did run for the first trimester and did up to 10 miles very slowly but I developed what I though was a groin strain and went I went to see a physio was told it was SPD. I ended up on crutches and unable to walk by about 24 weeks. Again don't know if the running made me more likely to get SPD or if I would have got it anyway.

Need to catch up on all the posts and who is new etc

sfxmum,

I am very interested in your query too. I used to run regularly and gave it up for around 10 weeks when discovered I was pregnant.

I have started to do a little again, ca 3/4 K. I drink lots of cool H2O before, during and after running. Do not do much of an incline or speed (use treadmill). I don't know when I'll give up and walk and swim instead. Am on the lookout for some sort of belly support.

Are you interested for the future or is it relevant now?

Hi, not been on here for a while, work has been very busy and never seem to have time anymore. Still getting out at least twice a week for a decent run and then last night I took running club at school and did the session with them. Some horrible acceleration things (Jog ~50 m, stride ~50m, sprint ~ 50m, walk ~100m then do it again. 8 times in total) and then a couple of laps of the school which is about 2k total.
I'm thinking I'm nearly ready for the 10k next Sunday, did 5.25 miles in 50 mins on Sunday but I don't know if I'll get out for a run again this week. We've got a very busy weekend. Then I'm not sure what I should do next week, I don't want to do too much and end up being tired.

Hana where do you live? There's a 10K that I'm hoping to do at Loseley house near Guildford on Sunday 4th November. Looks like a good one with some of it on tracks and in nice countryside.

Hi everyone,

I am now running for 30 minutes - started middle of July, able to run for 2 minutes. So, I really feel like I've finally "made it". However, I'm feeling very run down at the moment, so only managing about twice a week, and Doublebluff - you are so right about the dark evenings and mornings - they've come as a bit of shock! Really hoping to get motivated, manage to avoid winter bugs and colds and get out 3 times a week over the winter.

\AAAgghhhh I cannot get motivated at alll.
It is wet and dark and I am tired and hungry and it is too late to go out for a run and it is too dark to get up early and and and....

Oh no Wallace . Definitely worth going to docs, they may be able to give you some decent anti-imflamms to ease it. Hope it all gets sorted for you soon.

BAd luck Wallace. MAybe some physio would help, you don't want to run on it if it is not right.
I am so unprepared for my half, have been to a boozy wedding yesterday and vegged al day today, not really good preparation!

My half marathon is in 2 weeks, but I sprained my ankle last Sunday running after ds2.

It is still not right, and I don't know whther to go out running or not. I guess I should go to doc/physio and see what they say...

anyone else who did the Cancer Research 10k at Hampton Court? First 10k I've done in a long time and v happy that I finished and had a good run! Was v flat and uninspiring running - apart from a small stretch along the Thames Path that was pretty.
am looking for another 10k before Christmas, any ideas on where I'd find one? Have googled, but not much luck there.

I finally managed my 5 today!!

Very slow (53 minutes) blush but not been out since last weekend when I did 4.5 so 'tis OK I think.

Is anyone doing the GNR tomorrow?

Right then we will both do it regardless of times, if we finish then we have achieved.
I ran 7 miles yesterday and I am exhausted today. Don't knoew how I am going to double that in 4 weeks!
I just hope there is someone there slower than me!

You cant be less prepared than me db! I reckon I will walk most of it to be honest. I have put on weight which has meant that I am really slow and am struggling with training and working and looking after three kids and looking for a new job and and and.....

glitterfairy - you've still got a fair few weeks - you just need to put in one good long run and your confidence will be there that you can do it.

I managed an hour and ten very slowly this morning (despite two large glasses of wine last night). Can't say that I enjoyed it much until about the last 10 minutes when I knew I was nearly home. But good to get it out of the way.

Congrats on getting your dd home.

I am supposed to be going out for 1-1 1/2 hrs tomorrow morning but this is dependent on me not drinking too much tonight. It's 8pm and I've already had a glass of wine! It's not looking that promising.

We 'sprung' dd - pretty much discharged ourselves and made a break for it.

She's had some metalwork removed from her leg Pidge - more sore than serious.

Pidge - nice to haver the decision taken out of your hands
Veggie - have a great time

I havent run since my 10k. Have had some weirdy virus or hormonal thing again and am soooo tired as both ds1 and ds2 are sleeping dreadfully even by their standards. Was going to run tonight but decided to wait until the weekend and do a steady 5k.

Off home to australia for 6 weeks ladies so will prob not be on for a while (might pop up occasionally to see what your all up to). Hopefully will get some running in whilst i have willing babysitters. i'm hoping to get myself back into a habit again.

All the best to those with races coming up in late sept and oct, and those with halfs in the very near future, have a go and enjoy the run.

well - half marathon dilemma is resolved - it has been canceled due to foot and mouth!!!

now of course I'm already muttering to myself about an alternative!

might be more sensible to go for a 10k though.

Pidge mine is in five weeks and I am not sure either as I have such a long way to go but if I have to walk I am going to do it as I have forced myself to set up a just giving page for my dad with cancer and am supporting his charity.

I knew it was the only way I wouldnt back out and it is keeping me going with the training.

Dounle bluff well done!

thanks for the welcome back folks.

have acquired a groovy MP3 player for my birthday, so am now longing to get out for a run with musical accompaniment! Hopefully tomorrow.

Popsy - I'm really not sure about the half marathon - I will only have run 6 times in about 3 months, and my longest run was 9 miles this weekend - I'd still have to manage another 4 on top of that, and the 1/2 is in 2 weeks time. Main thing is I don't want to get injured.

I went out today for a good hour - but was very hot.
I usually get up one morning a week and go before DS's and Dh get up, do one long run on Thurs / Fir when off and kids are in school and one long run on Sat/ Sun.

I really should be able to fit it in as I work 3 days a week and we have showers in office plus a gym and ds is at playgroup 4 mornings a week - reading that back makes me think I don't have to get up at crack of dawn to do it..... Must start seriously!
