Milk is an important source of nutrients that you and your family shouldnt miss out on. If someone in your family has lactose intolerance and the rest of the family still want to enjoy the taste of real milk, try Lactofree - the UKs first virtually lactose-free dairy drink.
I'm planning to breast feed my DD2 as i bottle fed DD1. I have heard your nippes can get sore and I've heard you can buy an excellent nipple cream, but for the life of me cannot remember the name, anyone got any suggestions?
I second 'Lansinoh'. When my nipples were so sore I thought I could cry from the pain of it, I rubbed the smallest amount of that on and it sorted the problem out. I definately would have given up breast feeding very early on if it wasn't for that.
Lansinoh pure lanolin is genius stuff. You can also get it on prescription from doctors as it's £10 a tube, but I had to pester the hell out of mine and start making loud protests in waiting room about them failing to support me in breast feeding etc in order to get it. If you have any left over is also brilliant on burns and eczema!
Decide whether you want to use the layering clothes system/ breast feeding bras and tops. I also highly recommend a breast pump(electric). Even if you ex bf it helped me to boost my supply before the major growth spurts so I didn't end up feeding every hour (which happened with dd1).I expressed everything left after the morning feed so that my supply was really good in the evening. HTH. I wouldn't bother with special nursing chairs and pillows though. A cushion is just as good and I found that feeding in the night sitting in a chair I got cold with dd1, so I now have dd2 in the moses basket in my room and lift her into bed. Feed lying down (NCT class show you this if you ask) so you can doze while baby feeds. Its easier to fall back to sleep when they finish IME.
I have to agree with everyone on the lansinoh cream. Its brilliant! My sister is one of those people that when she fell pregnant she read evry single book out there and knows everything about pregnancy and babies. She told me to use that cream because unlike others you don't have to wash this one off when baby breast feeds. I used it and never had sore or cracked nipples! Hope it works for you X
another vote for lansinoh (also great for cracked heels), breast shells are fab - they allow the air to circulate, keep fabric of your clothes away so your nipples can heal, and apply gentle pressure to help with engorgement.
Thanks so mucch for all your answers, I will def be buying Lansinosh cream and the tip about your own breast milk is a great one, would neer have known that.
I'm just hoping this baby has read the manual before it comes out!
And one - or even better two - of those V shaped pillows. You can get them quite cheaply at Argos. One behind you and one to rest he baby on until you get the hang of it. Later they are perfect to prop up a sitting but still wobbly baby (how does it feel to think you'll have one of those soon!)
Oh, and something I wish I'd had - a pretty but warm bed jacket for night feed. Frivolous - but I would have loved to have one.
