Last week I bought home DD's folder of school work from last term. Except that she obviously hadn't done ANYTHING. First term at school was better, only 18 kids in the class, but since January there have been 30 and they obviously don't know what to do with DD. School head now wants to have a one-to-one with me (good, because I'd like to speak to her too) about how DD "just does what she wants at school". Doesn't join in, doesn't say hello, doesn't make eye contact (need I go on...) At home, she's blowing up over stupid things like being asked to take her shoes off when she gets in the door or put her toys away after her bath (tho' tonight she actually did that with no probs, but that's unusual). She has to control conversation...we saw of friend of hers the other day and I pointed across to him and said "Hey look, there's C!" (ok, I should know better) but her response is "not C, NOT C, NOT C" and if I don't immediately defuse this she will get really upset. Then today I went into a shop selling aquariums and she tore all the plastic apples of a tree in there and put them into the fish tanks while I was talking to the guy behind the counter (grrr). OK, so none of this is earth shattering, it's just that I'm beginning to wonder where to go from here! Maybe she's just having a bad week because she's realised that something's going on (we're moving house in 3 weeks, but haven't really told her yet as she can't understand time concepts). She's making good progress with the SALT but her general behaviour seems to be deteriorating at the moment. Anyway, rant over...feel better already. Sometimes you just have to get these things off your chest!!
Hi, My son was like this when he was first at school after just a couple of weeks it was suggested he moved to the local special school on a short term basis. He spent one school year there and then moved back to another school with a language unit and now is back at mainstream school with his brother. For a long time we were told he had symptoms of:Language delay, Adhd, Asd,Dysprxia and finally got the diagnosis of Asd when he was 8 just a few months ago.
Keep a diary of her behaviour and read up about Autism, the Nas website is: www.nas.org.uk
Talk to her teachers and ask to meet with the schools eductional pschyologist, the best help we got was from the community paedtrician ask your Gp.
Keep notes on all the meetings and make sure that you are being taken seriously, for a long time we put our trust in others when we were the ones who knew what our son was like to live with.
I am beginning to wonder where one condition ends and the other begins. I joined a support group today and all the Mum's of kids with AS and HFA asked me if I was sure M wasn't. Some of them had had one DX and then another a few years later on. It is so difficult isn't it but I totally do know how you feel. guess we'll have to watch this space together!
I have heard of dx being changed and in one case a mum of a Asd teen being told he just had tendancys instead, which coinceded with him going to uni and needing support. I have a suspicion that in some areas there is pressure from local auth not to give a proper dx in "milder" cases as it then gives the parents more rights.
Tclanger - what was the support group like , I often have problems getting to them as I do not drive but am going to an information meeting next week for a group called Pages (Parent advisory group for education and socialisation) which I think is a local group.
Brioche - I hope you and your daughter are well , I found everything so stressfull when my son was younger but things are getting better slowly.
Thanks for the support! DD has been much better since it was bank holiday weekend here and we've had lots of trips out as a family (recently during the week DH has been home too late to see her). Saw the SALT today and she was really pleased with DD. Have also been given contact for pos. behavioural therapy for DD so will have to see what gives. Think half the problem is me being knackered. DS only just started sleeping thru the night a couple of weeks ago and I haven't really caught up yet!
