Yes you can get glass ones. I bought some 3 years ago for ds, having read a report about plastic. I can't believe that it has taken this long to get into the media when they have known about it for so long.
msjollyhat BPA free bottles are labelled with a 5 inside the recycle symbol. it means that it is made from Polypropylene. A lot of times the bottles do not have any symbols telling what they are made of.
Polypropylene looks semi-opaque instead of clear if the plastic has not been coloured (like the MAM Ultivents). If you are familiar with the Avent baby food cups with the blue lids - which i think they no longer make - that is what polypropylene is.
You may find unbranded (or maybe downmarket brand) polpropylene bottles narrow neck bottles in places like Wilkinson's or the independent chemist's and may be a fraction of what MAMs and Born Free cost. I remember this type of plastic bottles from when my little brother was being bottle fed in the mid seventies. I think they are still widely available in third world countries.
The Born Free bottles are usually widely available on ebay at a fraction of their normal retail cost. I got them for very colocky dd a year ago, and think they were £20 for 8, which is pretty good since they're a tenner for two in the shops. Just if you're looking for some cheaply.
I only just heard about this. Argh. We've been using bpa contining bottles and dishwashing them ince I had to stop bf. What's the size of the risk? I had a look on the web but all sources seem rather biased.
Green baby sell glass bottles and natural latex teats here. I was worried about glass but can vouch for these bottles - they are really tough and thick glass, and look and feel MUCH nicer than plastic, quite aside from the health issues! and from the feel of them they'll last forever, as they'd be impossible to scratch etc. And you can recycle them once you're finished with them.
