I won't going into details but I'm considering going down this route. My ex and I are desperste for a sibling four our DS. We have been throught the moral implications and have decided we can manage a family seperateley. Sleeping together could be a problem. Any advice / ideas?

well thtas an eye opener! i dont know too much about the whole artificial insemination thing...in theory it would work, but are you sure you should be planning another chuld with someone who you cant stand enought to have sex with?

its not a situation you come accross to regularly....

Ok, so first things first, I'll be following this thread as myself and dh are on cycle #1 of trying for dc#2 with nothing but a syringe, a small pot and some porn! It's not how I dreamed of building my family but dh has practically no libido and this is going to be the only way we're going to manage it. I'll know if we've been successful in a couple of weeks...

however I do echo BBs concerns about having a child with someone you're not prepared to sleep with. Still won't lecture - I'm sure you don't need that! smile

It would be intravaginal insemination & it's how some gay women & straight (as in non gestational)surrogates conceive (also couples with various psycho-sexual issues). Basically the sperm provider masturbates into a clean container & as quickly as possible you squirt the semen (a 10 ml syringe would do) into your vagina - close to the cervix but not in it. You can use an instead cup afterwards to keep the semen in place (alternatively some couples have the man masturbate into the instead cup (with or without a blob of preseed in it)).

Main thing is the timing - how quickly you get the semen in - & doing at the correct point in you cycle. You are most fertile for the 2 days leading up to ovulation - maybe try temping, OPKs and monitoring your CM.

Try googling 'home insemination' (ou can buy insemination sets, but you don't really need them)

As someone who did become pg as a result of non-penetrative sex, I can tell you that fingers work, I would think that any means of transference would be as effective as any other.

Good luck smile

hi confused mamma - it can be done. I've conceived twice this way (am gay). Like minster said, you really need to know your cycle to know the best time to try. I used mumsnet and fertility friend as well as various conception books to get to grips with cycle.

10 ml syringe was fine, and used medical sample pots - you can order on medical supply websites fairly cheaply. You need to try to have as short time as poss between 'production' and insemination - I think less than an hour is best (though up to two hours delay okay).

Thats the practical side. Hope it works out for your family, however its created.

Yes it can work.
They key thing is speed - the sperm will only survive 30 minutes (at most) so you need to inseminate yourself pretty sharpish after he's done his bit.

I think it's a turkey baster you need (watched a TV programme).

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
For a wink, , type [wink]
For a shocked face, , type [shock]
For an angry face, , type [angry]
For an embarrassed face, , type [blush]
For a sad face, , type [sad] or :(
For an envious face, , type [envy]

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
